Why South Sudan and not Somaliland?

somaliland south sudan

South Sudan gained independence last year, while Somaliland has for decades struggled for independent statehood without success. NAI researcher Redie Bereketeab examines the underlying reasons for this situation.
− In Sudan, the conflict was defined in cultural, religious and ethnic terms. Therefore, partition was seen as logical by Western policymakers. Somalia is one of only a few African countries that is also a homogenous nation, with just one language and one culture. That’s why the international community is unwilling to recognise Somaliland as a sovereign state, says Redie Bereketeab.
Since the collapse of Somalia in 1991 there has not been a government with which Somaliland can negotiate. Today, there is government in Mogadishu, but it is not interested in even discussing independence for Somaliland.
− Apart from the unwillingness of the international community, the neighbouring states of Ethiopia and Kenya are reluctant to countenance independence for Somaliland. IGAD, the regional organisation that played a significant role in the achievement of independence by South Sudan, has been unable to play a similar role in Somaliland, owing to the concerns of neighbouring countries about their own ethnic Somali populations. They may fear that demands for independence will arise in their countries if Somaliland is recognised, says Redie Bereketeab.

Spot on NAI couldn't of said anything better + the reason Ethiopia/Kenya don't want to recognize is because of their own homegrown secessionist movements.

  2. Hornid says:

Legally South Sudan should not have been independent as this country break rule of respect of colonial border and reason of cultural or religion to justify it is rubbish there are so many tension with same problem in Africa like Nigeria and now north Malia want independence like south sudan. However Somaliland case is différent becoz this country was independent, recognized by 35 country and just reclaim his lost sovergnity by withdrawing fake , bloody and unfinished Union. South sudan get oil and are christian back by western country as Usa, this is real reason.

  3. Crimean says:

Hawiye warrior my foot. He is more like Faqash xaasid. Every little progress even perceived pains him. Just like the criminal entity he belong to

  4. Reer-Dunbuluq says:

    Utter nonsense!

If we go along with the author's idiotic argument, then Ethiopia and Kenya should be lobbying against (not for) the Independence of South Sudan.

Regarding his naive comment about the international community's stance on Somaliland, Palestine, Northern Cyprus, just to name a few, should have already been recognized.

  5. Buuxiye says:

1960Union that brought together Somaliland and Somalia was also intended on acquiring Kenya's Northern Province, Ethiopia's kilil and Djbouti to form a Pan-Somali state. This endeavor neglected the minorities among the somalis like the Bantus,Jareers, Barawanis, Cadcads and banjuni.

Since Somaliland withdrew from the union in 1991 there has been no Government with sufficient authority to discuss the Political relationship of the two states and this is the reason why it has taken this long. Where as in Sudan there was functioning State that could be held accountable and where agreements where reached to hold a referendum.

The 18 Different Reconciliation conferences held of Somalia all produced corrupt individuals who merely worked for their own benefit to steal the Aid donation intended for orphans and these criminals COULD get away claiming Somaliland as a Region under their jurisdiction.

Hassan Mahamoud and Siicid Shirdoons Government is DIFFERENT in that :

    - The AID donations and all allocated funds will be managed by a Joint Financial Management Board[JFMB] under the UN.

    - This coupled with 20,000 Amisom troops providing security in Somalia.

    - This coupled with Somaliland's ZERO representation in Somalia's NEW government.

The internationally funded Dialogue is transparent and one that gives EQUAL platform to a 2-STATE representation. Where Somalia insists on UNION & Somaliland will insist on Full De jure Recognition. In the eyes of the international community Somaliland will have the upper hand.

It is more honorable if Somalia accepts Somaliland's 1991 withdrawal from the Union!!!

Somaliland is preparing it's case and as we speak MASS graves are been investigated. Government of Somalia cannot afford to be put infront of the international courts because they will loose like ALI SAMATAR and cry bankruptcy.

    :)

he's already commented using two different names .this is beyond pathetic and you will see him using four other names before the night is over this is an exercise in futility other than that this a an excellent article.

  7. Mujahid says:

isn't it obvious? the reason why somaliland will never be recognised is because the majority of people from the north region want unity. there are only 5 states, 3 of them are pro-union.

    Sool, Sanag/ Awdal pro-union
    W/galbed/togdheer pro-secessionist

Garhajis tribe are also the majority in W/galbed and togdheer and they are not extreme secessionist.

    • Buuxiye says:

Without Respect of Shanta-Somaliyeed borders. There will never be any form of UNITY and that is fact.

A Future UNION can only begin to be discussed when Somaliland can stand with Djbouti and Somalia as an EQUAL partner nothing else will suffice. Prevention of Somaliland's De Jure Recognition and derailing of it's desire to full sovereignty is FUTILE. There will never be another UNION without TRUST, with RESPECT, without EQUALITY, without NIYAD and i promise you BOTH your president and Prime minsters are intelligent enough to have understood why it is important to change the policy towards Somaliland!

Alienating, Distancing, Sidelining, propagating negativity, false claims of their gobol status have all failed for 22 years and they will continue to fail for another 22 years. It is a well know fact that every attempt to derail the somaliland political project has failed for 22 years. Somalia finally has 2 top leaders that are in agreement on following a NEW path. one of:

      - Mutual RESPECT between 2-States.
      - EQUALITY as two distinct in sovereignty.
      - HONORING the choice of the majority of each state in line with democratic values.
      - HARBORING Positive working relationships.
      - NURTURING midnimo via positive advocacy.
      - PROMOTE midnimo via raising the awareness that increases Rabitanka umada somaliyeed.
      - ENCOURAGE midnimo as a choice not an ultimatum.

Hassan Mahamoud and Siciid Shirdoon may not be from the diaspora or hold PHDs but they are intelligent enough to understand that MIDNIMO must be the desire of the people and the only way yo make it happen is through peaceful negotiations and acceptance of the wishes of the Majority in Somaliland!

What this means if i give layman digest for the diaspora school dropouts is that BOTH President and Prime minster of Somalia agree Somaliland's independence cannot be stopped.

After independence we can have a 3-way discussion on Mutual interests between Somaliland, Djbouti and Somalia. There is simply no other way to meaningful midnimo.

That is the reason Waransgeli and Dhulbahante are rushing to Hargeysa to demand their right full share of their government.

:) Somaliland recognition = Midnimo like the Arab emirates

      • Buuxiye says:

Without a viable defense strategy Somalia can accept DEFEAT or play arrogant and resist DISSOLUTION.

        - Somalia security is managed by AU = Amisom
        - Somalia economy is managed by UN – JFMB
        - Somali government is predominantly Ex-NGO – President and all he selects are ex-NGOs.

They cannot permit this TALKS to fail nor will they have the opportunity to Derail them. Their preemptive stance is a sign of acceptance of DEFEAT.

If you have any hope left i suggest you use it to better your life in exile :)

        • hamsa says:

Well said Buuxiye. I like the way you frame and backup your arguments. Thank you.

      • HAWIYE WARRIOR says:

@Buuxiye "A Future UNION can only begin to be discussed when" is see you have finally warmed up to the unity even its a little concession which is actually a very big step coming from you by using Somaliweyn as a tool . For that i say my brother welcome to finally seeing the light at the end of the DARK tunnel welcome my brother.

Please recognise me now, please now, please soon, please do!

  9. Kayse says:

You can't compare South Sudan's case to few subclan's protest camp. One day you will come to your common sense and understand why. Sout Sudan consists of hundreds of different ethnic and religious groups while the Somali people are one homogenous race unseen and unheard of in Africa.

Ethiopia will have hundreds of secessionist regions and before it finds solution for Somalia, it should accept the will of the Somali people in Hawd, Ogaden and Esse territory.

Likewise Kenya should respect the aspiration of the NFD Somalis and their demands.

SL is just a state in the Somali republic that will never runaway from the reality. This minor project will soon come to an end and the Somali people will unify from Ras Kabon to Djibouti, from Diredawa to Alula…nothing will stop that, it is just matter of time and events. Time brings different fortunes.

  10. Kayse says:

The wind will soon or later blow in the favour of Somalis and you have been warned not to go against the will of the Somali race/people. The few Ethiopians embedded in parts of the north including pirateland region will soon or later be expelled by force and domination…that I will guarantee you.

There are things that are natural rights and the Somali territory from its vast lands is the natural right of the Somali people.

All its enemies will be defeated. Nothing lasts forever and the Somalis will have their moment on top…these tough times will only make the Somali race even stronger.

Be warned Habashi spies and those who wish to divide five brothers, the sons of Somal.

    • Buuxiye says:

It was Somalis who created 1000s of MASS graves in Somaliland.

The enemy of the Somali people is WAR and the people who have created WAR over the 200years in each of the 5-Somali regions are well known.

Sunta ayaxa lagu buufindoona the Dracula people.

    • amal says:

"There are things that are natural rights and the Somali territory from its vast lands is the natural right of the Somali people" Does that include all the 5 Somali territories. Yeah definitely we Somalis can have our moment if we can respect and tolerate each-other.

  11. Jay says:

British Somaliland ceased to exist and it was an illegal entity to begin with. Name one country that recognized that entity? Believe I contacted the Israelis, the US Department of State and they said they have never taken such actions in the past. Are you going to tell Noah recognized you in 1960 when the white man that was in my country as an illegal invader left? Interesting

    • Buuxiye says:

      WELL duh!

If Somaliland's did not achieved INDEPENDENCE on the 26th Jun 1960 then it is still a Protectorate of Britain. In order to END the terms of the protectorate Britain was required to award FULL independence with Israel being the first country that Recognised this reality.

Enemy of Somaliland sovereignty is the enemy of Somaliweyn! and all Somalis.

      • HAWIYE WARRIOR says:

What you Somalilanders always forget to mention on purposely is why it got that independence let me tell why it wasn't for it to create a new state but the sole purpose was for it instead to join Italian-Somaliland nothing more nothing less : )

        • Reer-Dunbuluq says:

We don't, because stupid questions don't deserve answers.

      • hamsa says:

Well said Buuxiye. I like the way you frame and backup your arguments. Thank you.

      • amal says:

        Buuxiye,
Yeah I agree with you. I believe in Somaliweyn but as 5 equal and separate entities that can form future union like the European union (that would be soo cool!) Now the three states Djibouti, Somaliland and Somalia should be treated as equals.

  12. amal says:

Funny I had the same question in my mind but was reluctant to ask. You should know since you are from Mogadishu or at least born there.

  13. amal says:

    dhuxulow,

You should really really be ashamed of yourself, a Somali man saying that about fellow Somali women. No wonder why your kind is cursed and will always be cursed. You have the audacity to speak like that when your country and people is under the mercy of Bantu Amison.
