Somaliland cops arrest ‘bombers’

HARGEISA (Somalilandpress) — Somaliland police arrested 11 people in possession of firearms and explosives on Thursday in the breakaway republic but lost one officer killed in the raid, a spokesperson said.

“They had explosives and other materials that are used for bomb making. There were seven men and four women with the hallmark of trouble makers,” the spokesperson for the police force in Burao where the raid took place told journalists.

“The material was for suicide attacks; some of the arrested are suspected to be potential suicide bombers,” he said, adding that police “were following the group after tips from local people”.

Those arrested attempted to resist when police launched their raid. An exchange of gunfire ensued in which one police officer was killed and two others wounded, the spokesperson said.

Burao is the second-largest city in Somaliland, which broke away from the rest of Somalia in May 1991 but has not yet been recognised by the outside world.

Somaliland has scheduled June 26 as the date for presidential elections, already postponed three times since 2008.

A recent internal UN report, a copy of which was seen by AFP, said there was a risk of suicide attacks on hotels or other buildings housing international observers monitoring the June 26 elections.

The report also spoke of the recent arrival in Somaliland of nine young men trained by the Shebaab to carry out suicide attacks.

In October 2008, 24 people, including UN staff, were killed in Hargeysa in a suicide attack for which the Shebaab claimed responsibility.

  1. Maalin says:

I commend the residents of Burao for being vigilant
and informing the cops who acted with utmost speed
in rounding up those criminals. Keep up the good work!!!
Condolences to the family & friends of the deceased officer.

  2. Gobaad says:

Somalilanders have to be vigilant and to look out for suspicious activities such as people who disappeared and suddenly re-appeared. Unknown people who are spending large amount of money for renting houses and buying cars, people with niqaabs.

Praise to those people who discovered the suspicious activities of those ‘shaydaan duufsey’ individuals who want to harm Somalilanders and alerted the authority. Well done folks and well done to our brave Police and Military who are giving their lives for their country. Keep being the eyes and the ears of your Country. Long Live Somaliland!

Our heartfelt condolences for the fallen Officer and speedy recovery for those injured.

  3. faisal says:

There is nothing much to say here except Somalilanders to be vigilant,, and responsibilities lies on the civilian not the government,, every family or parent should report to the police if they their son or family member is missing or suspected to move south Somalia and joined any terror group.

  4. jama says:

The silence of Kulmiye leaders on this issue is defening. Farroole captain of pirateland said recently during an interview that he negotiated a settelment with Kulmiye that after the elections when Kulmiye wins they will pull the Somaliland troops out of Laascaanood Sool and Sanaag.

    • nasir says:

i wonder if kulmiye party wins elections how war on terror will succeed and how Somaliland mission for border closure will accomplish too.!!!
by the way they should break silence and condemn this brutal attempt like ucid party did today.

    • HMObsiye says:

This is nonsense, no leader can dare to pull or do anything that can harm the security and border of Somaliland. The Somaliland people will never accept an individual be it Siranyo, Feisal or Dahir, make decision without their full input that can reverse the gain they made for over 19 years. Whoever tries to do otherwise, will commit a political suicide.

    • Naliye says:

The silence of UDUB leaders on this issue is also disturbing, because last I checked Police men and Military officers are nonpartisan, could UDUB pressure police to allow terrorist carry out attacks to disturb the elections.

Dahir Riyale said in a recent interview that he will give Saylac to Djibouti for a big chunk of money, since the crowning of the the Issa Sultan was a first step towards that goal.

      disturbing indeed !

  5. Gobaad says:

Wax walba ka yaab. UDUB party leaders are desperate that they could possibly resort to desperate act such as this to yet delay the election. But it will back fire on them big time.

  6. omararm says:

The main thing is the security of Somaliland:
We knew tha our highness president was exnational security Service officer, but i don't know why don't he make a use of experience, or he don't want to. What I mean is the security of the main cities are completly loose, you will find hundereds and hundereds of the southern around the main city of hargeisa the capital of Somaliland, no body knows what they are doing, how and when they have entered this country and why? Although the somalilanders aware of the aoutherns and they will notify to nearest police station if suspect any body for such a matter, I heard that there are many informers around but i think they were assigned to inform special things, they were instructed to ignore all the other matters except their presidential assignements.

  7. Gobaad says:

Some of them ordinary people escaping from the chaos in Somalia. Other are really up to no good. They are spies, sleeper cells and Terrorists who are waiting for a chance to harm Somaliland. And I believe that our president is part of the problems and not part of the solutions.

He certainly is not using his security experts to keep the country safe. If he is loyal he would have beefed up the security around the borders. But he is allowing border areas unguarded vulnerable to infiltrators to easily sneak into the country.
