Finally someone that cares about the reputation, health and looks of the city. Hargeisa is full of plastic bags we need to ban them and take stronger measures to limit the use of plastics…every council has to clean the city…in its own area. Those who do not live up to standards should be dismissed.

I cant believe Jiir is still the mayor, twenty years surely he is our Housni Mubarak! We need to get rid off him! Why isnt there regional and district council elections until now?

I visited Hargeisa last year after an 11 year absence and one thing I noticed is that the city was dirtier than I last remembered it. There was rubbish scattered all over the place and I must say that I found it uncomfortable strolling through some areas of the city because of the dirt and the stench that follows. We Somalis are clean people and it was a shame to see Hargeisa turning into a Lagos or an Addis Ababa from an enviromental point of view.

Hargeisa surely needs some cleanup and lots of infrastructure and facilities. This is the right step. Let us all contribute and help the committee in keeping our environment and city clean.

Abdi, it is myth, we are not clean people. We have false pride. We don't have the decency to clean our own street, it is really sad..

  6. Nas says:

To beautify our city we need to plant trees in main city centres and side walks and clean our city regularly!. Another suggestion is for the gov to encourage the building flats and condos in our city, aesthetically, this will make Hargeisa look more modern/metro and beautiful. And the space saved in our city should be allocated in creating new public parks.

And a final advise would be to reduce nose population on the very expensive and loud diesel generators!

I wanna see more green city, cleaner city, proper trash bins, proper council doing their jobs, educating people about liter and rubbish, recycle etc.

I want to see city plans, management, path ways, proper markings on the roads, front yards, houses inline with another…not dotted all over the landscape.

First thing is deciding the main roads, once u draw that line………and demolish all those houses on the way and give the residents new homes and land…….the rest can be added.

      • Abdisamad says:

Lets begin with demolishing your house Kayse. No doubt your from the USA were houses are built on the grid system. The best cities in the world grow organically not artificially in straight lines which is unnatural.

BTW "front yards" what are you taking about you need to understand Muslim houses do not generally have front yards but have a walled front usually 2 metres high and a quadrangle in the centre with rooms around it. Nowadays many Somalis from the diaspora are building western style houses and not appreciating the muslim world design of houses which can be seen across the muslim world.

        • Kayse says:

First of all let me begin by saying you sound like an Al Shabab member and I'm sure you live in this "Western" world you despise so much. A house is a house it has no faith, and how you design it isnt an issue in any religion or belief.

Having said that, even here in the West, if your house falls within a council's project or plan they have to buy it off you and will give you the value for the area…if the next homes cost $500,000, thats how much you get and your house is demolished.

The same can be done in Somaliland and its correct because some people built houses back in the days and now they blocking the way for future projects.

Many houses will be bulldozed including some belonging to my own relatives and families I can gurantee you that. This is to improve the city for all, so its better for you to move to new house built for you by the government anyways.

Before demolishing they have to build them a house, go through with them with the design, area of choice, etc…then everyone is a winner.

          • Abdisamad says:

Nothing in my reply post suggest I "despise" the Western World nor does mentioning the the word Muslim make me an extremist like Al Shabaab.

First: The way houses are built and designed are influenced by a societies religion and culture. I need not explain this point any further as its clear as crystal. Second: You are talking about compulsory purchase orders for whole neighbourhoods forcing them to move, this in my view is oppression of communities resulting in breaking up families and friends just to "beautify" an area. Its been done before in many countries in Africa and no good has come from it. It just results in the poor people being relocated to the outskirts of the city so the rich can move in with their big square houses.

Just take minute to think about how you would feel being uprooted from your community to an unknown housing estate, as Somalis we shouldn't find that too difficult to imagine.

      • middleground says:

''proper markings on the roads'' We need the roads first!.

Besides, I wonder where all this money will come from? I think we need to calm down and not turn into another Dubai, and take our pace as development comes with the economic development.

what i have seen here are wonderful ideas that may help this newly formed city beautification committee.

let me add your points this:- The mother of Dirty it self is the Qat,, it may be it's waste, plastic bags and animals that feed it. so ban selling qat the downtown of the city, ban bringing plastic bags in the country, make our roads bigger for moving out the qayilaad and shaah shops around it.

    thank you

I don't think there will be clean cities in Somali land since khat is being consumed. How can a person who can't take care of his/her body hygiene can clean his city? The general health of the people of Somali land is deteriorating because of this drug. Before we do anything to do with sanitation , we should think of how to stop the use of Khat. These leaves are the mother of all calamities in Somali land. Khat causes insanity. How can we do our duties if we are all insane?

Although I agree with most of your comments. Somaliland should look at prioritizing immediate need for its people, if you haven’t got a food, home, job, general health and perhaps nothing to look forward to next day. Do you think people in Somaliland would care about how clean roads and cities are. Just because same of you who are in the west feel that your comfortable and therefore want to see beautiful site in Somaliland brothers dream on. We should start building communities first create jobs allow our own brothers to have the basic life instead of waiting dahabsheel handouts.

I am not a Kulmiye supporter however i really think the new administration is doing well- well-done boys one nil to udub so far, on a serious note, I think we should introduce national service again with school kids, I also think we don’t use short sentence prisors to clean the cities roads and maintain hospital buildings and other govermnt buildings.
With regards people who think Qad is part of the problem I disgree, like Shakir said give people samething to do and mobilize youth trust me the qad will finish. I feel sad to hear amount of young Somalilanders dies in the sea every year.

    • middleground says:

Hm, but you see the diseases Qat causes like mental problems? There are so many sick people already we don't need Qat to make it worse. And plus, tell me just one thing Qat is good for?? Nothing.

It takes you captive of your mind and money. So much of our money goes into that and some men think of spending it on Qat then on his family. We should take the good from other countries instead of importing the bad as we are just copying Yemenis who are far worse.

It makes people lazy and all they do is sit around and chew. I cannot see Somaliland becoming a developed nation with citizens who spend half the day on their backsides.

But I agree, it has to be multi-pronged approach, where we motivate the youth, educate thm and give them jobs. But also educate them about not wasting time, and Qat wastes a lot of time and energy of the youth.

Well, since its is *the* capital it only makes sense to *start* from there. It would be ridiculous to call some ugly place the capital of the people of Somaliland. I don't understand why some find it painful when they hear something good taking place in Hargiesa, its YOUR capital city too.

    • Ahmed says:

      I can only repeat:

That is not his point, the two should not be mutually exclusive i.e. Harheisa being "beautified" doesn't mean that other citites can't be "beautified".

Don't be so defensive, learn tot ake constructive criticism ya'll.

I don't understand why the president is involving the cabinet in the local affairs of a city!!! Surely Dr Gaboose, the Finance Minister, and others in this committee have a ot of their problems to deal with given the dire security and economic situation of Somaliland. Aren't there people including the mayor whose job is to clean the city, run its transport, plan its layouts, etc.? If those responsible for Hargaisa can not do the job required of them, why are they still in their positions getting paid? If the Hargaisa local government's job is done by the national cabinet, who is going to meet Berbera's, Boorama's, Burco's, Laascanoos's, and other towns’ local obligations? And who is going to do the real jobs required of those ministers like rebuilding the economy and safeguarding the security of Somaliland? I am disappointed with president Silanyo and his Kulmiye party because I thought that they were an educated people who knew how to run a country by enacting laws, enforcing them, and dividing responsibilities among the civil service.

     Reply
    • Kayse says:

I dont understand that too. Why is he naming his cabinet as some committee, he named the same people in over 5 so called committees. its about time he found other people and gave them jobs and stopped using the same names in every place.

Should such committee be under Hargeisa authority or local councils? Why is government collecting rubbish?

       Reply
      • Abraham says:

In real democracies like the United Kingdom, committees are composed of parliament and not cabinet ministers who have already got so much responsibilities on their plates. Typically, committees are formed by bringing together highly qualifies professionals who are elected to parliament to bring to account the different branches of the government or investigate many of the problems that arise from the economy, security, foreign policy, ethics, etc. of their country. Moreover, MPs, Senators or Congress people are selected for particular committees due to their respective expertise. In our country's case, non of the procedures for forming committees are followed, and non of the problems for which our government formed ''committees'' are relevant. I hope sooner rather than later ,our ruling elite realise that there is wisdom in learning from those who know better.

No offence intended, but you seem to have the typical African mentality which is that we Africans are incapable of sorting our own mess because we are not as developed as the rest of the civilised World. Do you also mean that we can not do what others do because we have inferior intelligence? Whether Somaliland is in Africa or on Mars, we should be able to learn from others, organise ourselves like the best nations in the World, and drop the ridiculous notion that only the West can do certain things. The reality is, what can be done in Europe can also be done in Africa if the Africans develop the right attitude.

I think this Government really cares for Somaliland, and I think it is good that the President and his cabinet should get their hands dirty and clean up the city, inorder to set a good example to the masses, but the Diasporo should do much to help also, things we can help with is voluntary work such as:

    a) Planting trees;
    b) cleaning up around area we are going to live;
    c) assisting street kids.

There is so much potential we have,

Instead of being bored, and eventually sitting and eating the evil leaf.

I can't understand either why the president would involve cabinet members with the beautification of the capital. As said above that is a local government issue. He could have called the mayer to his office and asked_him to form such a committee . are there city planners or architects in this committee,? May be that doesn't matter, because every body know how to beautify a city or a town
