BERBERA(SomalilandPress)—Hundreds of students from Bursade High School located in the heart of Berbera city have decided to protest conditions they say range from the lack of teachers in their school, unsafe school building conditions and not having any school materials in the city’s only high school. It appears that students decided to demonstrate once they returned to a school that had no teachers that were promised to them by the administration before they head off for the summer holidays. The police did not stop the students but they monitored the situation from distance.

Bursade High School is the only high school that is located in the city of Berbera and it has been neglected by both the local government and the department of education according to one of the parent of a students. The demonstration is the most recent indication that resident of Berbera are fed up and are no longer accepting the short end of the stick that their city is getting from the government.
SomalilandPress reporter Abdinasir Liban was able to speak with one of the student during the demonstration. “We can no longer wait on false promises from school administrations” said pupil Khadar Ahmed.

Students and parents are expecting to meet with the governor of Saahil State Mr. Mohamud Ali Saleeban (Ramaax) later today, Mr. Ramaax who was recently appointed to this difficult position is seen as a new hope for the city and the state.

The new Administration should address the concerns of the school and the students and make some changes to improve the conditions.

It is a sad news indeed, I was one of the first students graduated from that school while it was newly built, three years old, in 1985.

I am saddened by this as we are nation that loves education and have been educated by parents who did not access formal education themselves, we are determined yet do not invest on the very great thing we hold so close to our hearts, I am sad and amazed that the Berbera region has been neglected like this.

its good thing that, the students are not accepting substandard education, as this will affect their future ,however i suspect any minor improvement by the new regime will be hailed as a major improvement, even if they just paint few walls. because the previous administration set the par so low. therefore they should not settle any thing below the general standers of the other main cities ie Hargeisa burao

There are no lack of teachers, but in reality there is lack of funding. Teachers are attracted by the private schools in Hargeisa, where they get good salary. I am sure if the ministry of education pays the teachers well they will be there. The same report is coming from Sanag, especially Erigavo, where the reports are saying the only public high school in Erigavo is not functioning due to lack of funds/salary for teachers. I do hope the going will get better soon.

The city of Berbera has being neglected for many years not only in education but also in many other aspects. It is sad that the people of Somaliland do not realize the importance of this city. This city has many resources and is in a strategic location. The port of Berbera is being neglected, the airport is not being to its full capacity. If the new administration is going to make some real changes they will look at the resources of the country and manage it in a way that benefits the citizens of Somaliland. I hope this new administration realizes that there are resources in the country that are easily accessible and do not need outside help. for example the fishing industry. the government needs to start investing in this industry, and making use of the different resources that are available to us.

Well, I guess you can't please everybody. People will always complain and demand. The current administration needs to stick to its mandate and compromises, fulfilling it one region at a time. Wixii kalena ee xad dhaaf ahna dhega ka daboosha! As they say: Rome was not built overnight. Wa Billaahi Tawfiiq.

Berbera region should demand equal share of its resources, then it will do what Romans did to Roma.

Berbera has been neglected for years. It is not only education whcih has suffered over the years for poor management and lack of investement. One may wonder why Berbera which generates so much to Somaliland treasury is so neglected?
In Berbera the roads are very poor, there is no running water, hospitals are poorly equiped and poorly managed as well as lack of essential medicines. The people of SAXIL have neglected their city, their children's education and their hospitals. It is time Berbera to stand for its right to keep its revenue rather than handing every penny to the central goverment. It is time to say no to the central government. It is time SAXIL people stand for their right. It is time to act democratically and decide for yourselves rather than waiting the government to decide for you.

There are two issues in stake here: 1, there is lack of teachers because they're not being paid well by the local gov't (education system). 2. there are to many private schools and these schools are taking the only qualified teachers who were teaching @ public schools are paying them well. Their needs to some sort of regulations on the private schools because it's ruining the public schools as people don't trust them and feel that their child isn't getting good education there. I swear Hargeisa issues are similar to what's happening in the US now.
