BERBERA (SomalilanddPress)–Berbera Manager of TOTAL Oil Mer Rouge and other staff have been
detained by Somaliland Authorities after they refused to transfer the
management to the government, Somaliland Police commander said on
Wednesday.
Somaliland President Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo revoked the TOTAL
licence to manage oil storage in Berbera saying, “I have decided that
starting from 22 May, 2011, management of Berbera Oil storage facility
will by the Somaliland Government.” President Silanyo said in
presidential statement issued on 22 May, 2011. “The Ministerial
Commission would be in charge, including; Commerce Minister and
Foreign Minister,” he added.
TOTAL Oil Mer Rouge Manager Mr. Saád Elmi, his Accountant Abdikarim
Hussein Elmi and his driver have since been jailed by Police after
they declined to transfer the running of the oil company to
Government. The Somaliland Police Commander, Elmi Robleh Furreh told
Journalists in Hargeisa.
Mr. Furreh added that three other men were also imprisoned after they
tried to organize a demonstration against the TOTAL manager’s arrest.
Lately, there has been an increase in the price of oil across the
self-declared republic. TOTAL had not been buying the highly valued
commodity for the last two years. It is this that contributed to the
oil shortage. (Editing by Diana Ngila)
