HARGEISA(SomalilandPress)–Somaliland Vice President Abdirahman Abdilahi Ismael (Saylici), today welcomed United Nations Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Political Office for Somalia and Somaliland, Augutine Mahiga who arrived in the city on Saturday for talks with the Government.

Part of the talks between VP Saylici and Mr. Mahiga involved ways that Somaliland could avoid the problems that are facing the Old Somalia in the South. These included but were not limited to actions that can be taken to safe guard against the drought that is ravaging the south and the ensuing famine. They also discussed security matters with emphasis on deterrence of terrorist acts and piracy and the spread of armed extremist that might see the current situation in the South as a invitation to move their diabolical plans further North.

Mr. Mahiga was delighted by the warm welcome that he received on behalf of the President, Ahmad Mohamed Mohamoud (Silanyo), who is currently on his way to China for high-level talks with representatives of that government. He also passed on salutations from the Secretary General for the people of Somaliland and to Mr. Silanyo himself, who also happened to bump into him at the Independence Ceremony of South Sudan earlier last month. He congratulated the country and its people on the strides they have taken since unilaterally declaring independence from South Somalia in 1991 and on how good governance has moved Somaliland away from the violence and lawlessness that is plaguing the South. He then went onto business matters and stated that the aim of his trip to do fact-finding on the situation on the ground in Somaliland concerning the drought in the Horn of Africa.

Mahiga stated that East Africa is being ravaged by the worst drought in over 60 years and because of that the international community has begun massive fund raising drives so as to alleviate the burden on the governments in the Horn. He concluded that the effects of this drought have in fact reached Somaliland but that because of the stabile political and security situation the worst hasn’t touched the people of Somaliland.
The Vice President followed up by stating that Somaliland has felt the effects of the drought, be it the acute water shortage that has been effecting some parts of the country, to the loss of live stock by the nomadic herders, to the profiteers that have raised prices on commodities so as to take advantage of the drought and also the Holy month of Ramadan. Since the resources of the Government are limited he appealed for co-operation in these fields from the international community. He concluded that the situation on the ground can change drastically and that if steps are not taken to stem these problems in Somaliland they could in theory deteriorate to the point of South Somalia’s situation.

This guy is a slimy and slippery character, and not to be trusted. He is a chameleon presenting a different face to every person. But he is on a mission – destroying Somaliland.

It is high time that our media should have been alert to this danger.

I would like to know ^the real reason^(Augutine Mahiga) came to somaliland. This guy has done nothing for somaliland and he others r the reason that south somalia is a mess. So the people of SOMALILAND should ask him his real intentions for his visit. Some say he visit is about encouraging Somaliland to join Somalia in siyasaad ways -.

  3. Mohamd says:

Good, he should be stood up and never allowed to sit in an opulent manner. Just as he abandons Somalis in SL, his poxy little visits should be ignored since there is no partnership between the Somalia he represents and SL. Welcoming him officially is disastrous, because it is like welcoming Somalia president.

We do know this guy Mahiga, is no good for Somalia or Somaliland, he want's the status quo in both countries to remain the way it is now. It is to his advantage and his office to keep both countries under the UN office control.

Do you know today Somalia is ruled not from Mogadishu but Nairobi and Addis Abeba?
As a Somalilander I personally will not buy anything coming out of the mouth of this guys from UN.

One thing is for sure, whether UN like it or not Somaliland is here to stay forever.

But at the same time this shows how SOMALILAND has grown and is becoming a major player in the region. He himself(UN) see that and knows somaliland cant be ignored no more..

It is in our culture to be generous and courteous to our guests, so let Mahiga enjoy our hospitality, other than that Somaliland's political position with regard to our secession and sovereignty is solid, sacred and not negotiable by any means or influences.
Mahiga could bring and put on the table any proposal he deems fit , but the will of our leaders will always prevail and that is what counts.

Mahiga is UN employee who like to see Somalis in general suffering and he want to bring he evil plan to Somaliland. He want dictate his mission to SL leaders for the exchange of the UN hand outs. Better chase him out of Somaliland.

  9. Kayse says:

Somaliland needs to keep Mr Mahiga away. He is upto no good and no one in Somaliland or even Somalia trusts him. He was the very man who assisinated the last Prime Minister and his government in Mogadishu.

He also spreads mistrust amongst the Somali various leaders, he takes some BS story from Mogadishu and brings it to Hargeisa, he takes some BS from Hargeisa and feeds to Garowe.

He thinks we Somalis don't see that. Next time Somaliland government has to turn its back on him.

He has very sinister agenda to destroy the entire Somali population, this man has been making plans for Somalis since 1970s…he is old and evil.

If Somaliland wants to progress it has to deport Mahiga and his team.

I am disappointed at this week gesure by Vice President Saylaci…he should not have met with him. Mahiga has not done a thing and he is on Somalia's payroll (Debt)…no UN pays for his wages, its coming off Somalia. Those guys in Somalia have no mind so we have to help them where we can.

The UN needs to know Mahiga does not represent us and we hope he never returns.

Saylaci you let us down today by meeting with this warlord.

  11. Khalid says:

Mahiga is in Somali soil and Hargeisa is no different than Mogadishu in the eyes of the UN, This gentle man is just employee of the United Nations and he is not to be blamed for anything. He is in Hargeisa to have talks with the administration of how to prevent drought simple, Mahiga is not there to interfere with Somaliland affairs, The matter is Somali problem.

  13. Saleebaan Xaaji says:

Khalid, you are lost just like Mahiga. Hargeisa is in Somaliland. The UN political office has always been a lame place, other agencies do some good, but the political office is a nest of vipers. Look at East Timor, as soon as they got their independence from Indonesia, they kicked the UN political office out of their country, but they continue to deal with other UN agencies, Southern Sudan will do the same. The various UN political offices around the globe are the most useless departments in the whole of the UN, which to be honest is toothless as a political entity.

  14. Togdheerboy says:

This wicked Mahiga has no value to us. He couldnt influence and change the minds of our President and Dr. Omer.
Now that they are away on their visit to China he is planning to munipilate the Vice President.
Let the bastard know that we are not fools like those in…………

I am fed up why Somaliland leaders never express their Point.
Hargeysawi in London, and Kayse Pls. wake up….

  15. Jirdeh says:

Mahiga is the messenger of the United Nations and all we are interested in is the message he delivers which if found not in our favor will automatically be rejected. It would be against the diplomatic etiquette and would reflect badly on us if we snub him. We must be cordial to him, but send him back to the United nations with our firm and final message and the appropriate reply. Remember that he is simply a messenger and the UN is the party we are dealing with.

     Reply
  16. Boqoljire says:

Well said Mr. Jirdeh. I believe we have already told our position and as you said, we should deal with him diplomatically and reject out right if he brings anything we don't like it. He is an envoy from UN and nothing else.

By the way, who the Somali blond who is always with him?

  17. I Jama says:

The UN messengers such as Mahiga are all about image. The reason he is in SL is to show a face to Somalis that he is linking all the different Somali nations and keeping them involved with each other. This image is of course for the pro unionist more then it is for the Somalilanders. Somalilanders are ignoring him for the sake of the South Somali's disastrous situation (interim tolerance). Somalis in the South are literally dying in the name of unity. The have no choice or they will be starved out or abused or displaced until they give in or find a solution without TFG. Subxaana Allah.

Don't lose your mind over one individual who visited Hargeisa, Somalia. I say Somalia bc there is no a country called Somaliland. The UN will never recognize one tribe as a country and the nationalists will not allow this to happen. Look at the end of the day Hargiasa would have to come back to the union with force or peaceful way. I am happen in a peaceful way, bc i am not advocating for a bloodshed.

If Mahiga has a solution he would fix up his own Tanzania, sure its not at war like Somalia but its dying under the radar and if you didnt know here is news for you. Tanzania is basically owned by the UN, World Bank, IMF and the Anglo-Saxons. Mahiga is no different…we in Somaliland will next time take to the streets if he returns again…we do not care about UN or Mahiga unless they do their job right and respect our demands—Go back to Tanzania old man!

Tanzania is in the biggest debt, every dollar they hustle is snatched off them by the Anglo-Saxon organizations such as the so called IMF—all the people Mugabe chased from Zimbabwe are settled in Tanzania and provided with free land and farms.

They think we Somalis are not aware. UN has to replace him and Somaliland gov has to respect our request for the sake of our nation—no more dealing with Mahiga.

He takes few pictures with Somali officials and calls the UN to rollout the cheques for himself.

  21. Abraham says:

Leave Mahiga alone, he is just doing his job. Our government has a duty to treat foreign dignitaries well. Its up to the Somalilanders either to be fooled by him like the Southerners or to outsmart him and show him that he is just a mere employee of the UN. I thing it will be the latter.

     Reply
  22. Ali Asad says:

Mahiga is simply an employee, instructed to perform a certain course of duty and he is doing his job. What is his job then? Not to leave any stone unturned to bring Somaliland back into the Union. Therefore, the reason Mr Mahiga is coming to Hargeisa is to do everything he can to persuade Somaliland Administration to be part and parcel of the union. That is the only message he is carrying, therefore, in this instance, he needs a strong and confident government to tell him off and say Mr Mahliga please hit the road and mind your own business.
