HARGEISA — Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, Ambassador Augustine P. Mahiga, arrived in Hargeisa, Somaliland on Wednesday.
The ambassador and his delegation were warmly greeted at Egal International Airport by Foreign Minister, Dr. Mohamed Abdullahi Omar, newly appointed Information Minister, Mr. Ahmed Abdi Habsade and Chief of Cabinet, Mr. Hersi Ali H. Hassan.
Amb. Mahiga told reporters in the VIP room that the United Nation plans to open regional offices in Hargeisa to help address local issues and needs. He did not specify the type of offices or number of staff but he said he will be in the country for the next two days to discuss a draft plan with the concerning bodies.
He was led away to the Presidential palace where he is expected to hold talks with senior government members, lawmakers and opposition groups. In the next phase, he is expected to hold talks with aid agencies operating in the country and NGOs. He will also discuss the current drought in the country.
After June elections in 2010, the United Nation said it was stepping up its engagement with Somaliland and will transfer some of its offices from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, to Hargeisa.
The Somaliland government said they welcome that change in attitude and the office. Prior to its announcement, the UN carried out a security assessment and said Somaliland was safe for its staff and for international dignitaries to visit.
Somaliland declared the restoration of its independence in 1991 after a union with neighboring Somalia failed after a bloody civil war that killed more than 50,000 Somalilanders. For the last twenty years, it has been improving its security, democratic institutions and stability despite not receiving international recognition.

UN is very useless and corrupt organization. The reason we are doing well after 20 years is because we do not rely so much on that useless organization controlled by few for their own interest.
We do not want nor need a UN office in Hargeisa. We survived and did well for twenty years without you, go to somewhere where your actually needed.
UN brings corruption, political interference, security issues (people like to target them because they discriminate against so many so they have lots of enemies).
Last time al shabaab bombed their little compoud in Hargeisa…whatever it was UNDP, UN-Useless-body.
Go back to Nairobi, NBI police loves getting bribed.
I fully support your comments Mr. Kayse. Why the body who knows more of Somaliland still insists that we are part of the failed state of Somalia. Our statehood in 1960 was born in their premises and everybody in this while world knows that. Why we need their offices in Hargeisa, while they ignore our rights. Let Mr. Mahiga and Ban Ki Moon go to hell, until they change their attitude towards the "Best Kept Secret in Africa".
How long we shall entertain deal with this body who does not believe out of ignorance that we have re-claimed our statehood and we are not secessionists.
Their offices should be conditional to one thing and one thing alone; Somaliland indepedence otherwise they can go back to their corrupted friends in Nairobi or whatever they are in this world
Amb. Mahiga must realise that Somaliland is not Somalia and Hargeisa is definitely not Nairobi. The UN is the real problem and needs to be totally changed if the poor nations of the world are to survive. The way the UN is denying Somaliland's right to exist as independent is a naked aggression that should not be tolerated. Somaliland's friendliness and neutral diplomacy should not open pandora box for reunion or federal system with Somalia. Bottom line this is what Amb.Mahiga is campaigning hiding Somaliland's sovereignty under the carpet. One must learn from what is happening in the Arab World and should not underestimate what Somaliland has achieved over the last 20 years. Somaliland has achieved a dream that the Arab world just has realised to adopt. Somalia is a failed state while Somaliland is here to stay. The UN can not see its own problems somehow. The UN Leadership is becoming like that of the Arab Nations and and should either step down or restructure their leadership to meet the real demands of the new world vision for peace, democray and prosperity. The EU should be wiser too and should know better.
I could not agree more with the comments made by fellow Somalilanders — we don't need the UN and its ilk. It is a corrupt institution that can only breed corruption.
the dream of somalidiid is dead, wake up people.
Let me correct you there; the dream of Somaliweyn is dead that's right!
the dream of somaliweyn is dead, this is the new world order somaliland to stay for ever free and forever moving foeward
your words are good example of what you are. Hate and jealousy will never take you anywhere and thats what destroyed your somalia. believe me we somalilanders will never let your type send us back in timess. wake up people are planning to settle in the moon yet you sound to be behind times.
To SSCSomalia,
I think you mean your ridiculous and self-contradictory argument — that is, SSC is fighting for "Somali unity" — has been exposed, intellectually demolished and is on its last gasp.
To Hargeysawi-inlondon
Hargeysa the 2nd Capital of Somalia, get used to it pal, please seperate Fantasy and reality, I am sure eventually you will wake up from the deep sleep. Hargeysa is Somalia, SSC is Somalia, Puntland is Somalia, Galmudug is Somalia. Somalia One nation Under Allah Indivisible.
I have a simple question for you, matey, “if Hargeisa is the second capital of Somalia, why is it that your president [Sharif] is holed up inside the world's worst hellhole?
IN simple terms if AMB.Mahiga's motive is the US 3 track policy that bogus counterproductive
policy should be rejected by the Somaliland Republic Sovereign State. Somaliland doesn't
recognize the existence of Puntland as a state which's an integral part of Somalia proper without Somaliland proper…only a 2 track state policy should be the goal policy of the Somaliland.
Therefore in this regard I don't see any problem if the UN wants to open its offices in Somaliland.
The most important thing is that Somaliland must be very clear about her foreign policies.
Cheers.
no one said ssc is fighting for somali unity. SSC is fighting for dhulbahante land, which is part of Somalia.somalidiid has been exposed by the telephone leaks, the whole of somalia and the world knows the tribal thinking of your so called country.
You need to make your mind up, my friend. Flip flopping is a sign of desperation.
may god bless somaliland
Kayse,
I have noticed that you have a very bad attitude. Somaliland's achievements came through hardwork, dedication and patience and not by hotheadedness and idle critisisms. I support those that we elected to continue engaging the international organizations and international community. Setting up UN offices will be beneficial to Somaliland and whether we agree or disagree with them, we are a mature democracy and able to discuss issues with people, organizations and or countries who disagree with us and I am confident that the very competent cabinet and government that we have will represent us well in this regard.
Its okey if you are willing to work for the UN office in Hargeisa, there are many guys who also like the bribes and looting of donor's monies.
UN is gangsta organization that only serves the interest of those who established the organization. If its what its name says, how come nations such as Brazil or India cant get permanent membership? This organization is controlled by few and they use it against developing nations. I dont need to explain it, I have no respect for such organization and most countries doing well dont have UN including Israel.
I have never trusted UN or UNPOS policy towards Somalia or Somaliland. They are the one's who have elected these corrupt TFGs, who have writen a free cheque for defencles , unarmed Somali women and children to be slaughtered in Mogudihu to the extent of ethnic cleansing by using mercenary African soldiers from Congo, Burindi, who have commited rapes, and genocides in DRC Congo, and labled them 'peace keepers', when their shelling and killings in the past 2 years have resulted in the death of 4000 civilians and 16,000 casulaties. This has also resulted in the displacement of up to 1.8 million civilians.
The Somaliland Goverment should be very cautious of UN or UNPOs intentions – they are the ones behind the suffering of Somali people by disguise.
lets not blame people or orgnisations of what is going on in this world every little thing that happens we blame it on others, how about those who taking the actions and killing thier own people. wake up people we are responsible of our actions.
in the case of somaliland i believe this is a great opportunity to take over the lead from kayna in our afairs, and help the people of somaliland and you know this can be a great thing, we cant blame our problems on other people like what somalia is doing.
we somalilanders must act always on improving the afairs of our country and move forward.
in the case of somalia stop blaming your pronblems on the Un, blaming on those who ae caring the guns and shoting, you will never get anywhere if you never take responsiblity of your actions.
Somalia is one nation and every one knows that Somalia will not be divide, international community said it clear Somalia is one, even British can't recognize Somaliland. International community gave Somaliland credit how they make their region peace. Remember Sool, sanaag and part of togdheer region they want stay with Somalia unity and international community is aware of that. Until South became peace and get good government then north and south they can talk solve the issue inshaallah.
Until the South became peace and get good Government..I doubt that this on life saving machine TFG will somehow recover to do miracles..If all wishes were horses beggars would ride. Dude you betting on a dead horse. The TFG is a deal driven by merciless brutal self appointed warlords slaughtering and killing their Civilians and living on their blood and causing idp sufferings employing foreign Amisom forces to keep them in power. What a sad predicament. What's the difference between the TFG leadership and COL. Gaddafi and other leaderships of his kind. If Somalia wants to recapture her past glory the TFG must go down and a new caretaker body must takeover until new Somalia will transform itself into some better on d solid foundation based on popularly civilian led Govts (not Military led Govts) having new well defined constitution covering all the necessary requirements.
Cheers.
Kayse,
You seem to have missed the point, I was basically calling out your negetive attitude, You always make comments on many articles on this website which is fine, but if we such the archives, you will find that you are an equal opportunity hater. You seem to dislike everything and everyone and that is not the Spirit of our people and culture in Somaliland.
We have come a long way and we have achieved quite a bit against all odds but we have done that because of our "Can Do" attitude and patience in dealing with even those who are standing in our way such as the AU and Arab League dictators and so on.
We need to keep a positive attitude and not keep our eyes on the price and not get distracted by hate of UN or Puntland or SSC or anyone else who are trying to destroy us and we can do that when we stay Positive as we have been over the last 20 yrs.
A few Corrections: Such = Search,I also meant: We need to keep a positive attitude and keep our eyes on the price .
Dear Mr. Kayse, The current Kulmiye Goverment must do their homework. They must not entertain Mahiga and his Bandits anymore. Let us just be patient for a while. The wicked corrupt immoral and unfair UN was denying our nations rights to exist. Do you recall the word VETO. Keep it always in mind they have their plan and you have your plan. And somliland is your´s……. Name it..UN, UNDP, NGO and etc they are not more than immoral SPIES.
I WILL SUPPORT MY GOVEMENT EVEN IF HITTLER COMES TO SOMALILAND WE DONT WANT SOMALIA
