ROME — The UN food agency will host a crisis meeting on the escalating humanitarian crisis in drought-hit Somalia on July 25, a spokesman for the Rome-based organisation told AFP on Monday.
“The meeting will be next Monday (July) 25th here at FAO” following a request from France in its role as head of the G20 group of leading world economies, said Erwin Northoff, a spokesman for the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
“Mainly the emphasis is on the Horn of Africa. All the FAO member countries have been invited,” he said, adding that although this would be officially a ministerial meeting, heads of state could also attend.
Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with his counterparts in Brussels, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said: “France has asked and obtained a meeting in Rome… to launch a special aid programme for Somalia.”
“We have also asked for the EU to mobilise all of its means,” Juppe said, adding that Paris was working on bilateral aid.
“The succession of bad agricultural seasons and particularly unfavourable weather conditions have dramatic consequences for millions of people in the region,” the French government said in a letter to FAO.
On a visit in Johannesburg, British Prime Minister David Cameron said the drought was “the most catastrophic” in a generation.
The FAO, the World Food Programme and the international charity Oxfam launched an appeal 10 days ago for urgent and durable international, warning that 12 million people lacked food in the region and were in a critical state.

Somalia in general has other major problems causing these mass suffering. The current drought could be handle by Somalis, they had experience of handle more worst droughts in the past with limited support from outside.
Lack of peace is the major problem and we should address problems one by one otherwise we all never get the solution or save any lives.
Lack of peace in Somalia is your own creation, you thickheaded MORON!
Stop being the xaasid you are and let the world help the poor people devastated by the drought.
Asalam,
Cali Dheere what's with the name calling…this is not grade 3…Maxamuud has a great point. We have an issue that needs to be addressed because all the aid in the world will not fix what's broken. Another point to remember is what about the next drought and the one after that. Long term planning is key and PEACE in the region is a big slice of reality.
I notice every-time someone has an opinion on this website it tends to upset the demons of another person. Let's have a positive dialogue where we can give one another positive feedback. Remember we all have the same dream for our country (whatever you support) which is NABAD.
We have to stand up together to save our race or ethnicity. It is our number one priority to safeguard our existences and prosperities of our people. Somalia is a rich country our Allah gave to us. It locate in the center of world, it is sunny, it has plenty marine wealth, one of longest beaches in Africa, it has vast livestock, minerals, fertile land suitable for all types of plantations and on top of all it has very long beach which could be the world's best tourist destination. We need to respect, not hate, and be kind and fair to each other. Then we have to create unity between us, justice for all and equality.
In 1960, some great Somalis recognized and practised all you mentioned above.
Then what happened? Who went against all you wrote?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.
Remember we had many enemies such as our neighboring countries, the two superpowers were our enemies, many non Muslim countries in Africa/Asia and Latin America were our enemies, many Muslim countries like Libya, Yemen and many other countries were our enemies too. We ha many enemies "enternl ones" who were serving our external enemies and they were who brought the differences in between us. I believe we can sit and sort our differences in a Somali traditional way
From 1960 – 1980 we were united and there were some problem like any other country we could solved in a Somali traditional way but our leaders were not capable people and they went to the current way. We cannot correct any mistake by using wrong method of solving the cause.
Got your point Mahdi, but you should see what this mohamoud guy is writting in other topics. I like to call spade – 'a spade', so I will stick with what I called him.
Back to the topic: The situation in Somalia right now is dire and catastrophic and Somalis cannot handle it by themselves. Somalia need Intensive Care! It need immediate emergency aid from the International Community. What the UN is doing in Rome is right and WE should encourage and appreciate it.
Regarding PEACE, nobody can help Somalia except themselves.
May ALLAH have mercy on us all.
May ALLAH shower his bounty on us all.
Real men love peace because they know the value and joy of come with peace. They are capable of doing war when it is necessary but cowards know nothing about war and the peace has no value for them.
Exactly!
Right now, Somalia's cowards know nothing about war and peace has no value for them.
Let us be serious like mature people I am Somali, I belong to Dhulahante tribe and I never had any issue against Isaak. But when the current government attacked the innocent nomads of Kashaale and other villages early 2011 it was surprise to me and it became clear to me that we are not better than South Somalia. Then I started reading you debates and comment and I found that you were explicitly demonizing non Isaak Somalilanders. The question is how you are planning to prosper and became a viable country if you already denying the right of non Hhabarjeclo somalilanders.
The topic is about drought and the dire situation in Somalia.
Hold your tribal gibberish for another day!
Peace
Everybody in Somaliland and horn of africa have put aside there different and come to mutual agreement.even tho ethiopia n eritrea are enemies and somalia sees somaliland as enemie we are neighboring countries and should work together for peace.
I thought westerners were cleverer than the former Lords Resistance army now masquerading as "peacekeepers". The cause of the problem is the bestiality they have created and the encouragement which they have been given to the criminals behind the ignorance and violence. Any Muslim person in the land who chooses to bring peace is stamped with the "backward" tag, but others who create havoc are welcomed in blush hotels in foreign countries in the name of "reconciliation conference".
If I was one of those hungry children, I would sue the UN and its sponsors before Somalis.
To operate war is very expensive and no Somali group could afford to continue these on going conflicts. Foreign influence is destroying Somalia, eradicating Somali people from Somalia. It be came normal traditional to experience the increasing number of thousands of Somali refugees volunteers joining UN concentration refugee camps.
To operate was is very expensive, whoever is funding these on going conflicts and functions are the causing the problems of mass genocides which we are witness. It is not in one region only it is all over the country. No one cane bring stability in Somalia because the cause of the civil war originally was not Somali one.
The causes of Horn of Africa crisis is the Western world itself and what ever they are trying to do now is just a few down payment for the destructions that they cause for many years, especially, polluting the environments with their Industries out put that causes climate changes in this part African and this is a fact.
Also, the leaders of this region the current ones
and the previous ones are all in the pocket of these European Countries. Unless, this situation is changed this crisis will continue coming back.
Thank you Obsiye and we need our current cheap leaders to understand that we will have no country if they eradicate Somali people. The current eradication rate is very high.
The Arab league has a major role on this also. When Egypt annexed Somaliland they should have stayed out of our business. The irony is they are also getting rid of a regime but still support another regime. Arab league get it together you sound like hypocrites.
