1:45 am on the 17th June 2012 armed thugs also known as the RRU forces invaded our family home in the Ibrahim Koodbur area of Hargeisa. Our home is the oldest home in this quite residential area and resides opposite (13m) the Ibrahim Koodbur police station. A police station my father and owner of the house Mr Hassan Aw Libah built many years ago, in addition, to this date he still supports the upkeep and maintenance out of his love for his country and profound belief in law and order. And my four children were born in the UK. My husband and wanted to raise our children in our home land, where we have invested n business and infrastructure alike.
This militia used ladders to jump over our gate broke in to the house with such inconceivable violence and smashed our doors, family heirlooms, furnishings, cupboards and beds. They all ransacked and stole our belongings. They broke into the private bedrooms of my sleeping children, aunt and cousins. They forced the women outside and made them sit in the middle of the night in the freezing cold weather, and to sit on the concert floor outside. Our house has a quest house and a large Mutula ( Garden house) on our grounds, both were ransacked by this militia and yet still cruelly enough the women were forced to stay outside dressed only in their night wear and refused permission to collect their Islamic coverings or even a blanket, jumper or coat to keep them warm. My six year old daughter and two year old son woke up with all the commotion. My children opened there eyes to see a torch and gun pointed at them. They screamed and began to run outside only to be yelled at by the militia. They allowed them to join the women but with sheer malice kept them outside in the cold surrounded by the armed guards. These guards where well prepared for the cold , they had on balaclavas heavy jackets and boots yet forced a two year old and six year old to stand outside in the cold dressed in pajamas without even so much as a jumper. My daughter has been seriously affected by this and for the past few nights has had nightmares and awakes screaming. Inshallah this will pass and she will be ok.
Staying in our home was two male guests, and our family watchman. All three men were detained and taken to a police station on the furthest part of town. Not once during this horrific incident did these armed thugs produce a warrant for this illegal search. They did not speak to anyone and explain why they were in our home, nor did they care to articulate what they were looking for.
They stole private possessions, passports, mobile phones, laptops, and even my children’s PSP game, cash in Dollars and Dirhams. They even took a small amount of Somaliland Shillings left out on the kitchen table.
They destroyed our fridge our water tank our mango trees growing in the garden on the sides of the wall. They tried to break in to our family safe which was where I and my mother kept our gold but Alahmdulliah did not succeed. The Chief of police and his deputy visited the house and witnessed with their own eyes the damage these thugs did, and yet had the audacity to state of international television no damage was done. Allah almighty is all knowing and all seeing and knows the truth.
Your minister of interior stated on the 19 June 2012 in a one to one with my husband they were acting of false and faulty information. And that I quote “This was no means targeted at the family” This beggars belief and makes me ask then who were you targeting? This was a family home, built fifteen years ago. And surely any police service worth its salt check and thoroughly investigates before carrying out such an attack. Thirdly any fool involved in suspicious activity would do so as far away from the police as possible and not be in a house opposite a police station with a family renowned for their honesty integrity and enough nationalism to build a institution of law and order to service and entire community.
Mr. President this was the same house that you yourself used to chew chaat and sit with senior members of kulimiye and my father. This is the same family that hosted you in London during your service under the Barre government Egal government and more recently when you were looking for political financial support. Have you forgotten our families generous contribution to the Kulimye party during your many years in opposition, Was our home not an extension of your own, have you not known me personally since I was a small girl in London. Yet your government decided to forget our lengthy relationship and uses armed thugs to terrorize us and destroy our private property. Shame on you and shame on your ruthless government for terrorizing women and children.
I am not naïve enough to think you are aware of everything that goes on under your rule, but responsibility is an enormous burden were you rejoice in success and own up to failures and mistakes.
What I had hoped and am utterly disappointed by is your governments lack of responsibility, mistakes can happen and only allah subhana wa taala is perfect, but you on a personal level and your government on a professional level should accept full responsibility for this disastrous mistake and make the necessary amends. We have tried in vain to search for the truth as to why this happened and only to be faced with empty answers, and more and more lies and we did not know? That is only if we are to expect justice transparence and accountability from this government, if not then we are to expect Somaliland to follow many African countries bad doctorial example and become Africa’s newest police state run by armed thugs and bandits. When we as the Somaliland people had higher aspiration of becoming Africa’s newest democracy.
Yours
Hodan Hassan Aw liabah

this barbaric action comitted by Duur and s'laanyo special dayday force (RRU) reminded me of the brutal tactics or force of siyaad barre's hangash army.
Special Daydaty Forces (SDF), that's a good one!!!
This family is a good family who I truly am shocked to hear of thier ordeal. I truly hope they will be compensated duly and they will be given a very heartfelt apology for the error. As a Somalilander I know our current political vision will mean some unwanted and unwarranted exposure to all the is going on in Somalia. Thus, I wish our government to be mature enough to realise these political ambitions are affecting ordinary and more importantly patriotic citizens of Somaliland. Our community must realise with every change of our political endevours their will come risks and such risks are the ones of the government who are responsible for the peace and security of its citizens. Such actions are an unfortunate and regrettable to say the least thus warrant fair compensation and apology.
If they acted on false information. Then, I can only guess that our government openess to multiparty as well as representations within the government will mean more problems. Problems we may not have had before. This is indeed something we were warned of by many within our community and it shows itself by this error. Even though we are more vigilant they still manage to loose due to wrong information from whom???
Libah is a good man who worked had and now wishes to enjoy life with his grand-kids, relatives and the fresh air of hargeisa. You are doing the right thing by writing to Silanyo and asking them to cooperate and answer you questions.
If Silaanyo doesn't respond you can always sue him in a British court because your both British citizens and thus under its jurisdiction.
The damages include any travel costs including hotels, food because he is the one who invaded your private home using British taxpayers money thus its the British court systems responsibility to ensure that British taxpayers money is not misused if the government (FCO) failed to do its job.
You are asking for your things back your not asking for anything else.
I recommend that you sue them for harassment, pain caused, tell the court you almost had a heart attack because this was a clear declaration of war…invading your home and your family including children.
You have a case against Silaanyo and the British foreign Department, who are funding another tribal war in north Somalia. Their arms are already displacing hundreds in Buhoodle, Kalshaale, Las Anod, Dilla, New Hargeisa.
Silaanyo is also wanted for crimes against humanity in eastern regions of Somaliland, so before he becomes another Omar al-Bashir, I advise him to stop invading others and breaking into people's homes.
Such will not be tolerated any more because as you know, it was us including you Mr Silaanyo who toppled Siad Bare from the Diaspora, you are no immune should your abuses continue.
Mr Libah deserves peace of mind, his material things will be recovered but will Silanyo guarantee he will not invade his home again or others using British taxpayers money?
Libah's relatives should also write to the likes of Alun Michael, MP, and his friends.
This is not new in Hargeisa, the same forces rampaged the home of upper house (Guurti) member Hon. Ahmed Dirir Ali without a warrant and no official apology was given to him. At that time the orders were signed by Gaboose, then the interior minister, Zamzam, the current Minister for education.
The immunity granted by the constitution to the Hon. Ahmed Dirir Ali were breached.
I believe certain rogue officials are targeting the best among us and this mal-treatment of innocent citizens must come to an end. Those responsible for these despicable actions must be brought to justice.
Due to the sensitive security issues both inside and outside, the Somaliland Govt has every
right to maintain law and order in the country's affairs. However, this open letter to the President should properly investigate the RRU forces side for having taken such actions against this
dual Uk/SLD citizenship?
Cheers.
I am extremely sorry about what happened to Hassan Aw-libah's family.
At the same time I am disappointed at the response made by many readers of this site. Armed militia does not operate here in Somaliland. these are the security forces and if they made mistakes we have the right to contact their commanders and government officials. The mother whose children have been traumatized can write emotionally but the other readers had better write their opinions in responsible way.
We should avoid using defamatory terms such tribalist and war criminal as Hon. Silanyo is the elected president by Somaliland people who deserves to be respected.
We have the right to seek explanations or apology from the government why they behaved such cruelty that the family are complaining of but strong terms such legal proceedings seem a haste now.
On the other hand Somaliland is not so chaotic that its citizens are shot dead in the bush.
MISTAKES? Are you having a laugh? They committed a crime mate.
As the lady rightly said, only Allah is perfect. mistakes are for humans however, remedial measures have to be taken by the government and if not and instead continues doing such heedless acts on its own citizens it won't be much before the government looses its legitimacy from the society
I believe the lady is exaggerating the damages. Door(s) is/are broken seems plausible but I cannot buy the RRU have stolen family belongings. She also calls the Special Forces militia and yet claims she is a renowned nationalist. There is something fishy in this story.

You should be ashamed of yourself! If this was your mother you wouldn't said she is exaggerating, and yet you seem to say that when it comes to this lady. You are bias, who seem to defend the so called 'Special Forces'' militias blindly! It would have been nice of this ha happened to you. Because instead of having sympathy for this lady and what has been committed to her family, you call her a liar indirectly!!
@ Lafayste or your other name @inayuusuf do you think this well respected family who built a police station deserve this treatment????
yes
