Somaliland: President Siilaanyo meets former 1500m World Champion Abdi Bile Abdi

HARGEISA(Somalilandpress)-Somaliland president Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Siilaanyo today met with former 1500m World Champion Abdi Bile at the presidential palace. Mr. Abdi Bile who is known for beating for top runner Sebastian Coe in Barcelona and winning the gold medal for Somalia.

President Siilaanyo articulated his admiration towards the former Somali world champion athlete who made history in 1984 at the Barcelona games. President Siilaanyo thanked Mr. Abdi Bile for his work with Somaliland athletics and also for helping to rebuild the sport of running in Somaliland. Mr. Siilaanyo highlighted his government’s achievement in the short time that they have been in office that they were able to hold Somaliland State Tournament in Burco city.

Somaliland minister of Sports, Youth and Culture Mr. Abdi Said Faahiye briefed the president of Somaliland on the history of former Somaliland legend Mr. Abdi Bile Abdi and told that he was three-time Olympian middle-distance runner (1984, 1992 1996) and in addition being Somali 1987 World 1500 m Champion.
On the other hand, Mr. Abdi Bile Abdi thanked the president of Somaliland for the warm and cordial welcome that he received and lauded the government of achieving to hold country’s state tournament and he said that this was a step taken in the right direction and also motivation to Somaliland youth for direction their drive in all types of sports. Mr. Abdi Bile Abdi is the third world renowned Somaliland born athlete that visited the Hargeisa, Somaliland capital. Mo Farah and Jama Mohamed Adan ‘Jama Karacin’ paid visit to Somaliland recently.

    I have good old memories of Abdi Bile and also saw him lately in Columbus Ohio as he came to motivate the Somali student association. He encouraged students to develop the sense of belongings to their new land while keeping their origins in the heart. I would like to see our international athletes help discover new runners from the homeland and produce them to the universe. I am sure there are a lot like Mr. Bile and Mr. Farah. They are waiting to be discovered.

    Abdi Bile is a great Somali man. Don't v get to excited about the fact that he Somalilanders as Somalis just the same way you see him as a Somali-lander.
    I am glad he training somali athletes in North Somalia.
