Job description of Full-time Instructor
Burao institute of health science(BIOHS) and University of Burao (UB)
Togdheer region is the second biggest populated region in Somaliland; it has also the second biggest referral hospital. Taking advantage of its’ midland location, has borders with four Somaliland regions and the Ethiopian-Somali region; as well as being the biggest livestock market in the zone. These strategic assets have made Burao regional hospital an opportune referral and training facility to all the regions discussed above.
The prevailing economic crises in Somaliland, shortage of qualified nurses/midwives, low income, delayed payment of salaries, has created favorable conditions for cross-infection, chronicity of inpatients and increasing costs to patients, relatives and the hospital. The resultant conditions has undermined scientific health care, encouraged a comeback of traditional medicine and techniques; and remain an overall threat to the whole population in the era of HIV/AIDs pandemic prevalence.
To avert the declining hospital care qualities and professional practice standards the regional health authority has commissioned the establishment of a professional training school( Burao institute of health and sciences on June 2005) which has already taken its’ fifth patch of nursing students to undergo three years state registered nursing course
Burao institute of health sciences in partnering with University of Burao have established An affiliated faculty of health sciences in which they have chosen to inaugurate and coincide the opening of the faculty and 2-yrs TOP-UP degree public health course .
To this end, faculty of health science is looking for a competent qualified public health officer preferably with master of science degree to lead the course, willing to work fulltime.
Scope of work:- Prepare Basic BSC Nurse degree, TOP-UP BSC nursing degree and a state registered nurse that has all the capacities to fulfil The professional functions discussed in the curriculum of their own program.
1. Self-preparedness.
Regularly updates his/her professional knowledge and skills.
Regularly reviews and analysis curriculum organization, content and application with other instructors, principle tutor and the director.
Maintains/promotes self-fitness and refraining from indulgence into unhygienic habits
Presents him/herself and practices as a professional model.
Checks and documents student attendance and preparedness.
2. Preparation of Instructional Units/modules.
Prepares instructional unit plan organized in the form of a system, subject or chapters depending the organization of the curriculum; Utilizing student based active learning experience and submits copies to the principle tutor and director for review/approval before implementation.
Prepares competency test questions testing all three domains of learning (about 100, depending on the size of the material) and submits together with the unit plan for review and approval.
Prepares comprehensive handouts directed towards the achievement of the general learning objectives and representing minimum information submits copies to the principle tutor.
Prepares clinical teaching unit plans under his/her assign and submits copies to the principle tutor , the director and unit in charges in advance.
3. Preparation of learning environment.
Ensures that the learning environment is clean and conducive to learning.
Prepares and deploys all essential materials/equipment for the task before hand for immediate utilization.
Prepares students to undertake the learning experiences.(provide unit plan, reading material, time-frame and other requirements.
Ensures that the room/area is left clean for other instructors.
4. Implementation.
Utilizes active learning student based teaching/learning methods/strategies in implementing instructional units.e.g group-work, case-studies, guided library reading, demonstration, simulated drams , research, lecture-discussion etc.
Utilizes inbuilt feedback mechanism to assess mastery of concepts, skills and attitudes and to re-enforce learning.
Respect assignment time- frames in implementing tasks.
Ensures safety/protection to her/himself, the student, other teachers, clients, other co-workers, through the application of professional standards and code of ethics.
5. Supervision.
Provides positive criticism to student performance and records negative or positive anecdotes to support him during student evaluation.
Regularly available to support student learning and assist problem solving in time.
Identifies learning tasks, simulated situations and provides access for interaction to all students under her/his supervision.
6.Management of student files.
Collects and records properly information required for students under his/her responsibility.
Takes responsibility for the guidance and management of their files, which could be at different levels.
Communicates in-time the principle tutor, the director and parents as necessary to re-enforce student learning and resolve problems before they become barrier to learning.
7. As a counselor.
Understands student and parent background to facilitate problem solving that are hindrance to learning.
Establishes good relationship with the students and their parents.
Assists/supports students and parents to develop their own problem solving plans.
Supports other teaching staff identifies, understand and resolve their problems.
Takes responsibility to improve his counselling skills.
8. Evaluation.
Prepares pre and posttest cumulative exams and provides feedback to students.
Completes/fills informatively subjective practical experience student performance appraisal form in every two week assignment in health centres or wards before students start new assignment ; and discuss with students their strengths , weaknesses and strategies to improve.
Supports external examiners and institutional assessment missions.
9.Health service responsibilities.
Identifies and reports disease outbreaks and conditions predisposing to health emergencies in areas where he/she is assigned during student supervision.
Participates health emergency responses under the directives of the director/deputy.
Supports/conducts operational research during his/her supervision of students.
Supports data processing and reporting in HCs and hospital sections as part of student practice.
Supports learning of staff nurses and subordinates during student supervision through modelling and participation.
Prepares her/himself to contribute to health policy, planning and surveys on the directives of the executive and shares experience with other staff.
Prepares and maintains model wards/health centers in collaboration with Institute management, hospital management and others as a service and student practice improvement strategy.
10.Accepts all assignments given by director/deputy in the professional environments .
Requirments
1. BSC /plus in public health academic education based on WHO PH-core curriculum content outline and international health strategies.( Masters’ degree in PH is an advantage.)
2. Working experience after PH-training 2-3 years.
3. Teaching experience is an advantage.
4. Experience long working hours.
