Speaking at the graduation ceremony Dr Bulhan Hussein, the Chancellor of UoH, congratulated the new doctors and their parents.

The Chancellor expressed appreciation for the efforts of the students and for their sacrifice and dedications over the years. The group is the second patch to graduate from the University since it’s rehabilitation after the war with neighboring Somalia.

Dr Edna Adan Ismael and Prof. Mubraik Ibrahim Aar were among many who addressed the attendees. The two stated the importance of having new doctors in Somaliland – a country where basic health indicators are among the worst in the world.

The faculty was established in 2003 with 75 students with 15 graduating last year.

The students have been undertaking intensive courses in obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatics and psychiatry, urology and general surgery, general medicine and palliative medicine for the past six years.

A number of students are currently under taking advanced medical training including the first ever Somali trained heart surgery in which they collaborating with Addis Cardiac Hospital, the first hospital for cardiovascular diseases in East Africa.

In order to improve the student’s clinical skills, Somaliland universities and medical associations have requested assistance from the international community. So far Somaliland universities have developed partnership with Kings College Hospital (KCH), UK, the Australian Doctors for Africa (ADFA) and a number of other Western institutions.

Somaliland hospitals have as well developed ties with leading organizations in the Arab world including the UAE and Kuwait Red Crescent societies.

Mashallah, i can only imagine how proud the parents are. I think that the bigger problem is not that their is to few doctors that are being trained but the issue to make them stay in somalia (avoid brain drain) Because now when the population of europe is growing older. They are heavily (belive me) investing in getting educated medical staff out from the developing world to their own health care. So make them stay and i belive 17 new doctors every year is not great but better then nothing.

You see, such effort is what makes Somaliland different from other countries in the region, and it is what makes Somaliland unique. Somaliland's strength is, we dont sit and wait for other people to come help us, and we dont wait for development, like manna, to fall down from sky. Step by step build our lives, build universities, train our teachers, train our security personel, build a vibrant democratic state and lastly we strive hard to maintain our hard earned peace and security. My vision is, with international recognition or without internation recognition, if we triple our effort, stay focused and continue to tread this path, one day in the near future, Somaliland will attain development like Taiwan and Hongkong. And this is what scares somaliweyn proponent that, Somaliland is going to fly and soar beyond the outer space leaving them behind in their tribal ignorance. This the reason they are crying after us, and this the reason they hate Somaliland. Finally, let me congratulate the new medical graduates, I wish them success, and I hope they serve their country to their utter most abilities, a country which had sacrificed and invested alot towards their education. Kudos to you all and kudos to Somaliland

Building Somaliland one block at a time. Allah helps those who help themselves. Somalilanders depend on themselves. Again lets redouble our efforts to develop our country. let us fight triablism and clannism which is already in decline. Somaliland is for all Somalilanders. "Barbarkay Ka Baxdaa Waa Bakayla Qaleen." This are determined civil people with rich civilization. What you see is based on our illustrious history of civic engagement, helping each other and building our communities. The difference between Somalilanders and Walaweyn is Somalilanders are self-sufficient, action-oriented and confident people, Walawey only know how to be jealous and bad mouth others. In the coming 10 years Somaliland will attain significant development. Thanks to God our people are going back from their diaspora and making use of their knowledge. Somalilanders love their Repbulic and country.

    Long life Somaliland

I agree with you there. Tribalism is declining and only remains with few people and the so called "suldaano" and other tribal leaders and people who seek power in the name of "representing x tribe". Right now as Silanyo builds his cabinet Somalilanders ask for qualified people but the tribal believers like the ones i mentioned above have poured into Hargeisa from all regions.

But what amaze me is a man from Borama can get as much votes as one from Erigavo today and a man from Burao can get popular votes in Borama.

We have made very big leap in the last 5-6 years and its partly because of our political parties that most have inclusive representatives from all regions.

We need to improve more but we heading in the right direction every has to support the system now.

They need jobs now. The new administration should make it a piority to place these doctors in hospitals or private clinics around the country. Doctors and engineers must be encouraged to stay home and benefit the nation as a whole and contribute to the rebuilding of Somaliland.
