SOMALILAND: Sool elders hold secret meetings with Al Shabab

June 5, 2010   ·   75 Comments

MOGADISHU (Somalilandpress) — Members of Dhulbahante’s religious order and elders have been holding a secret meeting organised by Banadir Islamic Society with Al Shabab in Somalia’s capital for the past week.

The meeting which was spearheaded by Sheikh Ali Muhammad Hassan, head of Banadir Islamic Society, took place in Mogadishu and brought together members of Dhulbahante clan from Sool region in Somaliland and senior members of Al Shabab group. The Dhulbahante delegation was led by Mr Ahmed Abdullahi Shanlo, who is an important elder in the tribe and Ali Abdalla Hassan, an intellectual and religious figure.

The group praised al shabab for their holy war in Somalia and said they stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the radical group and their “Islamic agenda” for the region. Mr Shanlo compared their religious war with that one Muhammad Abdullah Hassan (Mad Mullah) has waged against the British, Italians and the Ethiopians at the end of the eighteenth century. Mr Shanlo described the current war Al Shabab is waging as just and holy.

Many believe Muhammad Abdullah Hassan and Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd’Allah (the Mahdi), a Sufi Sheikh of the Samaniyya order in Sudan to have inspired Al qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. Mohammad Abdullah Hassan received most of his religious training in what is present day Saudi Arabia, where he studied a fundamentalist brand of Islam called Salihiya, a neo-Sufis teachings similar to the Wahhabism. When Muhammad Abdullah returned to Somaliland he created a religious split among the Somalis between Salihiya and pro-Qadiri brotherhood which led to armed confrontations. Mohammad and his darwish (dervish) army were eventually defeated in 1920.

Mr Hassan on his part requested support from al shabab against a recent Ethiopian forces that crossed into the town of Buhodle, the traditional home of Sayid Abdullah.

Ethiopia recently established a military post just in the outskirts of Buhodle that has largely angered the locals. The two sides clashed about two weeks ago when the army seized at least 17 transport vehicles. The Ethiopians have since taken the transport across the border and into the town of Jigjiga (see Hundreds flee their homes in Buhodle).

Sheikh Ali Muhammad Hassan praised the Dhulbahante kinsmen for the recent clash with the Ethiopians in the town that left at least 13 dead and over 30 hurt.

In the end all parties agreed there was need to spread the Quran throughout the region.

The Dhulbahante clans mainly inhabit parts of Sanag and Sool in Somaliland’s eastern regions. The clan is currently divided between pro-Somaliland, Somalia, Puntland and Islamists groups that operate in Somalia’s south.

Al Shabab and some members of the Dhulbahante clan including the SSC who operate under the Northern Somalia Unionist Movement (NSUM) want to spoil the presidential elections in Somaliland by targeting polling stations, transportation and the military personnel in Sool and Sanag regions.

Both Sool and Sanag regions are within Somaliland but small members of the locals want to be part of Mogadishu.

It's not all of the Dhulbahante tribe, some of them just want to cause chaos in the region since their region is the least developed and education is very low. They think creating war and chaos is one excuse to hide under for failing to develop their region because every tribe in Somaliland and Somalia developed their own.

Are they expecting "development aid" from Hargeisa or Garowe? hahahahaha

Some of them are happy to send their kids as suicide bombers and its music to al shabaab's ears.

the dhulbahante clan are interested to form a coalition with any regional organisation in somalia except for somaliland and thats why all you somalilanders are angry that they insisted to chose another organisation. yes the sool, sanaag and cayn regions where the dhulbahante clan mainly inhabit is one of the poorest regions in somalia but that is not an excuse to why the dhulbanate people want to join alshabab, i mean don't get me wrong i strongly disagree with this decision they have reached. The dhulbahante clan have fought for somalia's independence durning the time of mohammed abdullah hassan where they have lost great blood and sweat and therefore the dhulbahante people just want somalia to stay somalia and they are willing to support anybody who is seeking the same objective.
this is wrong the majority of the dhulbahante clan support one thing and that is for somalia to be just somalia. in fact i have never seen some body from my clan (d hulbahante) suggesting they would advocate for somalilands independence or anything like that. The sool and sanaag case is one of the cases that somaliland wants to keep under the duvet while they show the wolrd how peaceful somaliland is,

It is so strange that Dhulbahante wants to wake up the dead dynasty of the so called DAROOD RULE. Even during it's exisitence Dhulbahant's was the least beneficiary as LasAnod still got the broken hospital bulding left by the Britishers. The first University is now functioning when Somaliland came in and rule of law is in place.Hence, when Dhulbahante will ever give up hate, jealousy and creating a monster enemy called Iiddoor that doesn't exist?,once again Dhulbahante is making historical mistake to a people who might have thier share of wrong doings but never took Dhulbahante as their primary enemies.Fraternity and Brotherhood is surely more productive than fueling enemity war and producing fresh refugees when Somaliland is creating a base for Somalis to grow before extinction.

You are wrong Somalilandpress. Sool and Sanaag are two of the eighteen provinces of Somali Democratic Republic.

Somalia and greater Somalia are different. I do not know why secessionists mix the two. Greater Somalia is land inhabited by Somali race in Horn of Africa and inshalah, it will unite one day.

Somalia on the other hand, is the recognized republic that is part of the UN. It was established by the Somali people who shed their b;lood for their freedom from the British and Italians. Some clan secessionists though are working overtime to destroy what we have sacrificed so much for for their own personal economic and political interests but they will not succeed.

these regions are also inhabited by bahwaynta Habar yonis< bahwaynta Habar Jeclo plus insignificant number of Hawiye Clan. If consenus is conducted of

He personally gave ten kids scholarships.

They will never get civilized and be nomads forever…now also its clear why SSC militia are all nomadic men collected from their villages.

They inhabit parts of Sool (Las anod, widhwidh and bocame) not Caynabo etc.

In Sanag they dont live in one town, name any if you can.

The largest city in Sanag is Erigavo and we all know who runs Erigavo, so if your nomads and take your camels for grassing those regions dont mean it belong to you.

It's like Ogadens who move their camels across three international borders (Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia) and think it's their land. Dhulbahante and Ogadens go wherever the rain goes.

For those of you who are S.LAND WORSHIPERS, I advice you not to be fool to hate your own identity, forget the past and let us unite our country to fight terror.

That is why international community always worry recognizing Somaliland would open new problems like clan fighting and once again people will lost another 30 years as they already did. People can accuse anything they want with others whoo may disagreed with them.

I think we all need to get real because labelling terrorrist those who disagreed with you won't do anything accept little support from Etho since the rest of the world now understand people where misleading world leader by labelling terrrorrist their opposed. Even if two neighbors get into argument, they would use Mr.Bush's language like you are wiht us or agaist us;therefore, you Somalilanders are doing the same and I don't think it will do any good for your country by calling terrorrism where its political disagreement between your people. You may need talk to one another to resolve problems because using these terms you damaging yourselves. Beside, don't forget Amarica is leading by Mr. Obama not Mr. Bush.

what ever you dream somaliland will never ending. but know one thing dhulbahante will never satisfied, siyad bare even hasn't satified the dream of greater somali so how come dhulbahante will bring that. look my brothers sool sanaag and cayn. isaaq tried before even bare.

none of us achieve this dream and now we decide to take our region somaliland and declared independence 26 june 1960 to bring it back. jabuuti is not interesting kenya and ethiopia are against this idea so today we are too against this idea. you people accept or not you will be our under administration and you will always be somaliland. never mix two diferent things greater somali is contain all the people who speak somali that is incluuding somaliland djibouti somalia NFD and westen somali region. that is dificult to bring it back why we rest of somalis are not interested that idea. that are somaliland djibouti NFD and western somali region. so somalia will be back off no matter how they dream. but you really need to know somalia is only starting from bosaso to raaskaanbooni. so it is meaning you are talking about that bit. but sorry this is nothing to do with us we are called somaliland so never mixed up somalia and greater somali.

It sad to hear that some members of the Dhulbahante clan have chosen to associate with Al-shabaab. What a mistake! These groups are looking for their tribes destruction and dismay. Among all groups, choosing to join a terror group like Al-Shabaab has absolutely ended any relationships that may have existed between these mindless groups and the people of Somaliland. Anyone, group or groups who behaved, behaves, or will behave like these bucket heads must be confronted immediately and fought against them mercilessly. They are a natural born stupids and they must be eliminated from the society.

Com on guys, you don't disgrace the whole clan. Please don't do that. Dhulbahante will never accept Al-shaydan to came to their state. You know Dhulbahante fought for the freedom of Somalia and Somalis but not for religious reasons. So don't worry even if Dhulbahante insists to not recognize somaliland's indepdence because they have the right to deny has Isaaqs have the right refuse somali weyn. You can't force clan that has larger land than you do. in fact, Dhulbahante is very small subclan of harti darood and has more land than than Isaaq. My advice is not disgrace the wonderful people of Dhulbahante, ISaaq and other clans. Politics is politics. but foresure there are blood suckers, moryanis, theives, gaalos, and corrupted politicians in every clan and Dhulbahante is not exception. YOu want to know why Dhulbahante land is the least developed? because they don't have sea. Their captial, Las'anod is land locked region. They waited for the United Somalia and avoided civil war. Now they realized they have to build their own administration, the SSC which is headed by another corrupted foreign funded morans

    Just three corrections:
    1. All Dhulbahante do not support SSC terror group, just a handful do.
    2. We hear you talk about the Darawish, it is funny to forget that the leaders of the drawish were of Isaaq decent & those who defeated them were Isaaq. If you want to go the same route as the Darawish- Good luck
    3. Let us not forget that Dhulbahante is minority not only in Somaliland, but in Sool, Sanaag and Cayn. What places can they claim besides half of Buhodle town and half of Las Anood.
