INTERNSHIP POSITIONS:

Internship Placement Opportunity: House of Parliament and the National Human Rights Commission.

SORADI is an independent social research and development institute, which is aiming at fostering culture of democracy and sustainable development in Somaliland and in the Horn of Africa Region. SORADI is recognized as a center of quality research, a hub of scholarly innovation and entrepreneurship, and an agent of transfer of knowledge and harbinger of the democratic culture in the region. Since 2007 SORADI has worked with key democratic government institutions, such as the parliament, the Human Rights commission, Civil Society organizations, as well as the National electoral commission to support the electoral process in the country.

SORADI would like to invite talented, qualified and motivated Somaliland students (including graduates and undergraduates who are currently in their final year) for one year internship placement in the Somaliland Parliament and the Somaliland Human Rights Commission. The objective of this internship is to build the capacity of the parliament sub-committees and to let the students to experience a firsthand account of the parliament and Human rights work.

Selected Interns are going to work with the different Parliament sub-committees to act as a research aid and to help the Human Rights Commission cope with the increasing work load. SORADI is looking for candidates who have the following skills/Background:

Strong academic record with displayed interest in the Democratization, Institution Building, Politics and applied research.

Program development/management experience

Familiarity with research methodologies, writing, and analytical skills

English proficiency; IMPORTANT

Basic technological proficiency (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Internet)

Ability to work independently or as part of a team

Positive attitude, curiosity, flexibility, resourcefulness, and enthusiasm for the work of SORADI and the attached institution.

Number of Interns per year: 7 Internees (4 Parliament Interns and 3 Human Rights commission interns)

Eligibility:

Completed Undergraduate Degree, preferable Social Science faculties, such as Economics, political science, Statistics, Management, and any other social science

 

 

discipline. OR is in the final year of his/her undergraduate degree, but with STRONG academic record.

Candidates must currently reside in Hargeisa or be willing to relocate to Hargeisa, for one year. Diaspora students who are willing to spend a year in Somaliland, working in the parliament and the Human rights commission are strongly encouraged.

Candidates must be of Somaliland Nationality

 

Remunerations / Time Commitments:

Selected interns will receive a small stipend for transportation every month.

Interns are expected to be in the Parliament or the Human rights commission office according to the need of the attached institution and committee.

Must attend mandatory Monthly briefing meetings.

Internees are expected to report to SORADI about the work, and the experience they gain in the attached institution every month.

 

Application Procedure:

 Applicants must submit a cover letter and résumé to interns@soradi.org by Wednesday, September 26, 2012. SORADI will short list 20 students which will receive a 2 weeks training on: democracy in the transitional state; parliamentary work; constitutional process, conflict resolution; human rights. The course will include 1 week study of a current issue in Somaliland democratization process and a final presentation. 7 members of the successful trainees will be recruited as internees to work with selected public institutions such as the Parliament, and the Human Rights Commission.

 The internship placement will officially commence on October 20, 2012 and officially end on October 19, 2013.
