Statement by the Press Secretary on the Elections in Somalia

The United States congratulates Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud on winning the support of Parliament and becoming Somalia’s new president, and the Somali people for completing this momentous political transition. Today’s vote represents an important milestone for the people of Somalia, and a crucial step forward along the path of building a representative government.

With leadership comes tremendous responsibility. The United States calls on Somalia’s leaders to usher in a new era of governance that is responsive, representative, and accountable. We encourage President Hassan and all members of Parliament to be inclusive and collaborative, and to build on today’s vote by continuing to strengthen democratic institutions, improving stability and security, and bringing tangible improvements to the lives of Somalia’s citizens.

The United States stands with the people of Somalia during this historic moment, and will continue to be a committed partner moving forward. Today’s achievement would not have been possible without the contributions of the African Union, United Nations, Intergovernmental Authority on Development, and regional stakeholders. While today’s vote marks the end of the transition period, much work remains to be done. The United States calls on the international community to reaffirm its commitment to Somalia, and to help realize a more secure and prosperous future for the Somali people.

a sign of the times. this is the Somali republic we aspire. a republic that the world recognizes its importance both geographically and politically. a republic that is unique in terms of the ethnicity of its people(Somalis) the language Af-somali ) an their religion ( sunni shafi muslims) . a potential to become the most prosperous country in the world if we get our acts together and ditch tribalism and become nationalist. remember one man one vote one job one life and only you will go to you grave. your tribe is a way politicians control you and keep you small and take your future and if you are lucky live as a second citizen in another country.

Another Sheikh not elected by the general public people but by few men calling themselves Somalia's parliament lol

    • Yusuf says:

      Muna,

You are right, but still the process is much better than it was before. Somalia is where Somaliland was 21 years ago, when they selected President Egal in Borama. I hope they will follow Somalilands foot-steps and succeed in their future. On the other hand, they will only chase their tails if they continue with Somaliweeyn empty slogan. I have seen many Somalians who out grow the lack of self confidence and newly embarrassed the two state solution.

I think that the World would be better of if the Arab Springs uprisings could be transformed
into the EU/EC integrated institutions with the blessings of the USA. The EU/EC common
nomen confederated Govts, benefitting their Civil liberties societies to co-exist in a new
world order eco-sound systems. The EU/EC is ideal for the AU,AL/OIC,Latin America,Asia etc etc.
Perhaps re-addressing the IMF/World bank is equally important. The World of the 21 m. needs
reassessing the over-stretched existing World order. Perhaps the EU/EC systems could be
extended to other parts all over the Global Village.
    Cheers.

  4. Kayse says:

God bless the Somali Republic. Step by step, it will recover. Brick by brick, it will stand solid. One by one it will unify. I just don't get people who hate their country so much because of the mistakes of one man in his grave and his long gone regime.

Somalia has gone so many transition and some people seem to be stuck in the late 1980s.

Looks like time has frozen in their part of the world, its all mind game. If you fall you pick yourself up and not crawl…and become an enemy of your legs (Somali nation).

Let the reconciliation begin like a new Spring. Our enemy #1 is dead and there won't be as much meddling as before. He must not make his first trip Ethiopia but to Turkey who contributed so much. He must not make Kenya his first visit either.

    • burci says:

That is right mr kayse, our enemy # 1 is dead which is all good news.somalia will rebuild it self in no time.

  5. sahra says:

    • abdinuur says:
