Somaliland: Aviation Minister says Borama City Airport will begin operations soon

September 23, 2010   ·   17 Comments

Hargeisa (Somalilandpress) –Minister of Aviation Mohamud Hashi Abdi today took a day trip to Borama City the capital of Awdal State. The Minister was accompanied by delegates from the government which consisted of Director General of Minister of Aviation Ali Obsiiye, Department of Transportation and Civil Service Director Ibrahim Muse and few other cabinet members.

The Minister and his delegates met with officials from local and provincial government, students and elders from Awdal State at Ray Hotel. After a private meeting with local officials Minister Abdi held a press conference at Ray Hotel where he spoke about the government’s agenda to rehabilitate Borama Airport. Borama Airport has not function for the last decade and residents of the Awdal State have been wondering when the government was going to come around to it. Mr. Abdi went farther to say “the government and I are committed to the rehabilitation of Borama City Airport; Awdal citizens should not have to fly to Hargeisa or Berbera on their way to Borama.” Also for the first time Aviation Minister Mohamud Abdi inform the audience that his office’s also plans to rehabilitate Buroa City Airport and Kalabaydh Airport which currently are not functioning at all. This came surprise to the audience since neither one of these three airports has been used for years and requires a major rehabilitation which most resident are not sure where the government will the funds from.

Currently anyone who is flying into Somaliland has to use either Berbera Airport or Egal International Airport located in the capital Hargeisa and therefore it is a hustle for those that have to drive from either one of these airports on their way to Buroa or Borama.

On another note the Minister praised the people of Awdal region for the role which they played in notifying the government of the ONLF trained militia that illegally came into the country via Somaliland coastal water. It was the local residents of Awdal who reported the incident to the government and therefore should be recognized for their courage’s effort. He requested that Awdal resident be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the government.

Let's face it, Burao is the 2nd Capital of the Jsl. and Borama is equally important
Capital City of the Awdal County. That said, if the new Minister is already showing
signs to do something… sounds good enough…let's welcome and
    live upto… seeing this done.
    Cheers.

It would have been a good idea to build all three airports, but the questions is who is funding this huge project? The minister has to explain how this can be possible? we are tired of many promises from the previous government and nothing came true. Is this the same old promises?

I believe that Borama Airport will managed and financed by Samaroon how about Burco Airport, I guess the minister him self is from Burco, what we know that is that he have looted the only fire truck available in Burco and took it to Berbera without any replacement and three days after a complete village caught fire, Burco is the only orphan city. Burco is badly requiring actual help, let us join together and generate Brother of Burco. Cheers

the sad thing is that some people of Awdal dont want to be part of Somaliland because of qabil. Somaliland is for everone who wants to live in peace.

The awdals think they can build there own nation!

I really dont care if Awdalians support SL or not the thing I want to see is they doing something for themselves and for them to know Hargeisa is not a totalitarian regime and cry and blame us for everything like the ones from Las Anod.

      They can support whatever.

Hm im kind of skeptic. We all have heard of the billion dollar investment in energy and all kind of promises. I dont belive this for a dime. That said SL is a third world coountry and it's budget lies around 60 million dollars witch is nothing compared to the size and population. Even if they would have money. It's should go to road projects linking the city's together. I dont think they would mind landing on a good airport with good roads to their city's. Instead of landing on horrible airports and driving on dirt roads.

it doesnt make any Sense to me whether the Samarons stand alone for their own state or the Isaks also, all what i need is to see a Somali recongnized state internally and externally (respectfull state).
