Somaliland: Speaker of Elders Meets with Dutch Delegation

HARGEISA(Somalilandpress) — The speakers of Council of Elders and the Council of Representatives held a meeting with delegation from Holland today that have been in the country for the last few days and held meetings with Foreign Affairs Minister and mayor of Hargeisa.

The delegation held close door meeting with second deputy speaker of Council of Representatives Mr. Baashe Mohamed Farah at a closed door meeting which the media were not allowed. After the meeting came to an end, the second deputy parliamentary speaker briefed the press about the major issues that they discussed.

Mr. Baashe Farah said that they conversed with delegation about the aid that the government of Holland allocated Somaliland, democracy, renovation of parliament premises and offering training to parliament staff. He further added that they made an appeal to the delegation to increase the aid earmarked to Somaliland government.

On the other hand, the delegation met with first deputy speaker of Somaliland Council of Elders Mr. Sheekh Ahmed Nuur Furreh. The two sides discussed common interest of the countries ranging from the bilateral ties between the two nations and the humanitarian assistance that Holland provides to Somaliland. The delegation is led by the ambassador of Holland to Kenya and he spoke to Somalilandpress after concluding his meetings with Somaliland speakers of both Houses. The ambassador made clear that Holland’s commitment in supporting the democracy in Somaliland will continue.

Speaking on this issue, he said, “we provide the aid to Somaliland through AWEPA that works in cooperation with African parliament to strengthen parliamentary democracy in Somaliland. We fully support the new building for Somaliland Council of Elders that is currently underway here. We spoke with the speaker about that issue. We hope that the building will be completed in March the coming year and it will be ready by that time and to make clear that Holland supports the democracy in Somaliland concludes the ambassador his speech.”
