Somaliland :Renationalization of Power Sector underway

Somaliland government has announced the Renationalization of the Hargeisa and Berbera Electricity agencies placing them under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Public works, Transport and Housing with immediate effect.

President Silanyo today issued a decree No. JSL/M/XERM/249-1336/092012 invoking the managerial authority of the two managers who were earlier tasked with running the two main power agencies in the country, hence placing them under the Ministry of Public works, Transport and Housing

The KULMIYE government had agreed to new electricity subsidies for the poorest households for at least two years charging less than one Dollar per unit compared to the private sector which charge in excess of one Dollar per unit ,

The Hargeisa and Berbera Power agencies were charged with operating in the public interest, hence been forced to be under strong political and social pressures to give much more attention to externalities.

The two Agencies which have for quite some time now forced to operate in a sort of some loss making activities where social benefits are clearly greater than social costs.
