We live in a dangerous, unpredictable and volatile world. The diplomatic relations between countries cannot always be taken for granted. Due to economic, strategic or security reasons the existing relationships between two countries may change or worsen at any time. Therefore, in this ever-changing geo-political issue as well as global economic and security challenges, to keep pace with the diplomatic relevant matters in the region and beyond, a broad-minded, flexible, well-structured, coherent and solid Foreign Policy with daring and courage ambition is of a paramount importance and vital for a young and yet recognition seeking country, like Somaliland Republic.
For nearly two decades, from 1991 until the appointment of the government of President Ahmed Silaanyo, Somaliland Republic has conducted a monotonous, cautious and one-dimensional foreign policy, a sort of a Cage Policy. The primary objectives of this policy laid mainly on digging out and telling to the outside world the historical facts and committed atrocities and all the brutal acts that the population of Somaliland have suffered at the hands of the former regime of Somalia in one hand.
On the other hand the foreign policy pursued for the last two decades had repeatedly emphasised the known facts and the painful experiences that the people of Somaliland had not only rendered the greatest contribution to the independence struggle, but for the sake of Somali Unity, surrendered everything they cherished the most, including the hard-won freedom and sovereignty on June 26th 1960. However, this policy has neither materialized nor led to the desired results. Somaliland Republic is still vainly in search of recognition. The Statehood of Somaliland is only and only complete when Somaliland is recognized by the world community as a full member of the global community.
In the contemporary diplomatic relations preparedness, vigilance and effective involvement are essential. You must ensure that you are never being absent in international matters or meetings in which are discussed issues that concern you. Never let others speak on your behalf. Because, missed opportunities never turn back. The Foreign Policy is a policy that needs continuous development, updating and adjustment. You cannot complacently be idle on the results that you have achieved in the past. Knowing the fact that in the past achieved result gives no assurance whatsoever in the future. That is why the “Cage Policy” of the past is no more applicable at this time.
In the spirit of President Ahmed Silaanyo’s electoral promises:
One of the most remarkable and striking changes implemented by the Government of President Ahmed Silaanyo is the way in which his government operates and performs on the field of Foreign Policy and International Co-operations. With limited resources, manpower and tight budget, the Foreign Policy department has delivered an incredible achievement which silenced permanently all the hate mongers, pessimistic voices and misconceptions propagated by Somaliland’s antagonists.
The recent Foreign Policy engagement and involvement of Somaliland government on regional and international political arena is an encouraging and promising sign for the realization of the long cherished dream of every Somaliland citizen: Recognition of Somaliland Republic as an independent state in the midst of global community. The way in which the foreign affairs department manifested and its courageous approach is a real testament in the spirit of President Ahmed Silaanyo’s electoral promises to put Somaliland’s recognition case in place as a plea for global understanding with international dimension.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Somaliland has unquestionably succeeded to reshape and revitalize Somaliland’s Foreign Policies. Some ill-informed opposition politicians, self-styled ‘political analysts’ as well as those failed and incompetent ex-officials of Somaliland government branded the Minister’s actions at all controversial and misleading. The facts really do speak for themselves. It is evidenced perfectly by the marvellous results and the rewarding outcomes on the field of foreign policy and international cooperation, that moment alone has justified it.
The way in which the Minister has influenced the Somaliland’s foreign policy is indeed a flash of the kind of cunning, quality and brilliance of diplomatic skills that we are unused to witnessing from any other Somaliland’s previous foreign affairs Ministers.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation is a skilled and brilliant top diplomat who is armed with common sense of doing diplomatic business. By right decision at the right time, by convenient approach and pre-emptive actions he avoids in advance any surprise or diplomatic failures. He is someone with a profound vision and ground-breaking diplomatic propensity. He demonstrated a daring, dedicated and decisive Foreign Policy.
The current Somaliland’s foreign policy is equipped with a certain degree of self-confidence, tact, vision and initiative, leadership quality, will-power and belief. It is guided by a top diplomat with profound diplomatic insight and aspirations, with the force of personality that is needed when it comes to turning potential into something more real and sustaining. Somaliland’s Foreign Policy approach is a hopeful and encouraging sign for all peace and development loving Somaliland citizens, which is already resulted that our country makes overtures to the right direction.
The government of President Ahmed Silaanyo is resolutely determined to remain actively involved to all major diplomatic fronts without any compromise upon the sovereignty and integrity of Somaliland Republic. Constructive approaches, broad public consultation, breaking through the diplomatic barriers, reshaping the detached and cautious policy and what formerly was regarded as a social, political and diplomatic taboo are the hallmarks that make the current Somaliland foreign policy so distinctive and exceptional.
Finally, if once any realistic dialogue or rapprochement-(without compromising upon the sovereignty and integrity of Somaliland Republic)- between the Somaliland Republic and Somalia might have been branded as an oddity and peculiarity in the civilised world destined to end up in quarrel or controversy, the government of Somaliland Republic has undeniably proved that such negativity seems misplaced.
To those failed and incorrigible hate-monger figures and their cohorts, instead of seeking confrontation, recrimination and recurring despair attacks against the President of Somaliland and the government he leads, come up with a decent and civilized political eloquence and well measured intellectual and more constructive debates that can contribute to the advancement of our country’s interest.
May ALLAH (SXWT) protect the true and genuine patriot!

why dont somaliland be radical and do the following – import other ethnic groups into s/land (oromo, afar, tigre, saho) and get rid of anti-independence somalis in s/land (you know who lol); let english and arabic be the official languages and serve as a common communicator for different ethnic groups; change the name of country (i like the name targhuba kkkk) and change the symbols (flag, emblem, anthem)
i am now a targhubese citizen of somali ethnicity one of the five star points (somalians, targhubese, djiboutians, ethiopians and kenyans) hahahaha what you think
stubido.
you are living different planet or taking some sort of strong medication.
no you are a crazy man somalia is the most backward country and somaliland will never join them again
Oromo and Eritrians are soo much nicer than somali wayne folks. Not a bad idea give out free land and a few cattle. Get rid of those autistic mofos that sh yte is genetic!
Somalilanders will except nothing short of full separation. If that means Somalilanders have to fight again then so be it. It seems the drumming the south received last time didn't sink in the message. Why on earth would somalilanders doom themselves to a life or live in a country that is the whore of every country on earth? Wallahi SOmalis only understand the language of force and its force that they will meet if they step in Somaliland. You can send you Adoon masters from Uganda and kenya, we will finish what shaabab started.
There will be NO separation, there will be one country one flag one language Republic of Somalia, the people who dreaming for separation walaal keep dreaming for the last two decade for recognition you will be isolated if you keep doing what you doing. International community recognized one nation Republic of Somalia 1960, they respect sovereignty and independent of Somalia Republic nothing else. These who obsessed something that is not existing walaalyal forget that come to the table and negotiate for better and pride future for Somalia Republic.
xarago why are you so obsessed with somaliland what the IC thinks or recognizes is not important as the realty on the ground the majority of somaliland people in our pre 1960 and post 1991 borders (which are the same) support independence for the fact that unity with somalia will never work. no one even america can force somalilanders to give up its sovereignty and if you somalians don't get it through your thick headsthat we rejected you than im afraid the only solution is a genocidal type war
xarago You are the one who is dreaming and those failed and incorrigible hate-monger figures like you and their cohorts, instead of seeking confrontation, recrimination and recurring despair attacks against Somaliland diplomacy, come up with a decent and civilized political eloquence and well measured intellectual and more constructive debates that can contribute to the advancement of our country's interest. “Talks or no Talks our Sovereignty is neither for discussion nor Compromise" we stand shoulder to shoulder with our government. So aboowe go and send you mother $100 in Mogadishuuu.
P.S again a dumb diluted uneducated southerner who is grasping for air as if we (Somali lander) give toss what he thinks.
We need no sympathy from you guys, you've killed our children and our mothers mercylessly and in cold blood and i see no reason that you won't repeat the same if we drop our guard and retort back to foolishness. Let me assure you that we will never let our enemy fool us again in the name of somali unity. Never again, please your sympathy for your own people and stop killing your real brothers in the south, specially the minorities and the helpless children the whole world is watching you!
Somaliland thinks the independence will come from the international community and that is not true. we are not in the colonial rea anymore. now is the time of diplomacy. and somaliland failed to show the required foreign policy that would have granted her the independence. they have been shouting for the same demand for the last 21 years which is "we want out of this union". remember the death of Yugoslavia and how the solution came out in 4 years by recognising 6 independent states. this is due to the fact that Europe dont want any miss on it soil. but when it comes to africa they really dont care. somalilanders failed to understand this. Abdul Rahman Toor knew this and called for unity since the regime fall down which was the reason they formed SNM. but what was the result? he was exiled to Ethiopia.
silanyo must understand that the only way to freedom is through mogadisho. No other country in the world can do anthing for him and his Issaq based republic. I always wondered, there is people in somaliland who were fighting for syad bare regime and he fall down they forgave that tribe and they even made one of them president. so why dont they forgive southerns sense they have big heart. we all know where syad bare is from and that he killed anyone who stood against him( Majarteen, Abgal, Issaq).
somaliland running for independence is baseless that's why the whole world did not recognise somaliland. they have the right for compensation and the rebuilding of there state and bringing what is left of the bare regime to the ICC. but leaving the union is baseless. what is the difference between the independence and federalism? in both cases no one will intervene in ur issues.
Somaliland's independence exist. Recognition will come, whether it comes from Mogadishu, AU, EU, Arab World or China it doesn't really concern me. As long as it happens. You're wrong. Somaliland has presented it's case well, but we are always rejected why? Genocide, oppression. Mainly targeted the Isaaq people1970-1991. Fought for our freedom 1988-1991. We lost 250000 people. We were internationally recognized in 1960. So far the case looks strong. Somaliland decided on democracy. a role model for the rest of Africa. And if you go to Somaliland there are people of Somalia who have taken refuge from their war-torn homes. They live in poverty still which is sad, but they live in peace nonetheless, there are programs that allow their children regardless of clan to educate, get work skills.
A legitimate International body – who looks out for the well being of the people know that Africa is a corrupt, dying continent. And if u look at the way Somaliland is governed it is truly dubbed "the best kept secret in Africa" but I agree it isn't perfect and more improvement needs to be done.
Currently no international body wants to recognize Somaliland why? because a recognized Somaliland – would liberate African people everywhere. And Mugabe and other african puppets don't want that. I read an interesting article about Somali people and one line in particular it stated that "Somali people are naturally proud, building nation. It would not be a surprise if Somalis become a dominant player in the African continent if there was no war present."
I don't see why can't Somalis in the south look at different options available.
Somalia, Somaliland and Djibouti. Three Somali states reclaim our territories occupied by Ethiopia and Kenya. And work our way upwards..
@ Yassin well said bro they keep doing something is not existing, North Somalia come to the table and negotiate for better Somalia that is the solution.
It is the will of the people of Somali land not to go back to the union with Somalia. The international community knows that Somali land's resolve to abrogate that union is real and the only thing open to them is to facilitate a peaceful agreement between the two countries. In retrospect, the charter of the that union is not abiding because Somali land was not given the opportunity to study and sign it. The constitution, the union charter and all the other national documents were being deliberated within Somalia's parliament in which Somali land's representatives had no say. Now, if the negotiation fails with Somalia, Somali Land is forced to go to the UN to claim its sovereignty.
yassin… your conclusions are dumb and Knowledge less, the fact that you think we (somalilanders) should expect compensation from Somalia is far from the truth, mate give your own ppl that compensation who need it more then we do. Somaliland has rebuild it self with dignity and wisdom we are the daughters and son's of these hero's (SNM) who fought till death for the freedom that we are enjoying at this minute YES have lost so much but Allah has awakened us and gave us harts of gold to forgive and moved on but not FORGOTTEN there is a big different but i guess you are young and ignorant so i let you off this time but do some homework before opening that mouth of you again. Also the independent of Somaliland and their diplomacy is not for your discussion nor for anyone else but for Somalilanders ONLY.
Somalia is grasping for air and Somaliland is your ventilator as we speak maybe south Somalia should broaden their horizon and stop living under everyone's exceptions and do whats best for it's ppl.
P.S don't ever mention MY PRESIDENT NOR MY HERO'S (SNM) in you uneducated Somali mouth wen your sitting in your mummy house receiving my tax income.
haha no more so called somaliland,
All the sick, envious and cowardly enemies of Somaliland are crying. In fact they are worried and they know that they cannot do nothing except to watch in horror the diplomatic successes of Somaliland in the international diplomatic arena. Wake up from your bad dreams, we are a free nation in control of our destiny and vigilant to our enemy.
North Somalia there is many tribes who don't want separation and they made their choice clear so you can't force these people, Sl case of secession is not valid and it would not work because is not legitimate case. come to the table and negotiate otherwise you will be isolated, while South moving forward development attract investment economic boom inshaallah.
it takes a majority to make a decision (50%+) and in somaliland the isaak make up more than 60% in the former british protectorate somaliland claims its sovereignty AS A WHOLE so other clans have not much choice either accept the will of the majority and be involved in an inclusive prosperous future free from paranoia or alternatively leave where no one will lose sleep lool
