Somaliland:Tribalism and its Problems in Our Society

PART ONE

In my previous articles, I talked about tribalism in general and also what is mentioned in our religion, regarding tribalism, however on this article, I would like to go deep on its problems or should I say side effects.

Sometimes I talk to myself and i talk loud so i can hear what i am saying and I answer back to my myself, people are two kinds, those who speak to themselves silently and likes of me who talk loudly so they hear, understand, analyse  and answer back to themselves, the last discussion I had with myself was that I was asking myself was, if our people were promoting nationalism, same way as they are promoting tribalism, we would have been in a better position and achieved more as a nation, in terms of basically everything. Don´t you think so, hope you do?

I would say that we somalis, somalilanders have a very strong love and loyalty to our own tribes than our country, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that love and loyalty to the tribes as long as there are no negative aspect, but why can we not have that love and strong loyalty to our beloved country is in fact beyond my comprehension.

We need to promote nationalism, rather than tribalism for our country´s economically, socially, politically and developments wise. We need to know and realise that our country is bigger than our tribes and also needs to be aware that as a tribe we cannot do much, but as nation we can do more. And to do promote nationalism, we have to face or come with a clean heart.

Things that got me worried are as follows. I realised recently that some of our people will not contribute to the country by any means, whether it?s a collecting contribution for a good cause or to look for recognition. etc. because he or they don´t get on or maybe they don´t like the government or the president. May be the president is from this tribe where there was always a friction between the two tribes. Ridiculous, isn´t it.

I said that as citizen of Somaliand, as a human being and as a Somaliland diaspora, we cannot sit and watch the terrible accidents that is occurring in that road daily, we would like to contribute to this humanitarian project of berbera/Hargeisa second road. The distance between berbera is 88 miles or 147 km, so I said let us construct or build 1 mile or 2 miles every few months. I said every somalilanders who lives inside and outside will pay $20 a month for a year, of course all of us can, after we have collected that much money, then we will ask the government to add the rest and also we will ask other countries to assist us.

I was amazed and astonished to know that 8 of the 15 people questioned were negative and to some extent some of them said, why we would help this government and that president. Believe in me, I was gob smacked rather than shocked. It is shocking?

This is one of the least problems tribalism can create, cause or caused to our society. How anyone with a brain can have this negative thought on his mind, regardless of their education and background IS BEYOND BELIEVE

The impact of this terrible tribalism can make people to think the opposite, can create conflict between tribes as it normally does, as well as it can damage our national interest. People prefer to put tribes interest before the nation interest, the impact can also cause separation and disunity in to the society, which in return can pose a threat to our national unity as well as it can create a political instability in our country. God almighty forbids.

If you look back the history in the African continent and see what has happened to the countries like Ruanda and Brundi, you will come to know that it all started with the tribalism, therefore, we should refrain anything that can cause us disunited and hatred amongst us.

We should really work hard remembering the difficulties that we went through for the past 50 years. Our expectations after 1991 were to follow up with developments for our country but tribalism appears to be a major problem. The government need to put drastic measures to abolish tribalism. Our sheikhs and wadaads should engage more and teach and educate the people about tribalism and its effect and problems in the society, it´s all there in the Quran, they need to talk about it openly in the streets and in the masjids, especially on Friday?s khutbahs . this will probably minimize our chances of holding false and imaginary beliefs on other tribes and the people can trust each other.

Our togetherness in this can get rid of the tribalism problems

My question will be. Can we really end tribalism in Somaliland?  I think we can but we need time and patience…….

I will end my article with the famous prover of Abdilahi sultan tImacade, might Allah almighty forgive him.

Dugsi ma leh qabyaaladi waxay dumiso mooyee!!!!´

.My next article, I will inshala talk about more on what ways and tactics we use to end tribalism

It is amazing how one can be decieved by fallacious reasoning. The writer supports the separation of what he calls Somaliland (sic.) and dividing of the Somali people into tribal enclaves while breaching us about the bad effects of tribalism. As the Arabic saying goes, it is appropriate to say to this individual ” O breacher, breach thyself first.”

Also, while the Quran teaches that Muslims should unite and avoid disunity and disharmony, we have men like Sheikh Siiro who breaches about why Somaliland can never and will necer reunite with Somalia wagging his finger as though he is quoting from Sahih Al-Bukhari.

Let us get real; a Somali will live as a tribalist and will die as a tribalist.

    • Allemagan says:

      preah and preaching that is…

    • Ahmedyasin says:

Your comment shows how much hatred you guys from Somalia have towards somaliland.
This article was entirely for us somalilanders and how we can put drastic measures about tribalism, if there was any
Secondly, I don't really understand why you lot want unification after all the destruction to Somaliland by national Somali forces and the bombardment of the cities which claimed more than hundred of thousand of Somaliland people. It was somaliland who came to Somalia for unification, we were recognised by 50 countries when we threw everything for the sake of greater Somalia. Our aim was to create what used to be known as the Republic of Somalia, tens of thousands of Somalilanders were murdered by Somali Army officers. Bodies are still found today, bound together, and buried in mass graves, with bullets through the backs of their heads. Over 40,000 men women and children were murdered in the capital city of Hargeysa when government MiG jets bombed the city. My friend after that dreadful union, who would want to rejoin With you again???????? . The people of Somaliland will not ever again unite until the doomsday, so forget us and get on with your life's. Put your own house in order before you point the finger to Somaliland.

We have achieved a lot since we divorced you , in fact four elected governments have replaced each other democratically and you are criticising us.
Tribalism is what is killing Somalia, tribalism is the failure of 16 difference reconciliations over the past 22 years
      .

Sort out your tribalism problems between yourselves, reconcile between yourselves and then you can comment and intervene other people's affairs

Hi, Allemagn I totality agree with you.Isn't mazing the person who was breaching how bad it is to be teribalism nattion, now are talking hatred among of other. My advise is first start yourself because what you dont have, you cant give others. Become a person who has a clear heart among others. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” by Martin Luther King

  2. Hargaisaawi says:

It has always been difficult to reason with people who are religiously empty, morally corrupt and culturally empty. Just as it was back in the days when they could not face the fire from the SNM and they used to resort to abusing women and children, they started to bad mouth women. I would not say any bad things about the beautiful Somali women in Boosaso or in elsewhere but it shows how low life these mother fockers are. I am glad y my fellow Somalilanders did not respond to them. Let them reply to each other.

  3. HAWIYE WARRIOR says:

This myth of Daroods/Isaaqs being full blooded Arabs is nothing more but a myth.

Did people come and settle in Somali territories like the Jeberti yes but they all
got absorbed by the majority indigenous Somalis living there.

This prove is we've never had Arab or Persian as our main language either in the past or present
and neither will in the future.

    • Buuxiye says:

It is way past worrying about where any clan comes from!

hawiye have ONE simple task and that is to ensure they do not ever ever ever again become the SLAVES of Desert dwelling Cheaparty/Jebarti.

Jubbaland belongs to Bimyomaal, Sheikhal, Ajuuran, Bajuuni, D&M and any who ever else wishes to live there in peace. Ogadeen and Mr were transported along with some Harti to Jubbaland during Siyaads Kacaan era from Kilil-5 in Ethiopia. Ahmed Madoobe was born in Ethiopia, Mohamed Abdi Mohamed (Gandhi) was born in Kenya. Maybe hassan Mahamoud is blind these people do not even belong in Somalia yet they claim entire regions so as to divide it from Somalia or at the very least use the region like Puntland as a form of lever to extort funds and demand greater political representation?

I would rather dismantle the existing puntland instead of encouraging yet another one to form… They will simply sandwich Hawiye from north to south and cut them off from the rest of the African Continent.

Alarm Bells should be ring right about now… SAY NO to FOREIGNERS

Hawiye should refuse to accept any borders drawn up during the Kacaan years. Kacaan were very clever they ensured they settle their Jeberti folks where ever there was fertile land and prospect of mineral wealth… All Land gained by Jebarti after 1960 should be repatriated. Darood were a Minority in Jubba valley and this must become the future prospects of the region.

Otherwise you might as well go and prepare the whip your future master will need to drive you like the Donkeys that you have a tendency of being!

      • HAWIYE WARRIOR says:

First of all do you believe that your an Arab ? second Somalia is like what Jews is to Israel for
other Somalis third what we suppose to do if these so called majority are not fighting for their rights
but instead the Daroods are there's a saying you cant be helped if you don't help yourself first.

Oh and don't worry we are more than capable to defend and then finish with a counter strike are you
forgetting the habashi's that came with 50000 soldiers only to be chased out with less than
half of their soldiers. We the Hawiye if needed be can take on every Somali clan put together in one basket.

Why do you always talk BS we gave you your freedom not your SNM they were literally getting slaughtered by Siad Barre till we came in to the rescue don't ever forget that ?

        • HAWIYE WARRIOR says:

and we don't need to dismantle Puntland its doing it all by itself if your
up to date with with whats going on in that region

      • ali ahmed says:

MR diluted, first of all don't call hawiye slaves it looks your your confuse emotional creature needs medication.hawiye They never been to slave to anyone.darood They are major tribe unlike isaq minority.

JUBBALAND issue it's simple and square MAJORITY will take The lead other smaller tribes will live peace in This region ,it's all crap ogadeen and mareexan + harti was transported in jubbaland by barre regime only insane person run out medication speaks This way. These tribes lived This region for more Than two hundred years most of kismayo CBD own build by These tribes.your stupidity is creasing by The day,did know while attacking These two leaders Madoobe and Gandhi most somali leaders were not born inside somali territory including somaliland regional leaders Tuur, cigaal both born kilil-5 This shows how little knowledge you have.

Dismanteling PUNTLAND STATE OF SOMALIA it's like touching The sky,how do you Dismantle MORNARCHY That existed since 1800's while you were savage nomad.

Hawiye have regions and will remain Their own territory They can't pass ONE INCH beyond That or will face The full force of darood.

Your brain is twisted confuse emotional unbalance unstable,IT'S TIME FOR OVER DUE CHECK UP.

        isaq habashi should be deported.

  4. Reporter says:

First of all I would like to thank the author of this article, and second let me say that Somaliland gave a golden chance to unify with Somalia enthusiastically but unfortunately, the marriage turned into a nightmare,in my opinion Somaliland will not risk again, so what is the solution? the solution is to live peacefully as a neighbours.

  5. Fatima abdi goleh says:

I am very proud of having a wonderful British mother and somali father my roots and love for England my home, I followed my fathers roots from south and north it has humbled me working in un in Somalia and somaliland before and after the war I hope when I write my book being of mixed parentage and self taught speaking Somali which was vital for a better understanding of Somali people and their hardships, and the
diaspora in north and south Govt not doing
enough I have seen orphans suffering and mid management monies and food should be
monitored in many fields of action and furthermore the outer area of the north such as Odweyne and erigavo and burco outer regions. As far as tribalism is concerned in history it was the who’s who amberjack but it has been taken to far in it’s context in my opinion it is not a culture in a way hinderance.
