Somaliland: Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Mohamed Abdullahi Returns

September 29, 2011   ·   40 Comments

Dr Mohammad Omar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somaliland, is embarking on a mission to have his self-declared sovereign state recognised by the international community.

HARGEISA(SomalilandPress)—Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Abdulahi Omar returns from United State of America where he has been lobbying to push for Somaliland recognition. Dr. Omar left for United States of America two weeks ago where he was pushing for recognition from representatives from the permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Omar spoke shortly with the press at Egal International Airport’s VIP room as he give details about his trip to USA and what he was able to achieve. Dr. Omar told the press that while he was in Washington DC he was guest speak at International Republican Institute a think tank based in DC. At that event Minister said he explain to the audience about Somaliland’s achievement, its democratization and its fight against pirates and terrorism. The last part of his trip the minister met with representatives of all the countries that have a permanent seats on the UN Security Council as he explain to them Somaliland’s quest for recognition and how Somaliland is a beacon of hope in a troubled region.

Dr. Omar conclude by informing Somaliland citizens that in recent days several Somaliland news outlets have written incorrect information regarding UN envoy to Somalia ambassador Augustine Mahiga meeting with opponents of Somaliland Canada. Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed went on to say that Ambassador Augustine Mahiga met with Somaliland and Somalia residents in Canada at which point Dr. Mahiga only spoke about issues concerning Somalia and how to resolve it from its current chaos.

Thank you Dr. Mohamed for all your efforts, but don't only talk about … "Somaliland’s achievement, its democratization and its fight against pirates and terrorism." But also about the death and destruction caused by Somalia and how our country went 50 years backwards because of the ill-fated union with Somalia and how we will never, ever want to go back after resurrecting from the ashes like phoenix. and building ourselves from zero.

I think that we, Somalilanders are giving this good for nothing, publicity seeking, blowhard, individual attention and a platform he does not deserve. We should not have even dignified any thing says, let alone acknowleding him because that is what are doing.

Let me make something clear here, Somalilanders, the last paragraph of my comment is not about Dr. Omer, the Foreign Minisiter. It is though about Rashid Aw Nur who was supposedly photo taken with Dr. Mahiga for a publicity stunts – wearing a Awdalstate T-shirt! And sorry guys for any misunderstanding.

Dr. Omer is trying hard to have the world attention but at the same time, he is not very convincing by telling only half of the story in terms of what happened and why we really reverted from the ill-fated union and why we will never go back instead of just talking the progress we made.

    @ Dr. Bashe,

I do not know which way to take your comment. "he is also giving what he can" are we putting our bar too high or too low when it comes to our FM? I personally think that we must put our bar as high as possible when it comes to our FM. We need an excellent FM at this point in time – A FM minister that will put Somaliland before everything else, be it personal enrichment, publicity and other descriptions given by Gobaad.

There are rumours brewing about contracts and embezzlement of foreign aid money, which I am not ready to comment until I get all the evidence. But rest assured Somalilandpress readers will be among the first to be informed about the progress of this file.

Please do not get me wrong, I do not allege that this FM is doing anything wrong, but he and his fellow ministers should know that we are watching their performance in a very scrutinizing way, since our opposition parties are not doing their job, but instead are busy with personal insults and the elected representatives are sleeping on the wheel.

surely you are both absolutely positive in your comments as regards to what the SL FM DR. Omar in his overall quest diplomatic mission is all about. Surely Somalilanders will be more interested to know the rumours brewing about contracts and embezzlements of any kind of foreign aid money etc. Please follow
that lead and up date us on any new findings on the subject matter.

Come on lady and gents, the man seems to be doing a good job. Have any of you actually listened to his speech at the republican institute in the US. It was excellent and informing. We must understand that the majority of our western supporters and allies are now well aware of our history, struggle for independence as well as the destruction brought upon must by our would-be brothers. Therefore, when Somaliland officials are invited to speak on our young nation the audience is more interested in Somaliland's current state of affairs.

    - How is our economy?
    - How is our security?
    - Is the climate in our country conducive for foreign investment to take place ? i.e. good legal system, educated and work oriented population etc.

It is not uncommon for countries to send small delegations to attend such meetings to gauge potential investment opportunities. In the FM's case, he spoke to an audience consisting of member states with seats at the UN security council. That in itself should be taken as an honour and an achievement in itself.

So I ask, do you guys believe that Somaliland's interests would have better been served if our FM spent his time trying to scare the international community into recognizing us with old war stories and death statistics? The international community already knows Somaliland is different and special in its own right. The only thing these western countries are trying to come to grips with now is HOW special and HOW different Somailand really is. And, in my opinion, the only way we could show this is by telling them about our accomplishments. Just my opinion!

There's nothing wrong with all that you said about DR. Omar.but sir pls. don't steal the show. Gobaad excepted Mr. Yusuf comments mentioned rumours brewing embezzlements about foreign aid money etc. Besides what the Fm does shuttling around, how good is he with the Arab World specially with the GCC???. Dr. Omar has been in office for a long time now,… talking about Aids, investments, SL Passport, Scholarships, Statehood sovereignty recognition, and on and on, how much progress Dr. Omar achieved so far on these and many more diplomatic issues???. I know Dr. Omar is fluent in both English and Somali but is he good enough
as well in the Arabic Language for dealing with the Arab World specially the GCC???
There are other rumours that his Ministry is filled with a bunch of cheap diplomatic corps both inside
      and overseas..
      Cheers.

I just don't believe in witch hunts! So and so is this, he is lazy, just there for the money and lime light etc. The man has a MA and PHD in his field …what more could an unrecognized state ask for? Why don't we just work with him instead of looking for different ways to cook him loool

However, if SL is to progress and prosper meaningful critics must always be there not only
for DR Omar's case and his Ministry but accross the SL as a whole. I mean throughout the
entire SL arena including the stupid Media what have you. Out of all the bad things the Media is
mainly to blame for being the most dangerous part for not showing impartial reporting educational
news to the Public audiences. The Media needs to educate itself to educate the Public about
all issues in a way not dangerous to the security and wellbeings of the Country and the Nation.
With now the Majority Isaaq in the Presidency top Post of the Country after AHN Cigaal, let's observe

Somalia is not a legitimate country. It is a pseudo state which is held together or apart by the international such as AU, IGAD, UNPOS AMISOM etc. There is no reason legal or otherwise for Somaliland to remain unrecognised with the absence of a legitimate central government by its citizens. Somaliland needs to insist on its position by pushing its status now before its too late. Somaliland must attend all the international observed meetings for stakeholders and insist that the international community cannot ignore our recognition nor can it continue to probe up a interim government who has very little power if any.

All this softly softly approach where we plead with the international community is long overdrown and its time we take a firm footing.

I also think the president over reacted and threw a live saver for these guys who were already politically drown.

I hope these guys will now think twice before they personally attack the president and will understand that they have attracted enough attention to their political weakness.

In regard with the media we all know that the previous President used to silence them by throwing them in jail. This President promised them free speech, but it seems that some of the media outlet do not understand what a free speech means or the integrity of a good story. They would write anything. So, there is a law and a protocol in terms of what they are allowed to write and what are not allowed to write and if they cross the line, do not put them in jail, but rather hit them hard where it hurts – and that is their pockets, a heavy fine whenever they put out a falsehood story or try to smear somebody reputation. I believe that would teach them a lesson.

About ina Cali Waraabe, I don't know anything about his history with Siyaad Barre's, but don't like the way he talks. Hadalka kama fiirsado. Waa laclac, waanu ku dacdac badan yahay and I personally don't think that he is a good politician. Sorry, Abti!

Those fitna insurgents, parasites never touch or say a word of their corrupted clanship officials.
Let me tell you this: I don't believe a late midnight interview took place…why so late is bogus cuz it could
be anytime during the day time. However, the bottom line is, if indeed the President uttered such
vulgar language then it should be true. Why cuz Presidents don't say something they don't mean to say.

I wouldn't say he way out of line, but I would say that the President lost his cool and shouldn't have to because it wasn't very Presidential at all. All are important key player in the regional affairs. He is apparently on phone call foe most of them This shows he use this important and personal relationship to promote Somaliland interest which he is doping remarkable well.
