HARGEISA (Somalilandpress) — Tens of thousands of opposition Kulmiye Party supporters gathered in Freedom Park in Hargeisa on Friday as the nation’s election campaigns officially begin ahead of the June 26 presidential elections.

The mass gathering was organised by Kulmiye leaders Mr Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud (Silanyo) and his Vice-Chairman Mr Musa Bihi Abdi. The rally was aimed at sending a message to the government and the voters in the unrecognized republic.

The Kulmiye party leaders said this was clear message to the Rayale regime that the people reject their corruptions, incompetence, looting of public assets and disregard for the country’s laws and constitution.

The gathering was addressed by Mr Ahmed Silanyo, Chairman and presidential candidate, Abdul-Aziz Samaale, the first deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Mohamed Abdi Gaboose, Kulmiye Party campaign manager (Western regions), Mr Musa Bihi Abdi, Vice-Chairman of Kulmiye and other senior party members.

The speakers also outlined a broad overview of the party’s policy agenda. They said their party was ready to work with all sectors of the economy and local communities to build a Somaliland which is united, free and prosperous.

This was the largest rally by the opposition since it’s establishment in December 2002.

The party showed similar force throughout the country including the home town of the president Borama.

Many of Kulmiye supporters painted their homes and cars Kulmiye’s gold and green colours while thousands more wore the party’s flag,  shirts, scarfs and caps. kulmiyee Somalilands opposition holds a major gathering in Hargeisa

Mr Silanyo finally called for calm, unity and asked the people not to engage in any thing that will threaten the peace and stability of Somaliland with the ruling party.  Mr Silanyo accused the government of trying to frighten voters with a warning about Kulmiye Party as violent party. “They (UDUB) use acts of ‘scare tactics’ to betray us as violent and chaotic party but I can assure you that there will not be any violence despite them trying to provoke us, I urge you all to remain calm and to protect the peace during the election process,” he said.

Somaliland will go to the polling stations on June 26th in a historical election which will see the first time the nation will use biometric cards and other new technologies. The voters will vote for one of the three political parties; UDUB (Unity, Democracy and Independence) Party, Kulmiye (Peace, Unity, and Development) Party and UCID (Justice and Development) Party.

critically analysing the people attended the rallies are 80% school children (as can be seen on the pictures) and the opposition party offered them free buses(may allah reward janah one children dead for accident). second less people attended the demonstrations except burco city which the opposition party has significant number of supporters, but reported smaller crowds for cities like Erigavo, Lasanod, Odweyne, Berbera, Gabiley, Borama and Zaila.

Critically analyzing most registered voters are urban population – the total is 1.5 not 3.5 million-, and since kulmiye holds the two largest urban centers that together hold more than half of the population, the odds look quite with them.

Why is the major Somaliland news media is not bringing the three Somaliland presidential candidates for a debate or two and tell the people where each of them stands on important issues that this unrecognized country is facing? What is the Somaliland media doing to inform the mass about the issues and the program each candidate is planning to do for next five years if elected? I don't know why these important issues is not been discussed?

I agree i've been wondering that for quite sometime now. It would've been nice if they can bring the 3 leaders and let them debate or talk to inform us what they are going to do……

SomalilandPress should do a sit down with each one of the political leader so that they can differentiate each other from one another. I reall y would like to see where each one stands before I give my vote to them.

    • Qalinle2010 says:

Somalilandpress will not be able to sit down with all three candidates at the moment as we have other priories that we need to get it right before we take up such responsibility however it's open for other Somaliland media houses.

You will very soon see new Somalilandpress and more powerful and robust website.

We do have good contacts with all three parties however the timing for such is not right now but we do have plans to broadcast them live in the future.

All you suggestions, ideas, feedback and criticism are welcome before we rearrange Somalilandpress (SP).

The People of somaliland are aware of Silanyo's management as well as Riyale's management they recently requiring new blood, new brain, progressive brain.

Yes change will come in the form of Kulmiye Isha Alaaah. We're very much aware of "Silanyo's mangement" through his leadership in the SNM and we the people will entrust him once again to lead us and clean up Riyaale's mess!

Somaliland needs an experienced leader with a statesmanship qualities that Somalies across all walks of life respect and will listen to. We need someone like Mr. Silanyo, educated and experienced enough to put our point across instead of inexperienced unguided missile that will say whatever comes to his mind!…Don't get me wrong I Like Mr. Faysal Warabe, but he's not the right man for Somaliland at this time!!.
