Somaliland warns against outside interference in Taleeh Conference

LAS ANOD — Somaliland’s Minister of Interior, Mohamed Nuur Arale, warned on Sunday against outside interference and the meddling of its internal affairs including the tribal conference in Taleeh, Sool region.
“Somaliland is known for its peace stance, tranquility and cohesion. Even though it has transformed from a clan-based system to a multiparty democracy, we want to make it clear that the government supports any and all tribal gatherings in the country,” he said while speaking to BBC-Somali Services. But reiterated that “meetings should be devoted to addressing and promoting peace, reconciliations, consultations and development policies”.
The remarks are seen as a warning to Somali politicians from neighboring Somalia and few pro-Union individuals from the Diaspora who are said to be attending the meeting. He said they will be held accountable if they hijack the Dhulbahante-clan conference dubbed Khatuumo Two.
The minister made it clear that the government was ready to protect its judicial sovereignty and there was no compromising on that. “Regarding security disturbances in Sool, the government will be strict in guaranteeing public order and the sovereignty of the Republic of Somaliland,” he said.
He further called upon politicians from Sool province who are taking part in the Taleeh gathering to refrain from any act that will destabilize the region.
Mr. Arale said loud and clear that his government will not tolerate any opportunists to disrupt the meeting and instigate violence between tribes in the region.
“We do not have security forces guarding the conference but they stand ready just outside town to respond immediately should opportunist individuals disrupt the meeting and try to harm our tranquility” he noted.
The Taleeh conference raised some eyebrows in Hargeisa since members of the brutal clan militant accused of having ties with al-shabab, known as SSC, were invited. It is a Somaliland customary for the government and its forces not to interfere in tribal meetings.
The Somaliland army and the SSC tribal militia clashed a number of times in Sool region. The group ceased its violent attacks after their extremist leader, Mr. Suleman Ahmed, was detained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in April 2011. Short period later the group collapsed after its financiers, mainly based in Ohio and Minnesota, discovered the FBI was cracking down on terror financiers. The FBI learnt how groups based in the mentioned cities were chaneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to violent groups such as SSC and al-Shabaab. This led to U.S. banks to stop handling wire transfer services known as hawalas to Somalia. More recently, Sunrise Community Banks, a group of independently managed banks that include Franklin Bank, acted similarly. Somalia protested the decision saying many people rely on monthly remittance for survival.

Just curious, Why is it that the Ethiopian authority who were so concerned with the existence of terror group Alshabab, decide to welcome the supporters of this group the (SSC) to Ethiopia and help them fly to Somaliland border and secured the ongoing clan oriented meeting? What is in it for Ethiopia?
How can this help the relationship between Ethiopia and Somaliland?

The word 'tribe' is not another term for religion.
If Ethiopia is working with SSC and plans to create a new SSC state then Somaliland is in big trouble. That would only prove that Ethiopia has no interest of good neighbor with Somaliland and therefore we should not allow them to use Berbera port.
Ethiopia will not do that because they know we are not divided like the Southerners. If they support repels in our country, nothing will stop Somaliland from giving bases and arms to all of Ethiopia's enemies. A fight with Somaliland is simply not in Ethiopia's interest and they know that.
Ethiopia's interest lays in divided Somalia so does Somaliland, Somaliland is against the ONLF gorillas with the dreadlocks so is Ethiopia, Ethiopia needs Berbera, Somaliland needs Ethiopia's support against ONLF, al shabab, TFG, SSC and other rebels who all want to destroy the region in the name of greater Somalia which will never come into being.
It is Ethiopia's and Somaliland's moral duty and survival to keep those threats minimal and control them.
Ethiopia will never send army for little uneducated tribe with no town or settlement just dancing semi-naked around a tomb…we killed mad mullah supporters together and today we will do it all over again.
Explain to me why the "freedom" loving people of Somaliland would not want to see their oppressed brothers in Western Somalia to be free from the brutal occupying force that is Ethiopia? How exactly does the human misery that is being perpetuated by Ethiopia a favorable outcome for the "human rights" loving people of Somaliland?
This Taleeh Conference should not poise any threats to the Somaliland national security.
The newly SLD Registered SSCD Party is from the Dhulbahante SSC areas and the party Chiefs
are believed to be participants of the Taleeh Conference and the SLD Govt. are monitoring the
Conference's deliberations, specially the activities of the diaspora delegation headed by
DR. Ali Khalif Galaydh and any ssc milita. It might be recalled that DR. Galaydh was a party to
the reconciliation agreements between all the Somaliland clans which took place in the Borama
Awdal province in 1993. Although DR. Galaydh was a one time PM of the Somalia Arte Dkmg
which failed and collapsed, he has since been in the US. and has nothing to do with the inception
of the TFG afterwards. Since both Somalia and Puntland are in deep crisis, let's see what are
real intentions of DR. Galaydh in the Taleeh Conference.

Dr Galaydh is long term ally of Silanyo and he is trying to impress the old man at all cost. He is the one who destroyed the SSC militia not the FBI. I have seen all their email exchanges. Within these dhulos there is more than five different groups, Suleiman Ahmed is gone and Galaydh who is pro-Somaliland, also met with Somaliland foreign minister in London, is heading this conference.
He will become the governor of the region for Somaliland. The two big rival camps (Buhoodle and Sool dhulos) will finally come under Galaydh and they will taste peace.
If Galaydh believed in TFG or union, he would have gone to Mogadishu long time ago.
The Ethiopian claims are only wild dreams and propaganda spread by few elements just to get reaction. Somaliland and Ethiopia had relationship for over 300 years, nothing can and will damage that our visions for the region are same.
Maybe few Ogaden militants who share the Sayid Abdullah Hassan vision sneaked into Taleeh and if thats true they will be apprehended by Addis Ababa.
Hargeisa and Addis Ababa will bury any union movement that blindly follow the Sayid and his mafia group.
Focus on the real topic, Somaliland will destroy the group again.

First of all there are no reports on the Ethiopian forces trespassing into Taleex. This is only a cheap shot by pro-UDUB groups such as Waaheen who is still bitter over their Editors arrest. They only spewing venom just to ease some pain but its far from the truth. The SSC element is as dangerous to Somaliland as it is to Ethiopia. We are both nations who do not wish to entertain any group who believe in the fake "Somaliweyn" or greater Somalia agenda.

The news of the presence of Ethiopian troops in Taleex conference is not only carried in Waheen but is also is in the pages of news media including BakiPress and Taleex Times. Ethiopian troops accompanied Ali Khalif Galaydh's delegation to Taleex and the proceedings of Khaatumo 2 is being guarded by Ethiopian forces now as we debate this issue. If that is not the case, the local administrations of Puntland and Somaliland would have stormed and would have attempted to stop this peaceful gathering by violence and force as being suggested by some of the die-hard and crazy clan-loyalist’s comments in this page.
The fact that this meeting is taking place without the inclusion of the administrations of Puntland and Somaliland shows that neither of them rules Las Anod or can object to an Ethiopian project in those regions.
So what you are saying is that you accept Ethiopian rule over other Somali rules in that region? What a shame to you and to those who support this idea.
Mohamed Nuur Arale can only dance around the issue and can warn unknown foreign entities about interfering in Taleeh Conference since he cannot even mention the presence of Ethiopian troops in a land claimed by his administration. Let’s face it. Ethiopian armed forces are in Taleex as they are in Beletweyne today and there is nothing we can do about. Is there? And besides, if every tribe in Somalia wants to declare a state in their own little enclave, why can’t the people of Las Anod have one of their own?
I just contacted Taleh and they confirmed that there are atleast 50 heavilly armed New Police members from Jijiga but they're all of Daarood tribe of Somali decent.
So, basically they're in their own land and I don't think Silanyo wants to mess with them or thier President mudane ina iley.

I would believe you words dear brother if only they were true. However, the true intention behind the SSC rebellion has always been one motivated by hidden tribal ambitions plain and simple. There is no Somalinimo, wadinimo, or islaminimo in any of the words being shouted at any of the SSC rallies and websites. Despite most Isaaq and Harti sharing years of marriage ties you still refer to the Isaaq as the ENEMY or Caado. You have also tried to recruit the help the Puntland and the Ogaden on Darood tribal grounds to fight a war against the Isaaq.
You and the majority of the SSC (but not all like kayse) are full of it. Your only concern is tribal honor. Your only complaint is "HOW CAN WE LET ISAAQ RULE US" or "WE WANT MOGADISHU LIKE THE OLD DAYS WHEN DAROOD RULED THE COUNTRY"
Your minds are ALL small and that is why your areas are the least developed. If you were smart like Kayse and the SSCD you would have realized that in Somaliland if a smaller tribe like the Gadabursi can lead effectively for 8 years then surely both the Warsengali and Dhulbhante would some day sit in the presidents chair. The Dhulbhante people should be creating a pro-union party, join the political process and convenience their brothers about rejoining if UNITY is their true motivation. However, if Dhulbhante want to pursue a Sub-clan agenda and later claim regions inhabited by multiple tribes as their own or somehow drag other regional tribes into some xamar style conflict well you know what will happen.
We keep massaging your heads and pleading with you as brothers should and you keep calling us every name in the book while calling on regional tribes to fight us. So let me be crystal clear so as both you and your relatives aren't confused about the reaction will you receive if you push for war once more.
Even if you were to drag the sayid from his grave and declare him your leader, even if you were to enlist the help and aid of all other Darood tribes big and small, even if you were even bring the old Somali national army with Sayid Baree at it's head WE WOULD DEFEAT YOU ONCE MORE.
If the Dhulbhante play the tribal "We are Darood" card then the Isaaq will eagerly put Somaliland on hold and pay you back from the hundreds of thousands deaths and destruction your tribe has brought down on us many fold. You will have no where to run, hide and this 3 steady meals for SSC prisoners will stop and funerals will be the only thing the Dhulbhante look forward to day in and day out.

The minister is only putting in word what Somaliland was practising for the last twenty years. Basically, no tribe is forcibly brought under Somaliland administration. Each tribe was peacefully brought into the union by their elders and politicians. Even today all the Warsengali police are probably receiving two salaries, one from Somaliland and the other from Puntland. Few Somaliland politicians go beyond Ceergaabo for security reasons. If Somaliland's policy was to control our borders by force then Sool and eastern Sanaag would have been the most violent places in Somaliland for the last two decades. Personally, I have serious misgivings about the whole Somaliland policy towards the Harti tribes. So far, our governments’ past and present policy is to lure the elders and leaders of these tribes with wealth and power in order to buy the loyalty of the ordinary Harti tribesmen. This results in so much of our meagre resources being wasted to fund this unethical practice. All that money could be spend our desperately poor people. Continued below…..

I believe the best thing our government should do is to conduct a free and fair referendum among the Harti people to give them the choice to decide their destiny. We should then respect whatever choice they make, whether it is remain in Somalia or to be a separate country of their own. It should be up to them. Somaliland will only prosper when it have fewer problems to deal with.

I think I will fully support Somali-land over any other administration in Somalia if we STOP this Somali-diid idea. Also, this seperation will eventually harm the idea of Somali-land. So, I hope one of the outcomes of Khaatumo2 in Taleex will be to re-negotiate with Somali-Land. There is no hate between Isaqs and Dhulbahantes. There have clashes based on resources/animals etc.. All of us have a responsibility to keep the peace, work towards mutual interests and sound/fair political decisions. NO NEED to keep men like Xabsade in Hargeys when can meet two dhulbahante people over the issues of sool. Plus don't forget that the Somali-Land is only present in lasanod and two other town along the main paved Somali ROAD..

I have a cousin she is isaaq and her mother was dhulbahante you know what they told her mother when she was running from the faqash to save her Isaaq children, her family turned her back and told her that if she came back with those isaaq children she would be dead and her children with her. @Darwish, apology accepted. That man is great, who acknowledges vain talk or a slip of the tongue. We Somalis are sometimes the brightest pple on earth and yet we are also sometimes the dumbest pple. This is clearly evident from our actions, a good example is killing one another on clan lines without no apparent reason.
We should remember what Allah told us in the Holly Qur'an that….God created us from a pair of male and female and made us into nations and tribes and that the best in the sight of Allah is the most pious of us…. Allah did not say rer hebel are superior than rer hebel, or this nation is greater than the other nation etc.
If the Dhulbahantes want to govern themselves, so let it be. We should not focus on ourselves and instead put all our efforts at how best we can improve our well-being.
You know what, we cannot blame each other at the end of the day, we are come from a pastoral background and as nature dictates we tend to solve our problems with a nomadic reasoning void of any common sense.

Last point, Ethiopia is our neighbour, we should not dwell on what they do or don't do if we are claiming any sovereignty. Addis Ababa is free to meet, visit or even sleep wherever it wants, same with Hargeisa, Mogadishu and even Las Anod in that matter.
We have a long history with Ethiopia, many of which were bad than good, but given that we are in the 21st century and no man is an island we should not play into the Ethiopian game of divide and rule. If each one of us sticks to his own challenges in his locality, Addis Ababa will have no Chessboard to use us as pawns in this primitive, dirty and bloody politics in the Horn.
