Burao 2011: Clean sweep for Marodi Jeeh State

BURAO — The Somaliland national youth games concluded this week in Burao with Marodi Jeeh State sweeping the top five individual places for the Cross Country on Saturday.

At least seven of the top ten hailed from Marodi Jeeh in the 10-km championship race.

Jamal Abdi Diriye crossed the finish line first with a time of 32:08 for Marodi Jeeh. Abdullahi Muse Shaqale (Marodi Jeeh) followed with a time of 33:41. The third place belonged to also Marodi Jeeh runner, Khalid Ali Ibrahim with an impressive time of 33:57 and Mohamed Hassan Nageye ‘Baney’ and Abdirahman Dayib Aw-Hassan followed next giving Marodi Jeeh a clean-sweep of the championship.

Mohamud Saeed Salah came in sixth for Sanaag State followed by another Marodi Jeeh runner, Abdiwahab Ibrahim Farah. More than 100 youths from all regions of Somaliland took part in the event.

The host city Burao hailed the two-week long event as a success and thanked all the participants, coaches, athletes and states. The event was co-organized by Somaliland Ministry of Sports and culture, the city of Burao and Somaliland Athletic Federation.

If the sport is developed in the country Somaliland runners are poised to take on regional powerhouses such as Ethiopia and Kenya. Somaliland has already produced one of the world’s current best distance runner Mo Farah.

Marodi Jeeh State also saw them take out the basketball championship title after they defeated Haud 65 – 54.

Haud State football team looks to redeem itself on Sunday when they take on the undefeated Marodi Jeeh football team in Burao’s main Alamzi stadium. The two teams are both from group A and clashed just days ago which saw Maroodi Jeeh defeat the new state 2 – 0. Somalilanders are eagerly waiting who will win the title later today.

I am proud of Somaliland and my two states (Haud and MJ). I am hoping Haud will win the soccer tournament later today. This year Maroodi J. was definitely a strong state winning the marathon, basketball and in the finals for the soccer.

The other poor states must be crying including the host Togdheer…wiwiwiwwiwiw..

The picture above says alot. Peaceful Somaliland on the move in an open space free of Somalia's chaotic culture and famine.

We are proud of this nation and our youth. We need to do more for the sports and make our games regional games for all by increasing prizes, rehabilitating the venues and creating a sport champion nation and culture.

People have myth about Somaliland youth and in particular Maroodi Jeex, they claim they qat addicts but this domination says otherwise.

Kayse, I didn't know that you are from Hawd. I am too from both Maroodi Jeeh and Hawd. I am Also happy for Maroodi Jeeh's success, but am very proud for all Somalilanders achievements, including the host region.

The government promote and put emphasis on sports acitivities to keep youth busy, focused on sports so that they can compete on international level and also to be distracted from joining the Shabaab terrorists or getting lost in the sea.

Congratulations Maroodi Jeeh and good job to all the organizers, players, participants, coaches.
