Somaliland: Police arrest 8 al Shabab suspects

September 5, 2010   ·   25 Comments

HARGEISA (Somalilandpress) – Somaliland police arrested eight people in the city of Burco with links to the extremist militant group, Al Shabab. Burco Police charged them with intent to commit terrorism activities in Somaliland and affiliation with terrorist organization. Some of the suspects are Somaliland nationals and others are from Southern Somalia.

The Governor of Togdheer Region, Yasin Mohamoued Abdi held a press conference in Burco, in which he detailed some aspect of the police investigation that led to arrest of the eight men. The governor told in the press conference the suspects were planning terror plots in Somaliland. He added that the police found two bags of explosives buried in the sand in the outskirts of the city.

The police found two bags of explosives in the outskirts of the city in this week. The explosives included large landmines and other explosives material designed to be strapped on people. Then the police were put on high alert. The police started a mass operation in the city for the last few days and arrested eight suspects as result.

He also told in the press conference that the suspects will be interrogated and will appear on court. He added, “Whoever is found not guilty will be freed immediately.”

When the Governor Yasin Abdi was asked when the outcome of the investigation will be release to the public or possible court date appearance for the suspects, he said, “The investigation is still ongoing; there could more people involved. The result of the investigation will be produced soon and those who are found guilty will have a fair trial.”

The governor added that because of increase in number of refugees coming into Somaliland from Southern Somalia, it is easy for terrorist and people with bad intentions to hide between them. But the governor emphasized that the police has been on high alert since the election. He applauded the Police for being vigilant for these kind activities.

Togdheer Region was on high alert for the last few days. There was nightly curfew and large number of police was seen in the street of the country. Ever since Hargeisa was rocked by three suicide attacks in 2008 by the militant group, al Shabab, Somaliland police services have foiled number of attacks inside Somaliland.

In June of this year before the national election, the Somaliland Police arrested eleven people in possession of firearms and explosives in city of Burco. Although no one claimed responsibility of the attack, the Somaliland authority suspected that the extremist Islamist group Al-Shabab was behind the foiled attempts. Al-Shabab threatened to sabotage the election in Somaliland.

This comes as a deadly suicide bombing killed six parliamentarians in Muna Hotel in the Somali capital two weeks ago. The attack killed more than 30 people. The Islamist militant group, Al-Shabab claimed responsibility of the attack.

The Governor requested from the people of Togdheer region to be on a high alert and to report any suspicious activities.

Somaliland needs genuine patriotic people such me to be in charge. I keep saying that and hope that I can onday be in charge of security affairs of my great and beloved country, where democracy and rule of law prevails yet war mangers from Somalia keep trying to undermine all we achieved for the last twenty years. I only want to really really protect our infant experience of democratic system. And all of you ought to buy that—here and now.

Excellent job by the police.A matured person always think individual cultural affiliation has nothing to do with a nation building.I believe it is good conscious of the majority of Somalilanders that reclaimed the independence of the republic.A wrong ill-minded person such as that one you mentioned above cannot erode the interest of this nation. For your information, I would advise those Muslims who may thing what Al-shabab is doing is acceptable considering it relevance with some part of Islamic history should revise that unfortunate portion of the history-i.e jihaad–as suicide–or killing innocent people based on their differences. We should promote the peaceful side of the religion.Hatred or not willing to accept other people choice will not reward you to heaven-jaana.We should release that some of our Islamic history contained bloodshed, subduing, invasion of others people who resisted to accept the religion. This unfirtunate wrong-dong are still maintained by some ill-minded Muslim at the moment such as Al-shabab.I never understand that killing innocent people will give Allah reward.Allah is not a fool or does expect us to get rid off any danger. This intent of some of he Muslims are satanic actions.

This is what was written in the Koran.I question myself as open-minded person,if P.Mohamed was so? And what he did was upon the Will of Almighty-Allah ? Why he took part in war and bloody confortation? I never understand he can represent Allah.I do not believe any evil deed can be related to the Almighty Allah.Do not forget P.Mohamed was tribal leader and nation builder before he claimed spirituality-became prophet after 45 years according to the Kuran. This is what some of the Muslims such as Ashabab are doping.Be brave to counter check and compare what you believe with other facts or reality such Christ.Do not take your religion as you inherited your clan.Lets open our mind we Somalis.

By the way are you a religious scholar or just an ordinary person?
You tend to be taking things out of context. If you don't know… the
Koran and Prophet Mohammed are in no way, form or
shape different than the Religions of Prophet Jesus(Isaias Messiah) and Prophets Moses/Aron and that from the
Koran upwards all take their divine laws from Prophet
Abraham and Prophet Noah…with all other mankind prophets
all the way to prophet Adam/Eve ..no clashes or crashes
in all mankind religions of God the Almighty.
All the Prophets are known to have had wars of some kind or
another so why single out the Koran and Prophet Mohammed!
you don't make sense to me and appear to have been carried
away by pure ignorance of the rich knowledge of the Koran, sorry to say that though.
            Cheers.

          • FACT of humanity says:

I know very much the Koran and the same as the Bible. You are saying P.Mohamed as above all the prophets as written in the Koran. This is what I do not agree with. I think you need to define what God or Allah is all about. Just refer the 99 ambia names that show the divine nature and Character of Allah. Then consider if such Almighty Allah will be presented by prophet with mix character-warrior and peace. It is completely absurd to assume that loving and Rahman Allah to uphold warrior. Do not justify the deeds of other prophets as an excuse. Just understand the life and character of Christ. Do you think P. Mohamed can reflect or Represent Allah than Christ? If you are maintaining all the prophets starting Adam upon the same path; consider and open your mind and analyze. Do not just mention mere statement in Koran, Mohamed as above all messengers which is not substantiated with good deed that reflect the character of Allah.

          • FACT of humanity says:

The problem with Muslims is they do not want to start discussion from the entry point “what is God or Allah- character and divine nature. If you at least maintain this as clearly described in the Koran-Ambia names then you will understand who should reflect the nature of Allah. Take from the Kuran– whatever Mohamed say or does has not come from himself –it is the will of Allah. If so what about his character? .Do you think Allah as mentioned in Ambia can be represented—by Mohamed, .open— your mind– do not fear—.This is my brotherly advise.

Man..you and me understanding of all godly religions
(all holy books ) and all his chosen prophets from
Adam down to Prophet Mohammed and the Koran,
Prophet Issias the Messiah and the Injil, Prophets
Moses/Aron and the Torah, Prophet Abraham the main
base for the religions of Torah, Injil and the Koran
and Prophet Noah and all other chosen prophets
you name them, are indeed the same characters
of the messages of containments with absolutely
            no conflicts thereof in-between themselves
whatsoever. The only differences, as Governments
change so is the case for religions but here God
had completed the Holy Koran and Prophet
Mohammed to have become the final comprehensive
seal to all the religions. In this you and me appear
not share any common ground on these sensitive
religious issues, therefore, how about if we leave

'Islam means to submit to God, submitting in a manner that is most suitable. It means to love God and to be willing to do everything possible for God, because this life is temporary and it is to God who we answer to in the end. Christianity fails to propagate true worship to God. Christianity has associated partners with God by giving him a triple identity (The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit). It's like the way a businessman can own three different businesses, but to avoid major taxes to the government he ends up registering each business with a different name creating different identities. Sounds fraudulent and the good Lord Allah is not a fraud'

The government of Somaliland should talk less and carry a BIG stick to counteract with these menacing rats.
