The situation in the Horn of Africa is basically of that of famine and unprecedented drought affecting many countries, but when this catastrophe eases, and the Shabaab leaves the operating theater, there is another danger that I foresee coming without any doubt, unless the International Community addresses it wisely. Somaliland celebrated 20th anniversary of its reclamation of its Statehood in May, 2011 and is proud of its unique achievements that are very rare in Africa, which now faces a real danger. The current events in Somalia many have said in length, but due to the momentum that is building now due to the hidden agendas of some, this warrants us to look beyond our nose.
The denial of AU to support and acknowledge the rights of Somaliland people’s self determination was a tragic mistake and still is. In my view this could spark a new war in the already troubled Horn, unless the will of my people is seriously considered by the International Community. Now the TFG is praising itself, and they are openly boasting that, once Al Shabaab is dealt with, their main priority will focus on destabilizing Somaliland (‘THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN AFRICA), instead of concentrating on rebuilding they shattered country. This is bad news for the Horn. The signs of that bad news are already showing, when you consider the Puntland kidnapping of the Somaliland elected authorities in the Sool province of Somaliland. That was a naked aggression of serious magnitude, and in my view was a coordinated effort by TFG and Puntland.
Another unfortunate event is that of total absence of those who suppose to protect the one and only democracy in Horn, which is vulnerable in the eyes of those who believe it’s against their interest, and will subvert anytime they choose, if those who believe in democracy did not take the necessary steps to protect before its too late. Somaliland emerged confidently from Somalia’s disintegration and inter-clan conflict in 1991, and Solely built its destroyed country without any outside help. It’s the most effective working democracy that should be protected by the UN, AU and the each and every government on earth who believes the good governance and democracy in real terms.
Somaliland has all the requirements of a statehood and provides for its people with the meager income, better than many recognized existing states in the Continent of Africa, without access to resources, funding or aid from anywhere, yet the big powers who claim guardians of democracy are yet to see beyond their nose.
Somaliland new government has made concerted effort to increase my country visibility and political contacts at the international arena, but there are those who subvert every step of the way, and this proves the collective statement of the foreign ministries of the South Africa and Tanzania. Just read in between the lines, and what comes out for you will definitely be astonishing? Who’s Mr. Mahega, the Representative of UN to Somalia? He is Tanzanian who is here to destabilize Somaliland, and I believe he is the one who is behind the new development that is building now, but he and others are forgetting something, and its this: We the Somalilanders have achieved what we have today due to the peace that we cherish and the patience of our people. We believe we will emerge victorious at the end, because there are signs showing now that there is a possibility of countries heading to unilaterally recognise Somaliland, but the alarm bell I am ringing here, is what we and the international community desire to be seriously considered..
We expect from this world to support our fulfilment of many of the criteria listed in the agreements that define statehood, particularly the Montevideo Convention of 1933, or else, whoever tries to ignore the rights of our people and supports the continuation of wars in the Horn, we will meet with fierce resistance that we are renowned for, the way we have liberated our country in 1980s.
Somaliland people are expected from AU to bring back on to the table of 2005 AU fact finding mission outcome which clearly and objectively viewed the case of Somaliland should not be linked to the notion of “opening a Pandora’s box” Another mission of 2008 further says that Somaliland fulfils many of the aspects of state recognition and if recognized could be the source of stability in the Horn of Africa.
Hence, what is holding back the AU to gallantly endorse the legal divorce of Somaliland from the failed state of Somalia, or do they want to resuscitate the failed until it comes out of the long comma and encourage to destabilize Somaliland?
Finally, those who care of the stability of the Horn, must and without delay, take the right decision and allow Somaliland to be part of the international community and enjoy the the hard earn of statehood.

If the so-called African leaders think's that Somaliland as country will suddenly fold and join South Somalia, they are day really dreamers. Somaliland has survived for 20 years without recognition from any Country, while it's enemies uses every trick they know how to destroy they have failed miserably. They will try again and I am sure they will fail again and again. it was its people wishes and it is still it's people who had made this decision and this country will exist forever
with or without any recognition. So please, those of you who calls themselves African leaders and they stand for African self-determination, has to think seriously before you mess things up.
Somaliland the righteous will always prevail.hamdulah
May Allah protect and forge great union amongst the
inhabitants of Somaliland. What Allah plans for.Us no
can mess with it. We shall succeed and overcome all
adversity as we are on the Right!
@ mr Omar nice article, but you missed the main point and the real one which is that TFG will gain nothing from destabilizing Somaliland and i doubt anyone in Mogadishu are wishing harm for the people of Somaliland since they consider you brothers, TFG has its plate full and will have no time or money or even army to engage another conflict. I totally agree with you that once the famine is gone and Shabab defeated then any Somali president will turn his or her attention to the rest of the country and will try to find ways to unite the country since each clan or state is claiming to be independent country, having said that i doubt a current or future president will seek to unite the country by force, the only way would be a peaceful and diplomatic solution.
Thank you Omar for this insightful article. However, I doubt any Somalia government will attempt to capture Somaliland by force, but I agree that they will try to dirty tricks to destabilize. Rest assure, Somalia is too dumb to out smart Somaliland and I guarantee that all their stupid tricks will fail.
Thank you again for exposing Mahiga's ignorance along with the Tanzanian Minister.
No one on earth can force us to unite with Somalia again…We will fight to the last man and woman….If you don't believe that , just try it..
Somalilands greatest treat is not coming from outside, but from the bad leadership from Kulmiyie and current tribalistic government who has divided us…. Udub has return to save the motherland, Silanyo has to go! Hero Riyale has to return!
I think you know nothing about Las Anod , so stop calling yourself a Las Anod boy. If you are really from Las Anod, just name the first village immediately west of Las Anod in the coming hour or so. Do not cheat we are in Ramadan!!!
No need to test Las Anod Boy whether he is from Las Anod or not, to me he seems to be a proud Las Anodian Somalilander :)
Kill yourself.
To Yusuf: Kill Yourself.
@las anod
sxb you sell out wallahi, your here entertaining our enemy. our ancestors give up their lives liberating somalia from the british invaders and here you are selling our land to the highest bidder. wallahi feel sorry for you.
Las Anod is ours we will fight to the end.
" Las Anod is ours we will fight to the end"
MJs fighting their own battles? Did hell freeze over? Did Netanyahu accept Islam?
Feel sorry for your own people brotha, the Dhulbhante aren't the ones dragging the Somali name through the mud with their constant pirating.
@ Las Anod Boy
When Silanyo finishes his term how about a person who hails from Lasanod we are demoqratic country and our leaders can come from any region.
@ Las Anod
The internal challenges facing our young nation has nothing to do with Riyale or Silanyo. This issue has to do with our Dhulbhante brothers mostly. Puntland does not spare any efforts trying to drive a wedge between the various communities namely the Isaaq and Harti, and the Dhulbhante aren't resisting.
Puntland preaches segregation between the communities and the Dhulbhante fall for these tricks despite centuries of co-existing and intermarrying. All this just goes PUFF out the window when Faroole comes calling.
One day the Dhulbhante are fine, then killing, then they go back to being fine, then 1 text msg from Faroole and its bloodshed all over again. In no other city in Sool, is there as much chaos as there is in Las Anod.
In the most polite way, I am saying the Dhulbhante are confused!
We will rebel as long as the evil Kulmiyie government exists, and stop your silly talk if the majority was aganist Somaliland will you control Sool? !
okay fair play and I can respect that, but what has you so heated up against Kulmiyie? Has Silanyo done anything wrong after the SSC peace agreement?
In a modern democracy, political parties do not exist to satisfy the political aspirations of any one community. There objective, as the ruling party, should be to implement their stated campaign goals and try to build bridges with those that did not vote for them.
So the really question we should be asking ourselves as Somaliland Citizens is what has this party done well and in what areas do they need to improve? Is it a matter of keeping their stated promises to certain community groups, Is it the economy, education system, infrastructure or is it a matter of being more inclusive?
The Second point I would like to make is what if Kulmiyie exists – Is that a good enough reason to rebel in a democracy? I don't like this political party and so I will shoot up the place :) No! This doesn't happen in Europe and North America, so why should it be okay in Somaliland. If anyone is unhappy with any particular party they should exercise their individual right to vote them out of office the next they vote. Another option would also be informing their regional representatives of their grievances etc. At no time should any citizen believe that they are above the law or feel they can simply skip over all the peaceful alternatives and go straight to guns. Somaliland is everyone's home.
For example, from your last post, you made it clear that you champion Riyale and his Udub party; which is your right. However, despite keeping the peace, I felt Riyale and his party did nothing for the economy throughout this 8 years in power (well above the legal limit). I also believe Silanyo to be an old war horse who is struggling to come to terms with his new role as president and not the SNM leader.
My party of choice is UCID, the party of the young generation. Unfortunately, however, I never liked Faisal Warabe and find him to be a fascist for a lack of better word. Despite being Isaaq myself, I have always found him to be an extremist Isaaq who if given power would lead Somaliland into years of senseless bloodshed. Try stilling that to the Cida Galih with a straight face :)
So what's left? Answer: The old war horse kkk unless of course my beautiful Sanaag region comes up with a new party then I am jumping ship. These are my 2 shillings on the topic :)
My apologizes for the typos. I don't proof right just post :)
Somaliland has left the unity FOREVER so the AU and UN has no choice than to recognize it. Don't forget that Somaliland's case is not like any other case it's very unique and it fulfills all the AU requirements so don't worry guys our recognition will soon be announced inshAllah.
Most of African countries are all based on colonial borders and only we have ignored it and decided to unite for the love of somalinimo. This is AFRICA and colonial borders are their my friends, imagine without colonial borders we would have been with the Ethiopians now and Somalia is telling us to go against the British borders lol
Somaliland does not need legal divorce from Somalia and African Union themselves are dictators.
If we have The best kept secrets in Africa why we should bother!
We should recognized ourselves and the rest comes. Inshallah
long live Somaliland
