OTTAWA — Somaliland political party Xaqsoor is holding a rally Saturday at Ben Franklin Place in Nepean to inaugurate the party’s first office in Canada.
Somaliland is a self-declared independent nation in north Somalia that is not recognized by Canada or any other country. With just more than 20 years of recognizable democracy and a functional judicial system, rally organizers said the event will showcase the energized democracy of Somaliland and raise interest and funds from Somaliland immigrants in Canada.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Ben Franklin Chamber at 101 Centrepointe Dr. and is open to the public. The event will feature speeches by party organizers and Somaliland ambassador to Canada Lula Ahmed Osman.
Xaqsoor is one of three major parties in Somaliland and has held similar rallies in London and Toronto. Saturday’s event will introduce the party’s first office in Canada to the sizable diaspora community living in Ottawa and Toronto.
“Since we are Canadian, we know how democracy works. We feel important as Somalis with the privilege of living in Canada to have our interests represented,” said Dualeh Abdulkadir, director of security and Somaliland community service.
The event will present the party’s agenda, fundraise for the upcoming election in early 2013 and ask attendees to engage in Canadian community and not to behave in ways that might jeopardize safety in Canada.
Much of Somaliland’s economy relies on relatives living abroad and most maintain dual citizenship.
The party’s Canadian branch chairman Mohamed Farah Xareed said the party is deciding among a few options in Ottawa’s east end for the location of the office, but is seeking to motivate supporters and showcase the healthy democratic atmosphere of Somaliland at the rally.
No matter which party Somalis living abroad support, the state needs international recognition, Xareed said.
“With our achievements in democracy in the last 20 years, we count on Canada to take the lead (in recognizing Somaliland),” he said.
Rallies like the one on Saturday, Abdulkadir said, show the strength and seriousness Somalis invest in elections.
The organizers estimate 200 people will show up for the event and expect it to last around four hours.@ottawacitizen.com

Xaqsoor with a visionary leader like mj hassan isse jama would become one of the major political parties in somaliland.
Do he speak english? More importantly we should work with Britain and offer them something. Just look at Qatar and UAE. No small nation can stand alone ore else it will be eaten by the big lion USA. I am not even sure if they want democracy in Somaliland. Maybe they prefer a stable country with a dictator or a royal family so we dont mess up their oil supply.
I assume This place where The rally held not ottawa put somewhere in somaliland region.
They only want to rally to get free BBQ from the mothers. You know how it is…what else would they be rallying for when their party is not even recognized inside the former house of Morgan? I never heard of anything called Xaqsoor and when someone calls them "major party" you know something is wrong with this article and the author.
Every habar has a party and they don't number more than 40,000 members per habar…I don't know anyone that calls that major.
Rally for hot-dogs.
Kayse,
Why do you pretend to know all? I have never came across in any website, whether this or other ones, a self-centered arrogant person like you. There is a saying in english, " he who thinks he knows something often turn to know nothing". Whenever i read your comments on this website, It always reminds me this cot. Your comments comes across, either you are lacking self-confidence or some screw missing from your brain. Please, do not embarrass yourself day by day.

It’s obvious on the picture isn’t??
Xaqsoor is the healthy way to go for Somaliland politics, Leadership isn’t Something Somaliland can belittle anymore for the sake of security ever again. Peace and stability has been established firmly and sacrificed it for almost two decades, it is time to change fundamentally the way we do Justices and development in Somaliland. Muj Hassan Esse Jama is the ideal candidate for this daunting Task anyway you look at it. Long Live Somaliland.
Somaliland needs real vision and creative new ideas complemented with hard work.
If we truly want to become viable and independent country than we need to work really hard, better our governance and abolish competing with eachother based on clans. It needs hard work, patience and honesty.
Somaliland needs to bring about real changes, critical thinking, do research and implement the changes carefully and accordingly.
And most importantly create sustainable economy. Economic development will even have positive impact on the social aspect. For example the police that asks for ducadi or bribery will not have the need to do so instead will do his job better or we can invest more to improve security and many others including creating jobs for the youth. The health, education and life style will improve. So that area needs a major work and there are lots of things we can do that can contribute to the economy.
I am sorry sister, but somaliland government has no intention to improve the livelyhood of the somalilanders, i think the people will benefit more if somaliland join the south because of the economical outcomes. Simply, it is hard to live on what the daiaspra are sending home, that will not be for ever. Once this generation, the generation in europe i mean, is dead, there will not be a next generation to feed our children in somaliland. Somaliland is boasting about the 21 years but in reality there is nothing absolutely no improvement what so ever otherwise you wouldn't see them in every corner in europe. Somalis in europe are the biggest obstical to somalia, that's just because their mouthes are full and they have loads of fools admiring them when they are only a bunch of thieves!
Somaliland even though poorly developed is a blessed land. Even the Oromos come to Somaliland to seek better life (economic refugees) They come to beg and Somalis are generally decent and kind people and they give.
Nevertheless, I was thinking Somaliland should change its name to Republic of North Somalia or come up with another name and maybe even rearrange or alter the flag.
