Somaliland needs high quality pharmaceutical products to get rid off those scrupulous business people willing to rip-off unsuspecting poor people by selling them expired medicines.

We have to be very careful as always and with every company that decides to do business with us. Make sure that we have our own lab professionals (we have many at home and abroad) even chemists that make sure that the drugs sold to our people or even produced here dont have an adverse effect on our people and environment.

Make sure that they are not also just testing new drugs on our population that they are not offering in their home countries.

I wonder what kind of consumer protection laws Somaliland has?

Can anyone tell me where I can find it, or if we dont have any examples that we could put forward to our officials back home?

    Thanks in Advance

Very good questions. I hope our "government" can do that, i have little confidence in this administration

Unfortunately, there are no consumer protection laws in Somaliland. There is very little regulation in any sector in Somaliland. During my trip to Somaliland I was very disturbed to find that anyone can open up a pharmacy and that these pharmacies prescribe medications. You simply go into the pharmacy describe your symptoms and they give you whatever medication the feel like you need.

What I find concerning is that this is a research-based pharmaceutical company. Pharmaceutical are well known for trying out new drugs on people in Africa and Asia before trying to acquire a license in North America or Europe. I would advise caution.

Mashaalah, now Somalilanders will be sure about the medicines they buy. But our government shoud also invite Astrazeneca, Pfizer, and the rest to our country so we could get all the drugs we need.

Increasing our quality control within the Health sector and availability will improve lives thus reducing the need for people to seek from other countries. This great news. Improving the quality of life in Somaliland is essential. I would love to see the average living standards improved in other sectors too. Health, education, Social care/Community services and Housing/Shelter are all very important areas which contribute to the quality of lifes.

It is good news but I do not like Monopoly system ….why Dr. Farah the sole distributor of all Glaxo SmithKline. here comes all abuses and price fixing….Glaxo SmithKline should have open market policy.

Yes i like big pharmaceuticals to come to Somaliland….I hope our leaders will be cautious and vigilant when dealing with giant pharmaceuticals. case in point the Nigerian criminal charges against Pfizer over 1996 drug test where a lot of children died. All I'm saying is I don't want these companies to use our ppl as guinea pigs
