Somaliland Telecommunication: Understanding the Regional Undersea Cable Systems

August 22, 2010   ·   16 Comments

LONDON (Somalilandpress) — Somaliland is leading the way in the Telecommunication sector in the region but the lack of reliable and affordable connectivity with the rest of the world is impeding its potential growth.

This is also denying fast Internet connections for the thriving businesses, government departments and academic institutions which are at the heart of future developments of this
country and its people.

This brief report has been developed to demystify the undersea cable systems in operation in the region and how Somaliland can benefit by establishing affordable and long term connectivity with the international networks.

It also highlights the challenges ahead that the new Somaliland government will need to tackle head on and the opportunities that will need to be capitalised for the benefit of the country as a whole.

The so called Small Globe Solutions is as hoaxes as SomCable. They are all joke and want to confuse the people of Somaliland.

No website no business number means you dont exist.

Let me add Somaliland should never be connected to Djibouti, right now our telephone calls are unreliable, too expensive and you some times hear Omar Gelleh shouting at his ministers. Sometimes I end up in Vietnam, people speaking alien languages.

This is horrible and thats the best they can do, now we have the opportunity to decide our own faith.

Omar Gelleh should never listen to your and your private conversation on the phone Mr Silaanyo. Reverse the so called deal with Djabouti cable (Somcable).

We need foreign (Gulf Arabians and Western) and local company to team up, that respect privacy and that will install filters and encyrptions.

    No SomCable.

      @Kayse

I like the energy that emanates from you but the facts on the ground won't change by your clever talk.

This can't of project is to big for a tribe as such need the investment of all Somali business man working for the improvement of the community and this can only happen by having a Somali state.

Kenya which has been the richest East African country for 15 years was not able to install fibre optic cable until recently.

Kayse I would advice you to invest in the unity of the Somali people, there will be no progress whatsoever if Somalia is devided into tribal states like puntland and SOmaliland etc.

I am from laasqorey and I will never except nor allow Somaliland to invade into our territory and those that are now being occcupied will not be for long which is shared by millions of Harti clans in the region.

EASSY cable company in Somaliland must be regulated

Somaliland cannot afford monopoly of its fastest growing business sector by a foreign company that doesn’t have more expertise than the local operating national companies. Local Somaliland companies have been operating successfully for more than 19 years in the country with high performance and low cost telecommunications services. Depriving these companies of their hard earned reputation and the infra structure in place by a foreign company that is simply acting as a middle man between the international cable providers and Somaliland is utterly unacceptable.
Somaliland cannot go on being used by its neighbours who are simply recognised as nations but are not democratically elected. Djibouti is categorised as among non democratic countries in the Horn of Africa.
I have just realised why all my visitors from Somaliland are marked in my website as from Djibouti. This is how I came to discover the deception:
I have a Feedjit installed in my website – http://www.medeshivalley.com
( http://live.feedjit.com/live/medeshivalley.com/0/ ) and all of those who access my site from Somaliland are marked as from " Djibouti " because of this cable company that provides service to Somaliland.
Somaliland has a population 6 times more than Djibouti and is as much larger in size and should not depend or be host to this small and semi-independent nation ( Djibouti is hostage to both the French legionnaire and the American Africom ).
I advise that Somaliland should have its own cable company operating the net for its national security and public interest.

Total propaganda. Somaliland is the least developed in the sector.

Read the World Bank and Hartford report on Somalia's private sector before spreading propaganda about how it is developed ..

    • mohamed says:

      Hey Mr. Somaliarchive

True that Somaliland is the least developed in the sector is obvious cuz the Previous Udub Regime under President Riyaale didn't do enough to control the Djiboutien free style unabated gimmicks! …resulting the Sl position completely subjugated and marginalised into a nutshell awkward backyard of scapegording or scapegoating!
Well now that a more dynamic Kulmiye party is in power, the Djiboutien and Somalia will have tough time to steal away the Sl Competitive business enterprises. This is a wake up call for the Kulmiye Govt. and any hanky panky third party unregulated dirty business of the kind in this case or any other case must be closely monitored and dealt with properly through all the
      3 branches of Governance.
Hopefully that will be the principle motto!
      Peace caano iyo nabad Cheers.

You are just a jealous piratelander who cant even control the daily bombings and attacks in Garowe and Bossaaso. So blame the two poor Warsangelis and Rahaweins.

      Go find your source:

"Opinion remains divided over finding a meaningful solution to the instability and insecurity facing Somalia but discussions held during the course of the ACP-EU meeting revealed growing awareness of Somaliland’s achievements and the potential this may hold for the democratisation and development within the region as a whole." United Nation/UNPD.

furthermore tell us why is Somali shilling 23000 against the dollar while Somaliland shilling is 6300?

Oh, thanks for showing your true self. You lose a debate and go to personal attacks. That's what people do when they don't have anything else to provide.

Bosaso and Garowe are doing much better financially and that's what you can thank your government for. I am merely providing facts and not insults.

I would be surprised if you were past High School. The Somaliland Shilling is not recognized in East Africa so it doesn't matter how much it is worth.

        Somaliland Shilling =

In December 2008, the official rate had fallen to 7,500 shillings per US dollar

"Delegates continued to note the need for state structures to be restored to Somali territory, albeit without reference to the ongoing democratisation process in Somaliland – a process that has won international commendation over recent months and where indicators of poverty, lack of development and political instability are markedly lower than in Somalia." UNPO…

He properly wont understand that paragraph since he is from Pirateland but there is Google translator.

This is ultimately about the struggle of the nations and the survival of the fittest nations. History is full of clear examples of downfall and rise of t powerful and prosperous nations. Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Somaliland, Somalia are in many ways competing for national survival reasons
