HARGEISA (Somalilandpress) — President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud hosted a Swedish delegation consisting of four ambassadors in his residence in the capital Hargeisa on Monday.

A press release by the Presidential Spokesman, Mr Abdullahi Mohamed Dahir ‘Aukusow’ said the delegates will be in the country for a two-day official visit and will hold independent talks with the Department of Finance, Planning, Foreign Affairs, leaders of the three political parties, members of Parliament, the press and aid agencies.

The President warmly welcomed Ambassador Ann Dismorr, Head of the Swedish Embassy in Nairobi, Ambassador Marika Fahlem, Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Ambassador Elizabeth Hedin, In Charge of Development Cooperation to Somalia and Ambassador Joran Bjallersted, Ambassador for Somali peace process.

President Ahmed briefed the visiting diplomats about Somaliland’s history, democratization process, stability and challenges it faces. The two sides then discussed areas of common interest and development co-operations.

The statement added the Swedish delegation were on a fact-finding mission to gathered data on areas Somaliland needs with Sweden’s assistance. The delegation disclosed that the Swedish government was ready to boost their development assistance for Somaliland after the successful election and transferring of power.

The Swedish delegation said their government was committed in supporting democracy, stability and development in the region and in the ongoing war on terror.

The Swedish visit comes week after a delegation from Denmark left the country after they agreed to also boost assistance for Somaliland.

The European visit follows recent announcement by Washington where it said it was outlining a new two-track approach towards Somaliland and Somalia. The U.S. Department of State revealed it was willing to engage with the government of Somaliland in order to combat the threat of al-Shabaab militia and the piracy in the Somali coast.

The West has hailed Somaliland’s recent elections, its ongoing efforts to combat piracy and the stability it has maintained for the last two decades.

Aid for Somaliland by Western nations is expected to double in the next year while a number of United Nation agencies are expected to shift their operations from the Kenyan capital to Hargeisa. The U.S. which previously provided Somaliland with $7 million in aids said this year it was providing over $26 million. Sweden is also one of the top three aid donors to Somaliland after the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

An American delegation consisting of diplomats and aid workers is expected to arrive after the Swedes.

Though development assistant is over due, what Somaliland most needs is recognition so that it can join the World Nations. What does development alone does if a citizen of Somaliland can not travel for business to neighbour Countries because their passport is not recognized, can not make bilateral business deals and many other needs.

It is a great pleasure to all of us to hear about the best wishes that Sweden expresses to Somaliland.

Somalia and all Somalis are a rare exception as being a singular ethnic and linguistic entity apart from the whole of Africa.

Somaliland as a nation and sate present the most profound challenge to the classic concept of Nationalism in the post colonial era.

    you have rich resource soil
    and so on..

and you asking a part of the that beautifull country to go away !!!!

while all country over all are willing to unite , for example look at EU

all what i can say is ,,, those people who posted this website are not somali people ,, ( real somali)

    • mohamed says:

Look MR. Smart. EU are govts. who saw wars conflicts long times ago and since reached
good levels in every field to unite, the Somalis can not unite simply because they are not
upto the task of uniting…specially the Southern Somalia is ungovernable and do not have the
ability and capacity to understand how to govern and what good governance is all about.
For as long as the South is madly manipulated by Darod and Hawiye, Don't dream of Unity for
quite sometime yet…Imagine since the fall of the Military dictator Barre 1991, 20 years after
Somalia is unable to govern itself and in deep mayhem upto this moment.
Therefore the best way is let go the Somaliland to take its course for getting political recognition
      from the free Nations.
      Cheers.

Sweden is home to large Somaliland community and in the past the Swedish government did admit they are having rough times in their country. The best way to see how Somaliland community and the other Somalis can adopt to life in Sweden is to study the case of Somaliland. By understanding Somaliland I am certain Sweden will find a solution for its large Somali refugee communities, instead of visiting MPLS and other US cities.

Finally what Somaliland needs from Sweden is educational cooperations for example in the areas of peace promotion and research through the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, military assistance and finally in strengthening the democracy in the region.

    Welcome Amb. Ms Dismorr

Hey Joseph why don't you brush up on IMF and World Bank policy's, Perhaps you and others may not be aware of this, but when the rest of Somalia gets their act together and becomes stable if ever, they owe a TON of money to that intresting organization you call IMF.Who took the debt out none other then the guy who leveled Hargiesa, and please don't be naive enough to assume because of the war and everything its written off. On the contra re! can you say INTEREST!!
Only chance we stand as Somaliland is recognition there for nothing can be put on us

    • Joseph Jamene says:

      You are correct Incognito.

Somaliland may not be ready for Loans and returns from such institutions as the IMF and The World Bank. This is very true as a start up economic and National Unit.

What about pure GRANTS from the IMF and The World Bank. Both institutions do as a matter of fact offer grants for member states.Pure Grants.

The World Trade Orgnization may pay special attention for Somaliland .The orgnization deals with justice on the Exchange of commodities, state to state complaints on trade and on other vast issues.

      Thank you for your questions.

Again thank you. You really addressed the IMF/W.Bank issues.
Somaliland may or may not need… the grants for Member States and the Ton of money aid debts
MR. Incognito is talking about should be written off to Somalia proper since they were responsible
        for destroying Somaliland and themselves!
However Somaliland being Member of the rich Arch-basin of the Redsea, if the EU/US are
interested to develop the SL thru the WTO exactly similar to the Gulf Countries (GCC) and
elsewhere, the Ton of Aid debts MR. Incognito is talking about could be compensated in other
ways through WTO Businesses and Personnel Employment opportunities. Put in to consideration
the SL population is marginally small and Somaliland will attract huge foreign engagements.
        Cheers.

In my opinion, the Scandinavian delegates who visit Somali land are interested in two things when a relationship they want to forge with Somali land comes to fruition. They want to send some Somalilanders back to their country. Other possible items in their agenda are the troublesome piracy and terrorism. For this, they are ready to assist Somali land for the benefit of all.

Recognition is the last thing somali"land" needs for the coming five or so years. The last thing we need as a nation is a premature office delegate to speed us into the rat race that is the "world community". That would imply that the country is stable, when in fact the is a perpetuation of instablity in this region and that which lies on its eastern borders! The proof of this can be seen in its purest form when you take a stroll through the town center of Hargeisa. The fierceness between the locals themselves, between the traders who have been seated side by side for a decade. Any excuse and a rift prevails in this land which is bares a resemblance of Hobbes state of nature. So the main priority should be law and order, because without and effective and coherent judiciary system, "homeland security", all this wishful thinking is nothing but another pipe dream!
