The current Somaliland flag was adopted in 1997 during a period when debating about a flag was the least of their concern. The Somaliland public has not madly fallen inlove with the flag but were happy to replace the blue flag.
The new flag, three equal horizontal stripes of green-white-red with the Islamic creed made little sense to the Somaliland people. Largely because the designers of the flag never really explained the symbols and how that relates to the people. Somalilanders seen various versions of the flag and numerous interpretations of it. They really never understood the true meaning of the flag and it never unified the country. It also failed to create political passion among the masses.
Symbols are important and the flag sometimes appears with a confusing black star. Many times the horizontal red stripe is replaced with orange and at times the Islamic creed does not appear against the green stripe. This created a confusion among the citizens and the international community.
If Somalilanders are asked to define the meaning of their flag, only very few would tell you something, something that is not even consistent. For example no one really has a clue what the “black” star really means. Some would say “the black star is for the demise of the united Somalia’s dream.” In my opinion, that’s a very childish thing to say. Others will argue the black star reflects the “black people” – which is even more laughable, as if anyone doesn’t know Somalis in Somaliland are black Africans.
Sometimes people confuse the Somaliland flag with the Irish flag (No Islamic creed, orange replaces red), while other times it can easily be mistaken for the flag of Iran or rotated version of Mexico. The Ethiopian regional administration of Gambella has the exact flag but with one extra black stripe. This is not good news for a country who failed to distinct itself from its southern Somali neighbour (Somalia).
The current flag was introduced to the country at a time of war when most of the citizens were either displaced in Ethiopia, abroad or deeply divided. Two decades on since declaring the restoration of its independence from Somalia, the country discussed issues such as political parties, elections and security but never really provided the venue for debates on national icons, citizenship, identity or the issue of currency (changing “Shilling”). Symbols were imposed on the public when many were absent to have their say in a society where opinions are very strong. This is no different to an unchallenged totalitarian rule. It is one of the reasons Somalis in Somaliland left the union with Mogadishu because to them everything was one opinion, one voice, one winner, one ruler, one flag, one way, one nation.
Somalilanders have to embrace debates, dialogue and changes in contributing to the development of the country. Like Denis Waitley once said: “You must welcome change as the rule but not as your ruler.” One reason Somalia is unable to fix its affairs is largely due to its inability to change and accept it can never be again what it was. Somaliland must not make the same mistake. Somaliland has to be flexible, adaptable and changeable. The Japanese say: “The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that resists.” Let us not resist ideas or healthy debates.
I would like to start this debate by presenting a number of flags that I designed on this influential website. I hope my article and flags advance the case for a change. Change does not necessarily mean getting rid off the flag entirely. Let us take baby steps and start the debate.
I will not ask you whether you like or dislike our current flag, the question is rather simple; Is it the right symbol for Somaliland for the next 100 years?
I have not changed the colour scheme as they are not so bad but I have rearranged them. In my design, GREEN means growth, nature and as Islam teaches us regeneration or fertility. The WHITE color is a reflection of our sincerity, openness, hospitality, peace and humility. Let me remind you during pilgrimage Muslims wear only white piece of clothe and during truce white flag is used. RED is blood and power. The KUDU (antelope) is a native animal reflecting our motherland, it also represents power (long horns, high jumps, kicks) and vigilance (always alert, sensitive ears and nose). Alternatively, the STAR reflects the five Somali families (Somaliland, NFD, Western Somalia, Djibouti and Somalia) like the Somali flag. We don’t have to completely erase the past and remember the old blue flag was commissioned for Somaliland in 1954. We are Somalis by ethnic and Somaliland can be home for other Somalis.
For both the police and navy, I have replaced the RED with BLUE to reflect law of the land and the ocean. I have moved the KUDU to the center almost inside a blue circle to reflect our defense is always at the heart of our nation.
Below are the different versions of the flag (click on image to enlarge and see description, click back to close it):

Naaah! I rather keep the Somaliland flag as is, it is beautiful and is now engraved on my heart, if you really understand what that means.
In my view, I think that the current Flag of Somaliland is so unique and shouldn't be touched
or confused with new changes. The Tawxiid(Believing in God and his messenger we trust)
really don't need unnecessary ambiguities, such as Animal symbols etc. The 5 stars symbol
to represent Greater Somalia and the Black African Continent, the green, white and red all
significantly have their respective unique interpretations, portray preciously sound Flag for the
Somaliland Republic and should remain as it is.
Cheers.
In my opinion, i think the Somalilanders has to be given a fair chance to have their say in the type of flag they want to adopt.
Gambella flag & s/land look’s The some, wonder it was not That appealing.
Somaliland flag is bright and beautiful and represents are deen and dhaqan. It is the best and the people somaliland hamdullah marxuum cigaal brought it out.Somaliland people love it maybe its the diaspora somalilanders are getting ahead of their self.Change should only be done after recognition doing so only before that you will confuse somaliland and world with a new flag.
I agree with you fully.
Gambella region had that flag several years after the SL flag was created. It just shows how ignorant Africans are of each other, hence always repeating the same mistakes. But the fact that some ppl liked it means at least its appealing.
However, we are in modern times so it is normal for ppl to be looking to do things different. In the future ppl will totally get rid-off these flags for something else. The funny thing is that flags with verses were started by little kids who wanted to show off their knowledge of foreign languages.
The best were young British officers sent to govern colonial posts who always needed to show the expertise in Latin and art, hence animals and Latin verses on the flags they created for their colonies. The example this contributor has is all along these past ideals and so most people will reject saying that they have seen them all before.
The black star on somaliland flags represent somaliland independant from thr union same as djibouti has red star n is on its own
Somaliland flag is the best it represents are deen and dhaqan what more can u ask for dont confuse the world if somalilanders in diaspora having doubts well they shouldnt cause somalilanders in homeland arent
Any change should be made after recognition not prior to it.
The black star may or may not be intended to denote for the demise of the united Somalia’s dream. But one thing is for sure; the whole flag is part and parcel of an intense campaign to destroy Somali unity and nationhood.
@Allemagan.
unity will stay here no question about it,The purpose showing all These weird flags accept one which is not perfect, probably They want to change Their regional flag.
Surprise Thing is every time when There’s concert or party, some people bring This flag into The venue which is wrong becuase it’s writen on (in The name of Allah and his messenger).
Nay the unity you seek started with Somaliland being the first Somali Nation who were given
and became Independent in 1960 by Colonial Britain, but that unity Union failed in 1991 and Somaliland
went back.to its de jure Sovereignty without conditional obligations on behalf of Somalia or the IC.
How long does it take to make you understand this simple truth? Let me tell you farther, if there would
ever be a greater Somaliweyn, that too would only come about from Somaliland..no where else.
Now chill out and hide your skin.
Cheers.
They should be part of somalia and should leave khaatumo out of this. they're innocent. at least persuade them or something. (which won't happen)
P.S
1-sool, saag and cayn aren't part of somaliland according to Khaatumo state of somalia and Puntland State of somalia.
2-The somaliland flag looks good but i think the black star stands for all 5 land that was seperated. Djibouti also have it. Ogaden and the kenyan part also have it. Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland also Have it.
@Allemagan,
Which Somali unity are we referring to? Unity between Somaliland, Djibouti, NFD, Ogaden and Somalia or something else? To the best of my knowledge, nothing of the sort has ever existed; you can't destroy something that don't exist, so I don't quite follow your logic.
Typo: 'something that don't " should read " something that doesn't "
No, I would rather keep our current Green signifies nature and wealth with Altawxiid, in God and His Messenger we trust, White signifies respect and chasteness with the Black Star signifies the demise of the dream of the 'Great Somali', Red signifies the blood shed of our people Flag, lest we forget. So, let cherish the Green, White, and Red as it is and keep it close to our heart forever. And sing the song of "Calan aan dhigayn"!
In my opinion, there are circumstances surrounding Somaliland now. If we get recognition we can open new pages of life and change of current flag will be in question. For the time being I suggest the flag should be kept as it is now, no change. Thank you all.
Like zaire ou gongo ????? Djibouti is nation ;;;
I support the existence of the current Flag which is very beautiful, I would the government to give little touch and make standard. We need to bring quantity that sustains and reaches every corner of the country. The flag or part of it, must have special surrounds that will make look more official. I warn those none Somalilanders to criticize the flag carrying the TAWXIID, otherwise this will increase your mayhem and you have been over 21 years.
The current Somalilander flag looks OK to me but if the government of Somaliland is contemplating on changing it, they aught to share the other options they may have in store so the majority of Somalilanders would have to vote on as to their new choice of flag. The posted versions are all looked the same with very minor differences.

No funny looking animal on our flag please. The current flag is beautiful but there is nothing wrong with slightly altering it. In the collection, I like the first one (the one with the white star on the red triangle) I don't think it's important to worry about it at the moment though, main thing is to focus in securing our place and sovereignty then maybe alter it and adopt a new name.
I prefer the old 90s flag. The one with the green circle in the middle and black Arabic writing around it. It reminds me of the good old days, when the late great President M.H. Egal was in power. Egal was soo progressive in developing S/Land!!!
To be really authentic, the middle strip of the flag should be yellow. No beating around the bush.
F*a*q*sh remnant, we are not Ethiopians if that is what you insinuating in your remarks. We are proud Somalilanders with their own Flag and a force to reckon with!
Gobaad Gambella we lost you people in gambella region waiting you.
I'd rather deal with Ethiopians any given day over socially inept Somalis, specially the ones from Puntland.
Osman Qaal
The meaning of the current flag as I know it is White = Peace, Green = Prosperity, Red = the blood that was shed for it and the Star = the five Somalis.
I have never come across anyone who didn't understand it as such. I could be wrong. I have no opinion on the subject of changing it though!
The current Somaliland flag is soo pleasing to the eye mashAllah
Somaliland flag is very weak and lacks creativity just like the government and it is one of the reasons it has failed to secure recognition. If a vote was held it would has less support than the blue because its not unique at all. It will not last.

The current flag is SNM flag and Im not sure if the rebel group represented all Somalilanders, changing it might make some Somalilanders feel that they are part of the process and not imposed on them. The flag does not even have wide support in Burco…its supporters are mainly few suburbs in Hargeisa. Imalways honest and dontgo with the "Somaliland flow".
The author said:"They really never understood the true meaning of the flag". He critisised some people's interpertations of the meaning of the flag. But he failed to give us the true meaning of our flag instead he jumped to new designs of his own which again he did'nt offer their meanings.
@Tesfa
Whoa! I guess we have here more folks from Gambella than I could've ever imagined.
I don't even know what Gambella means let alone being from it. Come up with something I can understand!
Thanks but no change. No other design touches the hearts of our citizens, or synchronizes with the beauty of Somaliland women. Green stands for prosperity, white for justice, red for the struggle, the star stands as one of the five Somali states, and the TAWHID is untouchable.. a great flag in every sense.
Somaliland Flag is the most beautiful flag in Africa, and in the world. I am not saying this because I am a Somalilander and love this country more than words can describe, no, I am saying this because it it the fact.
The interpretation of any flag of any state or organisation is determined by those it represents. I wouldn't accept the politicians or any other person to put words for me to describe my country flag. The Flag is something that the citizen is supposed to identify his/herself with without being influenced of what that identity is. My interpretation of my country flag is: it has three colours that I believe Somaliland possesses in abundance. Green, White, and Red; Green represents the wealth this land offers; mountains, greeneries, water, forestations, plantations, livestock, wealthy wildlife, rainforest area, desert areas, and semi desert areas, long costal, unexploited natural resources, and so much more. The White represents the peace, stability, freedoms, and other privileges that the people of this land enjoy and have always enjoyed. The White also represents the liberal people of Somaliland. The Red represents that this land possesses true patriotic citizens, who with their last drop of blood, will defend and protect their country. It is the last (lower top-down)colour, hence, the base of this beautiful land, so, those liberal and peace-loving people will sacrifice their lives to preserve Somaliland and all that within. Other noteworthy insertions of the flag are the Towheed, and the Black Star: the Towheed, which is displayed on top and in the Green indicates that this state is Muslim. While the Black Star represents the Dark History of post decolonization, when we, voluntarily joined in a union with the former Italian Somalia, and spent nearly 30 years under oppressive regime.
Ms Justice
You expressed here your own true feelings and what does this flag represents for you. But how does the meanings you expressed here agree with the ten different meanings expressed by some of the comments above? Since we don't have any true official meaning of the colours of this flag, we'll assume that we can not settle the question posed by the article.
Ms Justice,
well said, sis! You hammered the nail squarely on the head..your beautiful name says it all…
Osman Qaal
Could not have describe it any better. Well said!
Some Landers think telling the truth is a sign of weakness because as they the truth is heavy, therefore few care to carry. Lets face it our flag is both meaningless and weak and we have opportunities to fix it. Personally the first flag and the second last with crescent are far better.
The flag has not a true meaning: they is based in the party flag (SNM) adding a star (state) and shahadda (islam). The official meanings can be changed when is necessary
Why a WHITE man paying solute to the SL flag on this Cortoon?
The Black Star of our flag is very offensive to all somalis whether in SL or other parts of the world. Countries like Ethiopia which uses our ports such as Berbera do not want strong united Somali people. I bet you Ethiopia had something to do with the design of SL flag to put the final nail on the coffin of Greater Somalia, a vision that united us and made us progress since independence. However, an evil regime, Siyad Bare, has damaged the meaning of Greater Somalia. It was not only SNM that Siyad was fighting. He also fought with SSDF in Puntland. He hated Majeerteen clan more than any other clan as they blamed him for the killing of Abdirashiid Ali Sharmarke, the somali president before Siyad. Therefore, its no longer acceptable for SL to side with Ethiopia who colonises our ports while ignoring and mocking their brothers and sisters. Its very imparressing how southern refugees in SL are treated and mocked while Puntland builds them homes and gives them free education and health. The founding of SL was the joy of all somalis as they had save place to go. But politics in SL has been heavily influenced recently by ethiopia and other anti somali countries. Its shame that SL can cause such pain and distraction to weak Somalia who needs helping hand not mocking them and blackening the star of unity.
Don´t waste your time because (that waving flag is mine..) You can ONLY discuss about this flag When you dig the graves and bring the dead SNM and rest who lost thier lives for the sake of this FLAG.
Remember people turned the white star into BLACK. Don´t get me wrong! It is you who make it dark NOT Somalilanders.
Do you have someother things to talk about?
The article claims Somalis and in general somalilanders are black!!! We really need to get things straight WE ARE NOT BLACK!!
The article claims somalis and in general somalilanders are black!!!we need to get this straight we are not black!!! PS the somaliland flag contains all the pan Arab colors next time start there
The article claims Somalis and in general somalilanders are black!!! We really need to get things straight WE ARE NOT BLACK!! The flag represents the pan Arab colors.
That is True they are the Pan Arab colours and the Shahadah in Green which is cut of from the Saudi flag represents our orgin the arabian peninsula as most of somaliland is Hashmite descendents of the Prophet Muhammad
