Somaliland: New Road Signs for Hargeisa –Berbera Highway Courtesy of Dahabshil Group

Dahabshil group of companies has donated traffic signs to notify motorists using the vital Hargeisa –Berbera highway of regulations, provide warning to potential hazards on or near the roadway, and provide needed guidance to destinations.

The road signs numbering more than 50 were handed to the Somaliland road Authority by the head of Public relations and Media Prof. Hassan Mohamed Jama A.K.A Hassan Heiss who said this is part of a pilot project by Dahabshil group to install road signs in all major highways in the country.

Nowadays, the rate of accidents in our roads have been increasing dramatically with many people losing their lives in what would have been preventable accidents, so we at Dahabshil group decided that it was our corporate responsibility to provide the crucial road signs to be posted along the road can provide you with the information you need to practice safe driving skills. Remember to pay attention to road signs; they could save your life, said Prof Hassan Heiss.

Efficiency is another important factor in road signs. Signs ensure cars move at the correct speed and in the correct direction to keep traffic flowing uniformly. As with any sign, road signs are intended to provide you with knowledge. In most cases, these signs are for your safety. They tell you things such as which way you can go on a road or what speed you can drive on the major highways. However, the most important signs you will see on the road are safety ones which warn you of dangerous road conditions, said Prof Hassan Heiss.

The Head of regional development at Dahabshil group Mr. Abdurrahman Ali Haji Hassan speaking during the handover of the road signs in the town of haleeya, said this isn’t the first time we have provide this signs in fact we had donated similar signs back in the nineties but have since disappeared for sight due to lack of maintenances.

Mr. Abdurrahman urged Public agencies that have been tasked with installing traffic signs also have the responsibility to maintain them through the life of the sign. Public agency should devote resources to retain the visibility and legibility of traffic signs, as well as ensuring that signs remain properly mounted and in good working condition. The Deputy Director of Somaliland Road Authority, Eng. Hussein Abdi Ali thanked Dahabshil Group for their generosity, he added that the Road signs will give out a number of messages regarding the road and what you as a driver should expect on the road.

Therefore, if followed properly, road signs help maintain discipline on the road. Road signs are placed in a manner that makes them visible to the driver from a distance. This helps drivers consider the condition of the road ahead as described by the sign; they may need to change their speed accordingly, added Eng. Hussein Abdi Ali. Road signs need to be placed at a considerable distance from one another.

In this way the driver will not be confused and this will prevent misunderstanding and accidents occurring. Road signs come in different shapes and colours, where each stands for a particular message. This makes it possible to Recognizing and knowing road signs are part of the legal criteria for getting a driver’s license and are the key component in a driving theory test, said Eng. Hussein Abdi Ali.

    The ever attention hungry and damaged Dhiigshiil has mastered the game of manipulating the hardcore separatists in small regions of the north. They know even if they "donate" one plastic bag they will get a handshake even from their "President" and his entire Diaspora and one subclan cabinet.

    One sign is worth $2 and if you buy them in bulk even less we talking about in the cents. Besides the Berbera-Hargeisa road is no highway by no mean and is just a regular road that was left behind by Siad Bare regime and now it is in desperate condition.

    There are kids all over the road standing there with shovels filling up the holes….while Silaanyo and his Dhiigshiil funded militia stay inside the House of General Hersi Morgan.

    These signs will not do anything because the actual road has fallen apart, see how the separatists think?

    They want to put up few signs (only 50 signs in a 250-km road) in a road that got washed away and almost disappeared. It is like putting a new door on the sank Titanic while still under the ocean. How they think just amazes me.

    They donated 50 signs that can't even reach Hamdi Hotel and they making it like they went to the moon. They dream small, accept anything, ask for nothing more, desire for no more, are not highly driven…the whole place is one giant NGO camp and Dhiigshiil…even the "government" is Dhiigshiil and Hersi Gaab is the agent while Silaanyo is the shareholder, who by the way built Dhiigshiil using money donated to SNM in the 80s and 90s.

    Dhiigshiil calls all the media every time it donates one grain of rice and takes photos of Heis with poor and dying people and they use that as a propaganda tool. They should be ashamed of themselves. They also abuse the media and send countless threats and blackmails.

    The reason they use every opportunity as propaganda is because so many people do not like them and the media reports all their dark side so they try to counter that with silly pictures of Heis like this.

    If they don't stop the tribal war in north Somalia and employing of Islamic extremists like Hersi Gaab and his al Shabab—they might be shut down for good like Al Barakat, they not bigger than al barakat was so they are no immune. Be warned.

    Here are some solutions:

    1. Fix a speed limiter on all Khat delivery trucks and all HGV's, in the UK this is 56 mph. In Hargeisa these guys drive dangerously and are responsible for many accidents, I myself had a close call with a Khat lorry on the Hargeisa to Berbera road. A speed limiter is a used to limit the top speed of a vehicle, this would be a legal requirement and the responsibility of the owner.

    2. Make it illegal to drive without a seatbelt. Whilst I was in Hargeisa, not only did people not wear seatbelts, but they also found it odd that I chose to. People walking down the street would shout the occasionally comment such as ''warya maxaad iska doobdoobaysa'' (spelling?)

    3. Get the traffic police to fine people who drive around with broken or missing side mirrors, tail lights, break lights, not wearing a belt etc. In Hargeisa the traffic police always stop you to ask for money, but at least this way they would earn that money or it could contribute to maintaining the roads.

    It's not rocket science, where there's a will there's a way – we just don't have the will.

    Why dont they fix the roads instead of donating signs. Those signs are useless if the drivers dont abide by it and there are no law to enforce it.
