The following is a press statement from Abaarso Tech University, a boarding school and a university that hopes to be the ‘intellectual center that radiates world class education to the Somaliland’ public.
Abaarso Tech University School of Finance Adds Wall Street Partner; Enrolls Several SOS Sheikh Secondary Students and Launches New English Immersion Program
With just one month to go before Abaarso Tech University School of Finance opens its doors, ATU is proud to announce several developments that significantly strengthen the program. The school, whose motto is “world class education without leaving the country,” is already garnering a lot of interest.
“The ATU School of Finance was conceived to capitalize on AT’s strong Wall Street contacts as well as our know-how in teaching grammatically-sound practical English. The announcement today provides an idea of just how much is possible at ATU,” said Jonathan Starr, Abaarso Tech’s Managing Director.
To complement the rigorous coursework, the School of Finance is developing a cooperative internship program to grant students the opportunity to gain real-life workplace skills. The program will place ATU students in businesses for one to five months, allowing the students to learn about the companies, connect classroom theory with day-to-day responsibilities and develop invaluable relationships that will ultimately place them ahead of the competition when they enter the job market.
To this end the School of Finance is proud to announce that Firefly Value Partners, LP, a $300 million Wall Street private investment firm, has agreed to fly one qualified ATU student to New York City and provide a five-month paid internship. ATU plans to sign up both international partners like Firefly as well as Somaliland-based companies and firms to provide its students every advantage it can.
“Firefly Value Partners is excited about the launch of the new finance undergraduate program at Abaarso Tech University. We are confident that the combination of Somaliland’s best students, the great teachers at the school, and the leadership of Jonathan Starr, will create a terrific group of graduates who will be well positioned to compete for some of the most attractive finance jobs in the world. We look forward to contributing to the internship process,” said Ariel Warszawski and Ryan Heslop, the founders of Firefly Value Partners, LP.
Adding to the quality of the program, ATU will provide a two-week English immersion boarding experience for its first class of students. During this period, ATU students will work in small groups led by native English speaking teachers to strengthen their language skills, so that they will not only thrive in the undergraduate program, but also succeed in a global marketplace.
Finally, because the School of Finance is only the most serious of students, ATU is pleased to count 15 alumni of the elite SOS Sheikh Secondary School in the overall number who have registered; more continue to show interest. At $1,250 per year, ATU plans to provide a challenging and stimulating classroom experience comparable to other reputable universities around the world. It is the sincere desire of the founders that the School of Finance will provide the impetus for the university-aged Diaspora to return home.

This is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the sort of things that make me love America. Any thing is possible and generosity is never an issue.
Somaliland students will definitely deliver as for English you need to be an in an English speaking country to completely master that language in particular when it comes to communication.
This is great investment by America corporate world, its time to tell Obama his things will not work nor will this "mighty American army" work. They are still stuck in Afghistan almost 10 years on.
What the third world needs in particular Muslim world is this sort of contact and investment which will lead to greater understanding between the two worlds and eventually a better, more tolerant and cohesive world.
Jonathan you made it from nothing to wall st in such a short time, I know you will succeed in every thing in life. Corporate America welcome to the deserts of Somaliland hahahahaha
Now even Americans wish they had such internship forget those in Africa! 5 months paid internship in NYC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with a corporate worth $300m
This is really good news for somaliland at least young people have something to forward if they contunue for higher education. Well done ATU
GO somaliland
WE will come back
Congratulations Abaarso Tech University for getting this opportunity. i'm so confident that this internship programe will provide interns with the oppotunity to apply their graduate reseach to a real-world challenge and gain valuable experience by spending time on site with the partner organisation.
Obviously recent developments in Sciense and Education is preparing somalialnd to be center of Knowledge and innovations in East Africa.
Why are somali people so gullible to believe and not even question everything they read or hear.
Mr Jonathan and Dr Ahmed Issa already earned the trust and love of Somaliland people. There are times to question and times to grow together and keep the trust. We past the questioning time long time ago.
Somaliland is moving forward so is Abaarso Tech.
I couldnt agree more..realy…. when will we learn???? when will we learn??? when I see this gullible people, is when I know that we (Somalis/African/Muslims) have no hope watsoever, its SAD,,..
Get lost.
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASED
GO to HILL
Bet it boy! It is true u shall not believe in everything u hear. If u r muslim u should know shame on u!!!!
Congratulations Abaarso Tech University and Somaliland. The real winners here are Somaliland students now they have an opportunity they never dreamed about.
Wonderful things can happen if you work hard and keep an open mind for new things.
A lot of Americans and other nationals are sacrificing a lot to make this happen financially and to materialize it.
Some people have not still understood the importance of this and the opportunity for Somaliland business community.
Now businesses such as Dahabshiil can have direct business contacts with Wall St if they use this opportunity and work with Mr Jonathan and get him to introduce them to America's financial powerhouses.
One thing Somaliland desperately needs right now is proper construction firms that can build national infustructure including roads, ports, and even railways.
American firms should be invited.
Like the article but don't understand why enrolling students from Sheikh needed to be mentioned (to incresae your prestige?).
While I'm a fan of Abaarso and know many of you guys (perhaps whoever wrote the article); it should be clear that even if Sheikh's quality of education has gone down since it's re-inception; it is a historic institution and it would take Abaarso Tech nothing less than at least a quarter century to reach it's reputation.
Mo
Sheikh had a good reputation ages ago but not anymore. Today, its just like any other school in Somaliland, but Abaarso Tech has a lot of things going for it and that is great.
Sheikh had good reputations when it was funded by the British Government, it no longer provides funds for the institution. It is still the best we have and it will remain for a long time.
There is no competition between Sheikh boarding school and Abaarso but the two will lift education in the region and their curriculums are so different. Their goals are one, their drive are different.
Eventually Sheikh borading school students will go to Abaarso Tech which means Abaarso is higher and gives more growth opportunity to students.
Its Realy SAD to see all these people going wild about this article and its content without any QUESTION, Your NAIVETY is SHOCKING….. You Just believe anything you see or hear!!!.. when will you question things? when will you STOP and ask yourself….What is in for Them? why Would a High Flying NY Firm invest all these resources on Some African/Muslim Students in other end of the world??
if they GENUINELY wanted to help the disadvantaged Kids, Dontchu think they would Find Millions of less fortunate Children around just NY, let alone whole America??? I dream of a DAY when My People use their common sense & Logic and get lil smarter!!! but it seems I will be dreaming til END of Time!!
I am really very happy to get the opportunity being a student from ATU while I was just graduated a year ago from SOS SHEIKH secondary school which is one of the oldest and the greates school in east and central africa including Somalia,Kenya,Ethiopia and Uganda.
Special thanks goes to Johnatton Star who is very talented, dedecated and hardworker and I am really extended my gratitude to any other foriegn person who is in the campus.
whatever somebody says, SHEIKH AND ABAARSO are not comparable..,
