HARGEISA — U.S. Special Representative for Somalia Ambassador James C. Swan, arrived in the Somaliland capital on Monday for talks on democracy, terrorism, maritime piracy, regional stability and development.

Ambassador Swan held a closed-door meeting shortly after his arrival with Somaliland Minister of Interior Mohamed Nur Arale and no reporters were allowed to attend. The details of their discussion have not been released but some unconfirmed reports claimed the U.S. will help Somaliland combat some elements who are trying to destabilize the region. They added terrorism and maritime piracy were high on the agenda as well as the formation of Anti-Terrorism forces in the country which the U.S. will fund.

Mr. Swan is scheduled to hold further direct talks with senior government officials including President Ahmed Silanyo and members of his cabinet as well as opposition parties and lawmakers on Tuesday.

During his two-day visit Ambassador Swan will discuss the political and security situation in Somaliland and other regional issues. During his press address in Hargeisa, he emphasized the strong and sustained cooperation between the two countries specially in the last two years since the “Dual Track” policy was announced by Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Johnnie Carson.

The US official lauded Somaliland for its progress, stability and democracy that it has achieved over the years. He revealed that his government was fully committed in furthering the ties between the two nations.

Mr. Swan also revealed that his would attend the upcoming conference on Somalia in London after receiving an invitation from their British ally. Scheduled for next month, the meeting will address the issues of development, humanitarian aid, socio-economic and political development, terrorism and maritime piracy according to UK Deputy Ambassador to Ethiopia Chris Allan.

The American diplomat said the U.S. government was opptimistic about the UK conference on Somalia who has not had a functioning government for over two decades. He finally said the U.S. will increase its support for Somaliland.

I heard on the news from Somaliland that one of our officials has said that Somaliland will not attend the meeting as such because it involves Somalia and not in particular issues with Somaliland. Wherein, Somaliland officials will be more than happy to meet with other world officials in regard to Somaliland issues, or even perhaps a legitimate Somalia elected officials but other than that Somaliland will not be involved in the issues of Somalia.

Thats what I got from the news from back home, the one with the internet connection box. Can anyone else verify?

Sorry and sad to say, but there is no elected Somalia officials to sit and talk to. Somalia is currently run by warlords and former Al-shabaab allies. The President and the speaker of the parliament are former Al-shabaab allies and its unknown their present connections with Al-shabaab terrorists. The prime minister is former Puntland minister that was the master architect for sea piracy and human rights violations against the Southern west Somalia refugees. The rest of the TFG are former warlords and other opportunistic parasites, who are there to make money out of international food assistance to vulnerable (famine victims) Somalia IDP.

U.S. Ambassador to SOMALIA, that speaks volumes. I guess it does not matter whether you've been in relative peace for 20 years or 20 million years. In diplomacy talk that does not count. I urge S.Land residents to join soon to be formed Somalia Federal Republic. S.Land still gets to manage its internal affairs. Awdal, Salal and others will join once the dust settles. The forum is now open to rebuttals. Let me get my I-Phone piece while I wait for the thumbs down to cascade upon my post. Amal you first.

Somalia will be run directly form the west … they will direct the directions and agendas … they now have an army there called AMISOM they pay for it … soon they will establish a joint financial organisation that will directly involve in paying salaries and the day to day activity of the government .. and after one year Somalia might find itself governed by under a foreign administration. Somaliland … well if u don't say something in the London conference well you will find yourself part of that country …. Speak now or keep quite for ever…

I think recognition which somaliland has been seeking for 20 odd years is out of the question. Lets not forget we are one nation, one religion so let us not hate each other. It is hypocritical of us to say we believe in islam and yet treat each other with such indifference. Somalia is very complicated at the moment but once Al haraam are out of the way, then we should help our fellow somalis with rebuilding the shattered nation. I now pose a serious question to those who like to be isolated, call themselves SOMALI-LAND and say they want to be independent and the question is what is the real reason why you want to be independent? Why you feel you have no stake or can share political avenue with the rest of Somali people who are as just as you humiliated, tortured, killed, their innocent women raped and children displaced as homeless for the past 20 years and so what makes your cause so different that you can no longer share a life of existence with the rest of Somalia. This is a serious question and please give me a credible sensible answer without the whining of previous regime excuses without the victim card propaganda nonsense! I want to know what makes people of the north different from the people of the south? What makes your so called SOMALI-LAND (LAND of Somali people) different from Somalia Republic?

     Reply
    • Nora says:

The reason Somaliland wishes to separate has gone beyond the old regime. Think of it this way why did some many Somalis (including yourself) flee Somalia during the war and come to the west?
The answer—for a better life, for safety and security of their familes, for jobs and eductaion—-the same reasons why Somalilanders have decided to separate from Somalia. There has been nothing but war, death and famine in Somalia these past 20 years—what sane person would want to be a part of that country?
Somalilanders decided they wanted to live life not fight —and this is the essential difference between Somalia and Somaliland. Somalilanders wanted progress, development and peace, while the rest of Somali wanted war, violence and chaos. So how can two groups of people with two very different objective ever unite?

       Reply
      • Mohamed.A says:

Nora, please don't begin with Victim card – ie – we have been abused, our women and children raped etc etc.. Yes I am not a fool! I accept our brothers of North of Somali were victims of the previous dictator regime. Yes they were oppressed. Yes they were prosecuted. Yes they were killed. Yes they were victimized and had no post or common share for power. However are they saying they were the only once! Are they saying the previous regime singled them OUT!.. C'mon please stop with nonsense. This was systematic discrimination of people was done to whole of Somali people both North and South. The previous regime was so power hungry it stopped at nothing. They looted wealth, killed innocent women and children, took the rights of others, imprisoned political leaders etc.

        • Nora says:

Obviously you did not read my comment—Or you have cause to ignore it because you have no reply to it. I never said anything about the old regime.
Everything I mentioned is about the situation in Somalia now.

Is there still war, violence, famine, chaos in Somalia? YES
Is Somaliland peaceful,, developing, progressing, democratic? YES

Than how can two such very different nations unite? Answer me that question.

      • Mohamed.A says:

My point is all the injustice that happened to our brothers in the North also happened to the poor people of the South and they are not alone in this. It was collectively shared abuse among all the people of Somalia. No one escaped the horrors that followed before clinching days before the collapse and after the collapse of the previous regime. ALL somalis suffered tremendously. So please spare me the whining and crying that the people of North were abused and therefore they claim that they can't co-exist with rest of Somali people as if what happened was Southern people were killing North. It was the Military regime that claimed the lives of innocent women and children just like they did in the South.

Everyone knows what is happening today and the last 20years. You right when there is cancer you should look for a solution but the first solution is not let’s get the knife and cut the leg! You look for remedies, medicine, you try to cure it. Imagine if you cut you leg you can be 1 leg less for the reset of your life. You gone need a wheel chair, you gone be disable for the rest of your life! You gone depend on others for help because you hasted on the decision to cut your leg so quickly maybe you could have found a cure to the cancer. Have you tried to look for cure to Somali cancer? The answer is a BIG NO! That’s a frail argument. Try to come up with something better. As for referendum it is a UN referendum backed by all people of North of South. That is the one I am talking about not some crazy under the table vote with 97% vote when there are so many regions and so many clans of the North saying this break-away state is not for us! So that needs to be looked at who voted and how credible was the VOTE. Did you UN observers monitor the vote? NO so get your acts together guys when there is a referendum is not about lets do one in my back yard and we call it a day there is protocol.

What do you say about the so called referendum? Here is the reality: Somalis are tribal people and their first and foremost allegiance is and will always be to their tribe. Starting breakaway states just means many pieces of Somaliland. The best option is to work together and to think as one entity that is Somali. I suspect that is a rather hopeless thought though given all the vituperative comments that will no doubt resonate from my comments.

Nora and many other Somalilanders have already responded to your questions in a polite and accurate manner yet you still wish to force your beliefs on others. I ask you where does it state that all people of the same ethnicity have to live together under one country. Look at the GCC, Slavic, and Asian countries.

    - China vs Taiwan
    - Croatia, Serbia and Kosovo (former Yugoslavia)
    - UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Yemen (All original nomadic Arabs) etc
    - Libya, Morocco, Algeria (North Africans)
    - Al Sham (Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan)
    - India and Pakistan (use to be one)
    - Thailand and Cambodia
    - Kazakstan, Afghanistan and the other stans
    - United States, Canada, Australia, and many of the English speaking countries have all had roots in the UK
    - South and Central Americas had both their cultural and religious roots in Europe (Spain and Portugal)

All the above mentioned groupings have all shared many ties such as religion, culture, language, and in some cases even dialect. Finally, Djibouti is an ethnically Somali nation and yet Alhamdullah they made the right decision for their people.

Now the time has come for the people of Somaliland to do the right thing for themselves and future generations. Unlike Djibouti, Somalilanders have done more than their share for the greater good of Somalia and you know this. I believe the time has also come for our brothers in the south to sincerely look to their own affairs.

The question you should be asking yourself is how will the south look like in the next 1-5 years?

I say No! Sadly, we have tried for 20 years and failed miserably. Three of the 5 regions have gone their separate ways and the remaining two have destroyed themselves in their failed union. Precious time has also been wasted on countless peace conferences, corrupt governments, and failed initiatives.
With this wasted time, we should have been entertaining the idea of a possible 2 state solution with the idea of possibly rejoining in the future in phases. – peace in the north and south, and negotiate for the other 3 parts. However, as a community, Somalis are MAD. We are so determined to glue Somaliweyne together by force that we have continued to destroy ourselves in the process.

We are talking about recapturing lost lands from Ethiopia and Kenya while we don't even have clean water to drink! Simply put, Somalis don't know how to pick their battles. This WHY Somaliland wants to separate no BSing.

Somalia has become a runaway train heading for a cliff and people keep shouting "SOMALILAND GET ON BOARD YOU'RE ONE OF US!" It's utter madness!

So as I mentioned this failure was Inevitable however just because you failed in something does it make it an excuse to give up. When you fail an exam, do you give up and call it a day. Ofcourse failures are part of life of learning. We can all learn from the failed lessons. However to call we failed so lets give up is a pathetic argument! As I said in my last post we had issues because of many reason but the big one was resource. That was the elephant in the room that no one talked about. Not our intellectuals or government!! Everybody pinged at the opportunity to abuse what little we had and the high corruption. Everyone wanted their guy at the top so he can get us some! This sadly still exists and we need to eliminate that way of thinking. We are all educated and we can for sure contribute to our country. However the key is Unity, can you do something with 1 finger? However you can do something with 5 they form a hand! Think of it from that prospective if all fails!

The ill issues of Somali as we can probably all can agree with is the lack of resources and lack of investment, lack of education and lack of Unity!
With regards to resources, Allhamdolillah Allah blessed our LAND with so much natural resources. However for one reason or another previous government didn’t invest resource or worked with developed countries to drill or mine those resources. In many ways than one we wouldn’t have the situation we have if Somali had a production of Oil since the 1980’s. You see how international community procures of resources to stabiles any nation that is producing OIL so the production of OIL is not interrupted. This is the double standards with the international community. They only care about their end means if their economy or OIL prices will go up. I think with new development in Puntland with their OIL discovery of 10 billion barrel. As well as 2/3 of Somali sitting on even more OIL, plus other natural resources GAS, URANIUM, Iron Ore and Gold. So you can imagine the need to fight to go to the top is no longer required there is plenty to go around for our 9-10million people for whole of Somalia.

@jabuuti_hanoolato, first you should not talk about Somaliland as it is a democratic country, the citizens can vote and change the predisent. Unlike your country where your president put in jail all oppositions, and change the constitution so that he can rule for ever. There is no democracy in Jibuuti. First Jibutians must put their house in order. Also Jibuti is part of Somalia why dont you join the Dawlaada Kuu Meel Gaar and be part of that greater Somalia. Leave Somalilandders alone. Jibuti and Somalia you are all failed state. Jibuti depends only the port and have nothing to be proud. Berbersa port is bigger than Jibuti one, again Somaliland has minerals , gas and oil.

@Mohamed A. The solution of Somalia is unworkable as long as you run after foreignors to solve your proble. The late President of Somaliland Mohamed Ibrahim Egal once offered to host all Somalis from South to come to Hargeisa for a meeting to resolve the issue. Gues who objected to it, were people from puntland. Historically People in Somaliland would solve their problems through clan elders, which is the pillar of success in Somaliland that brought stability. However in Southern Somalia was ruled by Italians who destroyed the somali culture, and no one will listen to each other. For rxample when the Britsh elderly couple were abducted by the piracy, they would not respect their elders and were released after a ransom was paid. How you expect this type of people to be able to solve Somalia problems. Will the meeting in London do difference to the suffering of the Somalis, not at all. There people in UN who have made Somali issue as business. The earn a lot from UN in the name of being leaders of different UN offices. In Nairobi where there is Un offices for Somalia, you would not find a single Somali, all jobs filled by Kenyans. What a shame

      Brother M.Ali,
I hear you loud and clear. I agree with your points and the main issues with Somali as whole in general is 4.5 political paradigms. We need new collective solutions to the problems in hand. The man you mention Mohamed Ibrahim Egal was our neighbour in Somalia Mogadishu, people respected him and they loved him greatly, may Allah forgive his sole. So the points you raised are known to me! However the issues at hand is setting together to solve these problems. Conference in London Insha'Allah gives people hope. Why because the first time in Somali history all Somalis whether they are from North or South will sit under one tree some where in London :) it doesn't matter whether it is a tree or same table point is they would be in the same place, same rooms with 40 other countries discussing real issues to Somalia. Hargeisa government is invited and to my knowledge they are coming hence the article above US ambassador to SOMALIA not SOMALI-LAND is also re-inviting them Cameron government invited them they are expected to show up. A No show is not good for Hargeisa government special their cause.

Mohamed, Somaliweyn is comprises of Five Somali speaking Regions: Somaliland, Jabout, Somalia, Somli-Ethiopian, and Somali-Kenyan. Jabouti went solo when they saw genocide committed against Somaliland and will never compromise the sovereignty. Siyad Barre relinquished his claim over both Somali-Ethiopian in 1988 and Somali-Kenyan in 1984. And there is no body campaigning for it because they are well aware that it is impossible.

They are crying after Somaliland now because they know that Somaliland was the brain behind everything good and the arm and leg that glued them together. Unfortunately, Somalia and Somaliland do not form the dream of the "Great Somalia". Look, what became happened to them after Somaliland left.

Oh dear me, not you again. We had a break from your spiteful comments and constant attacks on Somaliland. It's very ironic you lecture us about Federal and greater Somalia while you refuse to bring your little state along. The only reason you are so against Somaliland is because you feel threaten by recognized Somaliland that might make you invisible. Too bad, I guess Somaliland will be a threat to your little state not to Somalia. And unfortunately you will have only two options in the future: a) to join or diffuse into Somaliland or b) to be barren and abandoned tiny speck of Africa. We Somalilanders strongly recommend our brothers to take option (a) because:
    1) you will not be an invisible Somali state and we will share Somaliland's greatest resources with you therefore;
    2) you will not all your life depend on international aid or lose out
    3) with us you will never ever have to worry about being bullied by Eritrea or get chased with knifes by afars
    4) Your land can be liberated from France and you will re-join your fellow Somalis for strength. The future is bright my friend

Otherwise I'm afraid I can only say bonne chance à votre camp peu de français

We issaqs and dulbahantes/warsangelis share everything; blood, land, culture and we have intermarried all our lives and that's why we even have sub clans in issaq like bah dulbahnate, bah warsangli etc. And in burco and eastern Somaliland the dulbahnates and the issaqs are inan iyo inaanti families tol iyo xidi. Silanyo and the government need to do more to make it more appealing for them to jump on board all together. Somaliland is multi tribal state and inshAllah we will succeed and help Somalia stand on their two feet. We will look after our little sister state aka Djibouti too even though they are against us all the time but that's okay we can take it we are their bigger sister state.

Long live Somaliland and may Allah safeguard it.

Sorry forgotten to mention my last comment of President's Obama' State Union Speech that was referred to real Somalilander, others nothing to loose and they don't share similar aspirations or life value historically.

The reason of referred that speech was, as we Somalilander share with Americans some similar values and way of thinking.

1)Standup together in warring and difficult times. Example in last week was one of the biggest demonstrations campaigned from Las Anood to Awdal in every village and every town the most effective means supporting Somaliland unity.
Secondly, when how everybody in combined houses and the congress were supporting the President's speech from first moments to the last minutes regardless of different views in respect of among the political parties and people about the current government policies.

    2) We freed our country with unity and encouragements similar to American history of freedom struggles.

    3) More importantly USA is most single super power supporting and backing strategically the Somaliland security and its independence in the back yard. and listen with care what's he says and that's applies to Somaliland only, because others have nothing to loose and they aren't sharing life value and similarity of struggle history . However, Allied forces led by USA eventually captured Italian overseas colonies and defeated in its attempt to conquer Ethiopia and Somaliland under the Fascist government of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.
