Somaliland: Election date annouced while ID cards are handed out

May 14, 2010   ·   15 Comments

The new biometric voter ID cards have been distributed to their rightful owners days after arriving from the Republic of South Africa. These new cards were issued after the previous system including voter ID cards and voter registration list were abused. They contained many errors and the use of under aged kids as well as duplications.

The new cards have marked a new milestone in Somaliland democracy and their distribution will continue in the coming days throughout Somaliland. The cards were printed by Face Technology and has so far pleased the Somaliland public.

Hundreds of thousands of cards have been already handed out in Hargeisa, Burao and Berbera. Distribution will begin soon in the towns of Borama, Erigavo, Las Anod and Gabiley.

The new cards are designed to eliminate or minimize voter registration frauds and double voting. About 1.1 million Somalilanders who are eligible to vote will vote for one party among the three existing parties. Meanwhile, the National Electoral Commission has announced the official Presidential election date. Somaliland will go to the polls 26 June 2010. The day 26 June has significant meaning in Somaliland – in 1960, it was the same day that the nation gained it’s independence from Great Britain.

This will be the first time Somaliland will use biometric cards for it’s presidential elections and is one of the few African states to do so despite not been recognized. The handout of cards will continue for the next seven days.

- END (this is just a quick update as we are moving to new servers, once this process is complete, we will write all the stories and latest news).

I am very pleased with the work of the current NEC — they are highly compotent and efficient. I don't know any Electoral commission that can do all they have done in that short time since their election.

I congratulate the new chairman and it's upto him now to complete the job on 26 June. It is also upto president Rayale to sign the date as soon as possible (this week), otherwise all Somaliland will kick him out.

Let's support the remarkable work of our new NEC, I am sure now so many want them dead (those oppose to Somaliland and democracy in the region), including al shabaab.

Let's protect them and make this a smooth election like no other in the region.

We just made it history in our own democratic process.

Hopefully the new UK government will double it's effects in Somaliland, I know Mr Cameron is a fan of Somaliland.

I feel like I’m a new born baby and I can’t utter in words how proud I’m and my country to be one the few countries that have biometric card voting.
My advice to my beloved citizens is to keep and stay up nights how to carry on the security of this orphan state , and sustain their efforts of up warding our country, I wish all Somaliland citizens will one day gain their thoughts.

Security matters we need to secure all the borders, all polling stations from Somalia's extremist rebels, tribal militants and the so called NSUM in Sool.

We need to deal them harshly and not allow them to interupt our democracy and I hope the international community gets behind Somaliland provides more funding for security, transportations and provide intelligence.

Somaliland will make history on 26 June, 50th anniversary and first biometric election.

    Let's go Somaliland.

NEC are in the right path until now, but UDUB will make sure to derail what we fought for, if the population is not mature enough to be vigilant and forthcoming for the last hurdle of our democracy. Diasporas should all go home and help our people to succeed this noble task. I wish all Somaliland people a successful voting and deciding whoever they want to rule the country in the next five years [only those who will respect their term of office and not those who accustomed to delay elections]. Somaliland will succeed in developing the homegrown democracy and cultural heritage they have married, and become the "The Best Kept Secret" of all time.

    Election Time

It is election Time; yes it is good to hear that we will have our long waited election. Did you make your mind and think on who you will give your vote too?? You should thing twice and look to who is running for this election first; look closely to what that candidate will offer to the country not just for himself and his immediate family. Asking him what his vision, what his plans does he have a plan to improve our country, and does he have plans on how to solve all problems that we have?

We should thing at large as Somali Landers, not by our individual tribe, don’t say I am from that tribe and the candidate is from the same tribe so I will vote for him, even if he doesn’t have any vision or plan, please think twice before you do that… We should be one nation and one people, we should be Somalilanders. Forget about tribe, we should thing as a citizen of Somaliland so we progress.

If we want to achieve recognition we need to work hard to improve our country, we need to have all necessary things to be a country, we need to have, electricity, water hospitals, good roads, good education, strong legislations, recreation centers, and all other basic things that our humble families should have.

Our candidate should be creative, he should find ways to create jobs to our citizen, and he should try to find alternatives and solutions to the thousands of Somaliland citizen who doesn’t have any jobs. Our Candidate should fight what they called “Gat” I am sure this is what makes our people lazy, less productive, and it is the main reason that our men forget about their families, most of their time they spend eating or Jaw “Gat”. Our candidate should have a good plan on how to eliminate or stop this bad habit from our society, so our people become more productive.

If you think about this and just look closely how many millions we are give to Ethiopia monthly from “Gat”, you will get upset, why our government allow that, why they didn’t s stop that. It is a question needs an answer, and I hope someone will answer me.

Lastly, I hope from the elected president that he will look after his people think wisely on how to lift up our country.

Wisely said. Hate this think called "KAT" makes people lazy, unproductive and useless, and can get any work done in the afternoons.

Sadly, it is, also, connected to the Somali culture, because, after lunch this is what our men do!!!!!! Or if you have to invite somebody, the "Kat" session is a must.

It is a sort of pastime, now what can we do about the older generation who are so addicted to it………….I!!!!

Great feeling here in SL!! I'll sure be going somewhere great on June 26. I'll cast my vote to whom I put my trust. (Many) and I, know that neither of the parties are perfect, but we have to cast the votes and move on.

Let us all cherish this great moment, and say a little prayer for our country and its people.

    Long Live SOMALILAND.
