HARGEISA — President Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo is expected to visit the Gulf nations of Kuwait and United Arab Emirates at their invitation sometime this week. According to sources close to the state, the Kuwaiti government has sent a private jet for the President and he will reportedly attend a series of meetings with senior ministers and business executives in the Gulf States.

The government has not officially commented on the trip but official sources in Dubai told local media that the president will hold talks with  Kuwait energy companies. It added a Kuwaiti company has already obtained concessions to explore and drill for oil and minerals in blocks originally granted to Chevron and Amoco by Siad Bare in the 1980s. The two American oil giants were forced to halt and withdraw from the country after the Somali National Movement (SNM) led by the current president overran Siad Bare’s forces.

Early studies have shown that Somaliland has proven deposits of oil along the coast and the Golis mountain ranges. It also has extensive natural coal deposits (estimated at 5 billion tonnes) in the Daban Basin (southeast of Berbera), Guveneh Hills (north of Las Dureh) and Hed-Hed (south of Onkhor) Large quantities of titanium and zircon also exist. Kuwait funds and supports a number of development programs in Somaliland and recently announced it was providing $10 million to renovate both Hargeisa and Berbera airports. Kuwait also has plans to assist Somaliland in the areas of education and health.

After Kuwait, the President will go on to Dubai where he will first meet with as yet undisclosed Chinese company and is expected to sign a deal for the development of the port of Berbera. In recent months, the Government of Ethiopia has been urging Hargeisa to speed up development for its deep-water port in Berbera so that it can transfer some of its commercial cargo there rather than having to use Djibouti. All of this comes ahead of plans to build a road dubbed the Berbera Corridor linking the port-town to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. Work for the road is expected to begin mid-2012 and will cost an estimated $5.3 million which will be funded by the EU.

The President will also take part in an international conference on maritime piracy in Dubai that is co-hosted by Dubai Ports World and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 18th – 19th April. This conference according to Emirates News Agency (WAM) has already received considerable interest from the international community and will seek to be a vehicle for discussion and generate policy ideas to tackle what has become a growing menace to harmonious trade in the region. Dubai has signalled its willingness to become a driving force against piracy in an effort to restore maritime confidence in the region since it is a global hub for trade and commerce. DP world is one of the largest marine terminal operators in the world, operating in more than 31 countries with over 50 terminals.

All of these discussions and commercial activity is further proof if it were needed of Somaliland’s inexorable move towards being fully accepted and recognized as a sovereign state by the international community.

Somaliland departed from Somalia after a union between the two Horn of Africa nations failed in 1991 following a bloody civil war.

This is good news for both Somaliland Kuwait and the UAE. Hopefully the President and his
team would be able to optimize their business dealings with the Arab Gulf Countries in all
fields of mutual bilateral trade relations to facilitate Somaliland Republic to become another
hub for development in exactly the same way the British and other industrialised EU countries
developed the Arab Gulf countries and IRAN and elsewhere global etc. Special thanks to
the Editor MR. Mark. T. Jones. for the report.

I think, it is not yet an official visit from government to government, but yet a good step forward towards our national pride and prosperity. All Arab states are against our secession from Somalia, but now they came to the terms that Somaliland will no longer be ignored, in terms of their national development and status as an independent state.

It is indesputable that Somaliland is de facto state and it is going in the footsteps of Taiwan. Foreign countries will sign contracts with Somaliland because national interests transcend international law. Those who argue about this theme should understand how the real world works. The world is looking for energy, raw materials and markets. Where these things are found, everybody will go to it.

     Reply
    • mohamed says:

Can you explain what's the meaning of: A de facto. If you compare Somaliland to Taiwan then
you are admitting that indisputably Somaliland is integral part of Somalia and remains another
Puntland of Somalia. Why deny the Independence of Somaliland of the 1960s which automatically
and indisputably makes Somaliland free from Somalia.
      Cheers.

Maashaa alah Somaliland is going forward what ever you like or not .We can stop for anywan who don,t like somaliland But Somaliland poeple and their govement are united I intend to throw some lights upon recent foreign diplomatic developments that new Somaliland government has stepped since president Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo was inaugurated to office in July 2010. Looking twenty years back that Somaliland has been an independent state; little progress has been achieved with regards to establishing meaningful diplomatic ties with international community.
this step is good for Somaliland and Arab Country who ingore Somaliland long time

OH for the love of God, Don't blame the Arabs, blame Somaliland for not playing the right cards
not towards the Arab League Countries but even more so with the IC diplomatic channels as well.
At long last after almost 20 years since 1991 It would seem that the President Silaanyo type Govt.
now in power is finding the more proper wardropes to engage the right catch-ups within the premises
of how the progressive world works and conducts their businesses.

OH for the love of God, in any way you look at it, Somaliland is the chieftain Mandeeq taking
the pills (as always was/is the case) and wearing the real helmets/swimsuits of the Imperialist FWC democratic values and connected to the fast secular knowledges and tolerant religious ideologies of great Shakespear Kingdom Empire headed by HMG ..all across the Global village of the contemporary World order
of our generational ERA. Make no mistake about it something dramatic is taking place in Somaliland
well connected to the fastly experienced world of HMG. In this regard even the World's only super power
will not be able to succeed in it's foreign policies without London and the EU not to say the least about
India,China, the Russians etc etc. In this regard whilst Somaliland is seen as the top beacon twilight
in the HOA/E.A. and beyond and Somalia as a failed State plunged deeply into beyond all repairs
let's be fair to the Somaliland progress and welcome the good news. It's also upto Somaliland whether
to bid for a new British Commonwealth membership or not in dealing with the recognition issues.
    Cheers.

I am really happy that Somaliland is having such discussions with the rest of the world. And I am especially proud with all the new projects underway even in a time of economic uncertainty. However, I am always skeptical of discussions being held between heads of state in private.

People have no idea what the president is conceding in this discussion, either for personal gain or because he naively believes that he's helping his nation. I really wish that all meetings between heads of state or any person who was elected would have a recording with him/her by law and make those recordings public. This would greatly reduce any back door deals that go against the interest of the nation.

it would have been much better if somaliland would ask the somali youth from the west who are educated or studying geology to come back to the motherland and work in the industry and the somaliland govt buy the machinery needed to extract these minerals; this way the money stays in somaliland and only goes towards somalis. kuwait, uae and chinese companies will all get the piece of the pie and profit tens of millions… if not hundreds of millions from somaliland. this is not good. i hope the government is looking after somali interests.

however, i am so glad somaliland is progressing. but i urge somali students and youth back in the west to come back to the motherland and help your fellow somalis back home. teach the skills to the somalis back home so then they dont require international assistance or the "ill scratch your back if you scratch mine" notion that kuwait, uae and chinese companies have done.

somaliland haa nolaato, somalia haa nolaato, all somalis around the world, haa noo laadaan

I can no longer take this Somaliland gov seriously and it saddens me to see how our so-called leaders are incompetent and unable to utilise our natural resources by self-sufficient means.

I personally met officials of the S/Land gov and believe me it sickens me how a small 'elite' is intent in controlling/selling our resources to either the whites, Arabs and now the Chinese.

Ali it's about time we make use of our natural resources, we're a poor country and there's rampant unemployment. We have to entice investors and make money from our natural resources to build and develop our country. Would you rather we sit and do nothing . Miyanu dawana natural resourceskena?

       Reply
  19. Ali says:

Mohamed11, Yes I do want our natural resources to be exploited but I also want Somalis, our own people to be the main benefit….NOT foreigners and their shareholders!

This S/Land gov needs to be open and transparent to it's citizens and not just give us false information about "so and so Berbera Port development with an unnamed Chinese firms…or a so and so oil contract" etc….

Believe me Mohamed11 and all, I had met these officials and they are very incompetent and lack clear strategy in promoting our nation's wealth. Furthermore, what is also disturbing is this myth that is peddled by the Somalis that our nation is blessed with mineral wealth. This speculative notion with no factual geological facts or proven commercial reserves MUST end.

We can no longer live in this false hope and dream that we have extensive and diverse mineral wealth when there has been no exploration work in several years. And until than, let's exploit what we do have!!!

Can anyone please tell me what ” de facto state” means. I don’t understand the word ” de facto” thanks

     Reply
    • Faisal says:

" de facto state" means that you are state without international recognition and de jure is the opposite .
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_facto

"De facto is a Latin expression that means "by [the] fact." In law, it means "in practice but not necessarily ordained by law" or "in practice or actuality, but without being officially established." It is commonly used in contrast to de jure (which means "concerning the law")

"Similarly, a nation with de facto independence, like Somaliland, is one that is not recognized by other nations or by international bodies, even though it has its own government that exercises absolute control over its claimed territory"
