MOGADISHU (Somalilandpress) — Mogadishu’s streets never seem to be without a corpse or two. Whether it is the African Union peacekeepers’ bodies being dragged by children on the dusty roads of Mogadishu or bodies of insurgents or the heap of civilian corpses piled on top of one another after being struck by mortars in the Bakara market, the streets in this city have witnessed more horrors than can be imagined. Usually people take no notice of the bodies lying on the concrete pavements and it is often the putrid stench of blood that sharply brings the decaying bodies to one’s attention. But the stiff corpses of the African Union forces seem to attract an unusual sort of attention in Mogadishu. Many residents flocked to the Baar Ubax Street today to witness another public event: the dead body of a Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldier killed in a fire fight against the Al Shabab.
The Islamists have been parading hundreds of newly-trained fighters in the cities of Mogadishu, Baladweyne, Marka and Rabdhuure in the last few days and have vowed to step up their attacks against the African Union troops and the weak Transitional federal Government (TFG). Upon their arrival in Mogadishu, the newly-trained Islamist fighters, known as the ‘Mustafa Abu Yazid Brigade’ in tribute to the late Al Qaeda leader who was killed in an American air strike, immediately began their offensive. By midnight the Islamist fighters launched a surprise attack at one of the Amisom bases near Makka Al Mukarram street – a vital artery that connects Mogadishu’s KM 4 circle to the Presidential Palace and the airport and is also a supply line for the Amisom troops based in those areas – and caught the peacekeepers off guard. It is reported that up to 5 peacekeepers were killed in the attack and dozens more injured.
The Somali government soldiers who were manning the posts along with the peacekeepers are said to have fled the battlefield shortly after the exchange of gunfire began. And this is one of the grave concerns that the Amisom forces in Mogadishu seem to have these days. After several such incidents where TFG soldiers have deliberately deserted their comrades in the line of fire, the Amisom troops no longer have that bond of trust and cordiality with the government soldiers and the relationship between the two forces appears to be severely strained. The government soldiers, on their part, complain of lack of pay and cannot, as they say, be expected to put their lives on the line at all times.
Another obstacle that hinders the African Union troops’ advance into the Islamist controlled territory is the labyrinthine network of alleyways and streets that Mogadishu is renowned for. The intricately designed streets require excessive knowledge and some neighbourhoods have proven to be impenetrable even for the Ethiopian troops in 2007. But now with the relationship between the Amisom forces and the Somali government soldiers seemingly unpleasant, the peacekeepers are often left wandering out on their own in the streets of Mogadishu. As a result they are often ambushed by the Islamists who know these intricate passages very well.
It must be a tough decision for the AU spokesman, Mr Barigye Ba-Hoku, to make. So far the spokesman has denied all reports suggesting that AU peacekeepers were either killed, captured or dragged through the streets of Mogadishu – even after their photos were circulating throughout the media.
“There was an attack on one of our positions by the rebels as they usually do and some of our soldiers suffered minor injuries,” he said.
One can only wonder about the state of mind of those soldiers. What must be going through the minds of the poor African Union soldiers dutifully guarding their posts outside the Presidential Palace when they see the bodies of their fellow soldiers being displayed or dragged through the streets of Mogadishu! It must be excruciatingly upsetting for a soldier operating in such a hostile territory to learn, beforehand, of the misfortunes that lie in front of him and the thorny path that he has to traverse in order to achieve his goal.
And when the remaining soldiers see images of their fallen comrades in Mogadishu’s Baar Ubax Junction, and then hear the spokesman’s vehement rejection, it only adds to their agony – making it clear to them that if they were to fall into enemy hands, their seniors would also disown them too.

"…what must be going through the minds of the poor African Union soldiers dutifully guarding their posts.." so says the post.
These soldiers are not 'poor' and there is nothing dutiful they are doing . They are hardcore veteran rapist of Rwanda and the Congo who Museveni could not keep in Uganda when they completed their mission. The win win situation for Musevini was to keep them away from Uganda and at the same time UN pay them handsomely. UNOSOM has been a gift for Musevini but it might be his end-game.
Somalia will never know peace unless all foreign forces and interferers are kicked out by the people. Somalia should imulate Somaliland's way of governace. They should go back to true Islam and somali tradition.
the country does not need islam , it already is an islamic country. what the people need is Jesus Christ the son of God!!He can save only he…the people and leaders need to turn to the true God and repent and cry out…then will he hear them.
Erika dear…Islam has no problem with prophet&Messenger Jesus
known as Isaiah the Messiah son of Marie, also with other big
prophets&Messengers notably Moses/Aron, David&Solomon,
Joseph&Jacob, Isaac&Ishmael, Abraham&Lot, Noah&Adam
and thousands of other less powerful prophets, all the way from
Adam&Eve thru to Prophet&Messenger Mohamed.
The definition of Islam simply means Submission to Almighty God
and the only one GOD not pularized into GODS!.
Isaiah(Jesus) was created by the special powers of GOD without
marriage just like GOD created father and Mother of the human race
ADAM&EVE. One Simple example, Moses and GOD were in
constant direct dialogue without intermediary then why Moses is not
the Son of GOD like as you claim jesus is the Son of GOD???
Erica please try read more about the Islam and am sure you will
get good answers that all Religions of GOD–ALLAH belong to the
same source without contradictions.
Cheers.
Cont'd
Also Politics and Religions must not be confused as the Western
free World chose to seperate the Church from the Govts.
Cheers.
" . . . Jesus Christ the son of God . . . turn to the true God and repent and cry out . . . "
With language like that I just know we're in for a hard time. Quick what do you get when you combine a Christian fundamentalist with an Islamic one? Answer: the Crusades.
Erika, you post exposes you for someone who does not know or care to know anything about how Somalia functions. All you did was make a fool out of Christians in front of everyone else who reads Somaliland Press. Shame on you.
I'm so upset when i see christians who can't decise by himself and he go to query his priest how to behave with muslims, or a muslim who ask his imam if he can visit a christian. Whatsoever is the answer received, neither one should try to convert the other, that's for sure.
Don't be silly! Many the African countries, includes Uganda, have had their fair share of utter turmoil and violence. But even by poor African standards, the Somali situation is pitiful. Our beautiful land is just as exploited by foreign invaders as it is by foreign terrorists claiming to be there to fight the invaders. We all have our relatives in Muqdishu, tell me who is enjoying shebab? Are they better? Who asked them? Let us stop all foreigners includes the terrorists. Islam and Somali culture is both wonderful and could be perfect for our people. No to shebab, no to AMISOM, no to Ethiopians, yes to Somalia and Islam. Our local leaders are just warloads. Why? This is not good.
Allah should help poor pple in mogadisho, they are between a rock and hard place, the shabaab, the so called somali govt, the africans and the ethopians are all making money on the blood of the poor somalis.
subhnallah….
Somalilander, you should be ashamed of yourselves! As a Somali and a Isaq, it hurts me to watch my fellow Hwaiye brothers being butchered, slaughtered, raped by African, American and Europeans. Everynight in by bed in the UK, I almost fall into tears, thinking about what the Somali woman and children in the South are going through.
It is a shame that we, Somalis, have not yet had the mental capacity to realize that we have nations in the West and African who haye us and are commiting genocide against our people.
inshallah alqaid a and alshabbab will defeat the somal igoverment and will bring back peace . they will spread jihad in africa and will be the soliders of alqaida in somalia those who claim Jesus will save them inshallah they will get killed .Jesus was a propthet and a human he couldnt save himself what make you think he will save you from the soliders of Allah
There clear indications these African soldiers making situation in Mogadishu even more dangerous. They should be send back to their families and feed their children in Ugand and Brundi. These poor African soldiers shouldn't be in Mogadishu and they wouldn't be Somalis solutions. African soldiers, there record showed that they are not capable such a UN peacekeeper instead they usually take advantages from civilians. Civilains are the receivers of all the gun fire from all derictions.
Their leaders aways denied even if the pictures be seeing all over the world why? because somebody is making profit from other people is blood what a sad sories coming from Mogadisho and Somalis who couldn't govern themselves. If Somalis can govern themselves, there won't be a room for all the wolves around the world to come to Mogadishu for their shares. Mogadishu brothers, its the time to stop fighting otherwise, when you all gone someone else will take over your beautiful city.
What is the need for posting the gruesome pictures of dead soldiers? Regardless of their nationality, religion, and political affiliation, these dead soldiers are the human just like us with parents, siblings, partners, and offspring who will be in great distress if they see these images of their loved ones. As Muslims we are required to honour the dignity of the dead and refrain from committing barbaric acts like dragging the dead through the streets, no matter how much we hated the dead. I appeal to my brothers in Mogadishu to come to their senses, end all this violence and barbarism, and lead dignified lives like the rest of humanity.
So many of the respond here is the problem of our country. Every young man has a "vision" to fight, fight, fight. Nobody has "vision" to reopen the university, the schools and hospitals, functioning government bureaucracy. If it is not the Ethiopians, then the Ugandans, then the other clans… but always it is only fighting. Somalia is desparate for the next level of leadership to arise. People who remember when it was Somalia with the best teachers that we used to "export" to Yemen, Djibouti and Saudi. The shortsight problem is killing us. Too many Rambos but no enough strategic plan and action. Even now under shebab areas, what is it? We all have people there, why dont you asked them! The invaders and the terrorists are all the same… God will deliver great Somalia from them each. Since Barre the essence of the fighting is same. Every group thinks it is different and direction from Allah, but they are all the same each. The young man in UK who can't sleep, instead to raise money for schools and clinics all over Somalia, he want to come and die. Where the vision in that one? Please my brothers, let us think critical and practical what is truly to "fight" for our people.
It is easy to pick up a gun and fight for glory. But it is difficult to pick up a book afterwards and fight for something so much less tangible like an economy or civil service, especially when there is seemingly so little glory to be had from that. South Africa has proven this since 1994.
Steps have to be taken though, however small they may seem. Somaliland has proven that the strife can be overcome. But those from the south must force themselves to look out for the well-being of not just their children, but their neighbor's children as well.
Amison is just adding to the problems of Somalia, who knows the amount of civilians they have killed and wounded. They need to leave and let the Somalis decide their fate.
Al Shabaab would no doubt take over but with no enemy to fight they would turn on each other, also the foreign fighters with Shabaab need to leave and find some other Muslim Country to mess up.
The sooner these blood thirsty animals (Amison and Al Shabaab and co) leave the country and allow normal people to return and rule themselves the better.
Amison is just adding fuel to the fire already there, but without Amison, Alshabaab would have been the lords of Mogadisho. What is the solution then now? Somaliland and Puntland to be united and force the Alshabab, Xisbul Islam and TFG out of Somalia once and for all and let Amison go their respective homes, this is the only way, further war can be averted.
M.J.Musa.
My proposition is:
1. Dismantle the useless TFG, ask the AMISOM to leave Somalia, and let Alshabaab takeover Mogadishu.
2.. Bring together all the clans south of Galmudug and reconcile them in Somaliland or Puntland. Get their intellectuals to negotiate to form a federation of several State South Somalia governments (without Puntland and Galmudug who have already got good regional governments).
3. Encourage all the residents of the South to relocate temporarily to Galmudug, Puntland, or Somaliland. Alshabaab will then run out of people to rule and subjugate and revenues to collect.
4. Armies of Somaliland, Puntland, Djibouti, and Galmudug together with the patriots of the South should then form a battle group and take on the enemies of the Somali people.
5. Install the negotiated Southern government in Mogadishu to govern areas south of Galmudug and form an army and police forces for those areas.
6. Bring Puntland, Galmudug, and the other pieces together to form a small transparent, and accountable federal South Somalia government.
The most effective solution for our peiple is the more simple and realistic one which is clear and easy to buy in. First things first. I appreciate the proposition of Abraham, but can you even imagine that one to happen? The things that bring peace in any countries is giving people good reasons to live in the peace. If more people have the small businesses, send their childrens to school and university, grow food for profit, have a chance to build their own homes and buy their own cars, and pay their due taxes to support the system. The millionaire tycoons of Muqdishu, they are benefiting from endless wars… they monopolises goods and services industry, they own the armies used by warloads, they even leases the "technicals" used in the street battles. The very poor on the other hands, they have suffered and lost so much already, there is nothing to lose if they die anyway so they fight. The people who keep peace in every countries are the ones in the middles. Which we can only manage to see in Somalia if we continue to send the kids to study not to fight. Support the clinics and health centers. Nshallah we shall achieve it.
Wars aren't holly. The phrase "Sure, it's a war, but it is a holly war!" belong to Christians were the firsts to promote this slogan, during crusades, when they force the communities nerby to change their religion and if they refuse that, they think is justified to obliterate the entire population. This bad thing was quickly learn by the muslims leaders who see this as a new opportunity to put a side the differencies between their countries and raise their combined armies against european culture. They learn this lesson so well, they even sur class their teachers: in some point in history, the Ottoman Empire was master upon half of Europe, and the Christian Church was crumbling. But this was in the Middle Age, when people do not know any geography, and they think the earth are flat. Back then the communications was so bad among people, was too many barriers between civilisations because of language, that they attack ethother on site.
