SOMALILAND: SSC commander reveals split in his group

August 20, 2010   ·   27 Comments

LAS ANOD (Somalilandpress) — A REBEL group operating in Somaliland’s southern region of Buuhoodle is said to have disintegrated after the group failed to resolve internal rift among its senior leaders.

The SSC group, abbreviation for the disputed –Sool, Sanaag and Cayn regions who threatened to launch a violent campaign against Somaliland several months ago is reportedly have defied their own leadership.

The group’s main commander, Kayse Abdi Yusuf, issued a press statement on Tuesday insisting he has formed his own rebel wing and is no longer following orders from senior rebel leadership. He accused them of trying to derail the front’s agenda and principles. He says the senior leaders including Dr Suleiman Essa Ahmed (Hagal tosiye) of Columbus, Ohio and elders from his sub clan have formed an illegal regional authority which goes against everything the group campaigned for.

He added the purpose of the SSC was to campaign for the reunification of Somalia not to form more regional authorities. He accused them of being power hungry and said he does not recognise such appointees [regional authority].

“We are rebels and rebels have no right forming their own authorities. States require income taxes and this goes against all we stood for. It will destroy our prime objective, so I call on the executive leadership to reverse their decisions,” he said.

Another rift exists between Kayse, another Buuhoodle based executive member called Mohamed Hassan Burale and Sool-based tribal leader Garad Jama.

Kayse Abdi, who is the former governor of Puntland to the region added SSC is nearing a total collapse and in a bid to rescue the mission he formed a new front called Badbaado (rescue).

elders and senior SSC members try to resolve rifts

The new President in Somaliland has vowed to resolve the issue in Buuhoodle peacefully and said a dialogue offer was on the table for the rebels. A source close to the government told Somalilandpress there is some degree of contact between them and some of the elders in Buuhoodle and senior SSC rebel leaders.

The news that some of the senior leadership have low key contacts with Hargeisa has deepened a rift among the elders and the two camps that make up SSC (Burawadal and Buuhoodle elders).

In the latest development, at least ten SSC fighters and their pickup truck were welcomed in Sool region’s provincial capital of Las Anod on Thursday night. Abdulrahman Osman, Somaliland military official based in the town has confirmed the news of the deserters and said they were in the custody of the army and are been rehabilitated. He stated they were part of SSC’s militia in Buuhoodle but originally hail from the Sool region. The driver of the truck is named as Bidar Hassan Madobe.

A number of clashes flared up between Somaliland army stationed in the region and the rebels who are using hit and run guerrilla attacks.

This group has been completely dismantled and disintegrated for good. The elders from Burao went to Buhoodle to propose them an idea. Somaliland will move some of its army from Buhoodle but they have to kick out all rebels from the region.

The result is this the collapse of SSC, now they are fleeing to Tukaraq near Puntland and Puntland is waiting for them on the border.

The elders in Sool have learned how Buhoodle tricked them so now they are mad and offering their own fruits to Somaliland's forces to move their army and keep them in Buhoodle.

While elders in Buhoodle want Somaliland to keep its army in Sool.

Very funny, thats dhulbahante for you. We have the sick nomads and their terrorist, all it took was give them two ministers.

This group "SSC" brings in my mind the ugly and dark side of africa, AK47, RPG7,Hunger,Genocide. but i am highly confident that people of Somaliland including buuhoodle and widhwidh residents have the will and power to make a difference.

Have you gone mad Mr Kayse. Its not the political gains the Dulbahante tribe made in Somaliland that caused their ignorant militia's split, but the usual greed and lust for power of their repel leaders. Don't underestimate the large number of the Dulbahante people who are against SSC and want to be part of a democratic, progressive Somaliland.

Most Somalilnders donot know that some foreign diplomatic missions in Nairobi has encouraged this group to come into being, in the months before the presidential elections were held in the great republic of Somaliland, because those foreigners were not so sure at that time as to how the presidential election would unfold. But Because the presidential election wax a remarkable success, those foreign missions has issued firm orders to this shaky group to disperse and utterly disappear from the face of the earth, and has already cut all pay cheques from them. All elders of this clan, who are stationed in Garoowe are ordered to make peace and join Somaliland, and thus help undermine this weak and poinless group of puppets , who are already divided into opposing factions along the tribal lines.
The only attack this group ever dared to launch was that of Widhwidh. It took them two years to prepare, but the mighty defence forces of Somaliland litrally taught them a lesson even before they could start any offensive. They didnot even had time to collect their fallen ones. Now he is isolated and is threatening to defect to Budlaan. No wonder then that this group has evaporated upon orders from their pay masters in nairobi.

You got few things right there. First of all no foreign diplomats dispatched them however the U.S. embassy in Nairobi is following the group in particular the US FBI and CIA team are watching their activities in Ohio and MPLS.

They know the money that is been chanelled to them through Tawakal Hawala Express. I wont say the full details but the CIA is following the group and in the last two months it has froze assets from them…thats why now they stressing out and turned on each others.

They lost the election, diplomacy and the support of others…the result is self distraction..

this is why i am not even a fan of Silaanyo making deals with them he should just clean up the last 50 militants left in Saaxdheer and Dharkayn-Geenyo.

After that go after the few hiding in burowadal and tukaraq (Bashe Ali Jama and Yasin Tamad).

No more cayr money for them from USA because USA supports democracy in Somaliland and wants the stability to expand to the south.

This commander, Keyse Abdi Yusuf, seems principled rebel with this view- the purpose of the group is to reunify Somalia not to form more regional groups. His thinking is what Somali people need today. This means we need more people like this guy.

I have to disagree though, Somalia do not need re-unification. Somalia is united and no one can change that unity no matter what.

To me SSC is way more realistic than the entity that calls itself Somaliland Republic.

Somaliland is more unified than ever. Dhulbahante I am adiving you to stop your nonesense and join building up democracy and developing the country, otherwise you will always lose. You can't stand the full muscle of Somaliland. If So called Runsheeg and the other person who agree with him are like somebody walking in the dark withour a flashlight. There is nothing called Somalia anymore. The Dhulbahante nomads are about clan and tribe and that is why they are so backward and not Somalia. They are just hiding their toxic tribalism under the guise of so-called Somalia. Somalia is a fiction and don't exist anymore. Their talk is all about clan and lust for power which they will never get. They got to much power in Siyad Barre's short lived Darood dream, but will never happen again. They are losers. If you love the former Somali Republic do something about the mayhem in Mogadishu. People who failed to manage even a village are no match for Somaliland. Somaliland can't be harmed by a bunch of disorganized, primitive tribes men (Ali-Baystayn. Somlailnad is too powerful, too educated, and too smart to be harmed by this bunch of loud mouth losers.

    • Darwiish says:

I would advice you not to insult a whole tribe by naming them primitive, cause of all know who the is more primitive. One fact is that the Harti tribe inhibit larger regions and have solid more noble history than any of the tribes in the region.

One thing I will agree is that they are disorganised and is a fact that they have to face inshalaah in the near future.

We the people of SSC have chosen our own paths unlike you the people of Awdal who are the hostages of SNM warlords. We are going to protect our own region by barrel of a gun and if takes hunders of years let it be.

We will never and never come under the SNM tribe or our Harti brothers in Puntland we are free and we will die free inshalaah.

Cayn is not a region of Somaliland, it is a tiny village area. The Harti don't inhabit Sool and Sanaag entirely, perhaps only 50%. And of those 50% the majority are in support of Somaliland. That leaves only a small minority who live on the most exteme parts of Sool and Sanaag who due to geography just find it easier to inegrate with puntland.

      Awdal Man,

well said and to me Awdal is true Somaliland region and if something is not right they should deal with it through the right channels. I think its embrassing to Awdalians and is an insult to the entire Samaroons when few men who didnt get ministers use and mislead the youth.

Furthermore, Awdalians know when their Riyale was the President he was respected and his orders executed, now that he is out and we have a man from Togdheer region, should Awdalians get out their Somali flag tucked away 19 years ago because they didnt get the ministers they wanted? Or should they deal with the right channels and keep their identity.

Flip-flopping is what got reer Sool where they are.

Do you all remember that each and every tribe in Somaliland have had a long and lenghy road for peace, fraternity and brotherhood between all Somalilanders. In Borama, Berbera etc.
People in Buuhodle was their, and now are the one and the only people that broke that pact.
It is strange the lenghs one can go for nothing more than a mere jealousy.
People in Somaliland lived side by side together in that area of the globe, and certainly will in the centuries to come, peacefully and well governed- no matter what Buuhoodle group do or does'nt.

Is it not then a dream to unite Somalia and Somaliland please dadkaaga dhinac ka raac and forget the dream of unity the unwanted unity by millions of Somalilanders.

In any case let me remind you all that Dhulbahante and Warsangeli were part and parcel to the creation of Somaliland and that the majority of those people are in support of a peaceful democratic and developing Somaliland. Somalia is in endless war and choas, puntland is on the brink of collapse, haunted by inter-tribal feuds, piracy and militias they helped create.

Cayn is in Sool and inhabited by only the Isaaks. The Hartis of Lascanod and Ceerigabo Sool and Sanaag counties multi Isaak-Harti the Isaaks are the majority say 70% with Harti say 30% but of course only a new census will certify the real truth. But definitely the Harti Sool and Sanaag are no more than 30% and even land wise is in no match with the lands of the Isaaks. Anyways, since Somaliland is modernising itself to democratisation process, the diseases of clanism will diminish and the landers will be able to freely integrate into any Somaliland Region in the foreseeable future…hopefully like the Industrialised countries. Cheers.
