Ethiopia and Somaliland military ties continue

ADDIS ABABA — Twelve cadets with special military engineering skills will join the Somaliland national armed forces this week after graduating from a defense college in neighbouring Ethiopia.

Ethiopia’s top military brass including the defense minister Siraj Fegesa awarded a gold medal recognizing outstanding performance and the highest grade point average by a cadet to Saeed Adan Nur during a graduation held in Defence Engineering College (DEC). He was one of only dozen cadets honored as a Distinguished Graduate with Institute Honors.

Mr. Nur was part of a twelve students from Somaliland who received Bachelor of Engineering degrees in number of departments including electronics, armaments, civil and combat, electrical and aeronautical.

As a part of a defense relationship between the two countries, the Ethiopian government grants every year scholarships to students from Somaliland. The Ethiopian Ministry of Defense (MoD) oversees the program and admits them to the governmental institution, which the department established in 1997. The college trains locals and other African military cadets in military engineering skills and military ethics.

Ever since they have been coming Somaliland cadets have been graduating on top of their classes. Just last year the Ethiopian premiere Mr. Meles Zenawi presented gold medal to Somaliland student Ahmed Shadi Abdullahi after receiving the highest marks.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Defense said students from Somaliland were highly discipline and eager to learn as well as respectful for those around them.

These unit have been studying in Ethiopia for the last five and a half years; three years of diploma and two-and-a-half years of undergraduate training. They will contribute to the stability of the overall region and Somaliland’s growing security forces.

Somaliland field marshal Abdullahi Alas and the Somaliland military training director attended the graduation ceremony among high status delegations from the region. They congratulated all cadets and thanked the Ethiopian government and the college for their hospitality and support.

Since 2008, at least 50 cadets from Somaliland graduated from the military institute in the town of Debre Zeit.

  2. wanlaweyn says:

what do you mean kenya? are you somali? this is between Somalis. failed state is a term used by the west to rank in order countries that have their ideals. countries like iraq who have ten suicideevery day is apparently not failed state. somali people will always be one whether being hold hostage in kenya or ethiopia or call themselfs djiboutian. the issue between south and north somalia will not be consulted with a kenyan

Walanwen my bro im somali but kenyan citizen and it has touch me alot de unpredictble war in my ancestor country but then it s good we talk reality cz this is not de right time for somalia to negotiate with somaliland wen de large swath part of de country is not librated . But again my view i can see a light at de of tunnel . And i thnk nobody can stop somalia reaching the sun. And my fellows somalis always be careful about tribalism? Tx

      @moha kenya

the thing some people do not understand is that solving somali problem requires solving all somali problem not only in the south. that is why united kingdom asked somaliland to participate in the transition process. the reason why is somaliland has an interest where the country is going as they are officially part of the republic in other words sland have a vested interest in the south so it is impprtant they are happy about the transition. there is not to negotiate with sland except involving them with the transition. as far is the south is concerned somaliland is where we want them to be. another peaceful region regognized as part of the republic by the whole world. when i say sland i mean the hargeisa adminitration and those that support them. i am aware that are people in the protectorate that are pro union like ssc and awdal.

rubbish somaliland is a country and will NEVER rejoin somalia again so take it like a man fool

        • SOMALIWEYN says:

Rubbish Somaliland is a myth made by Colonial Britain that in turn was used by the SNM militants who where once regarded as freedom fighters into the same thing they was once fighting against SIAD BARRE a TRIBAL DICTATORIAL STATE except Barre was actually recognized by the world you on the other hand keep on dreaming. Sorry to burst your bubble but the truth shall be be told . Also i don't believe in July the 1'st because the 5 STAR on our flag wasn't completed on that day only 2/5. No OGADEN NEF & DJIBOUTI means no Somalia only with the completion of the 5 regions as one shall we have finally our true INDEPENDENCE nothing less nothing more

You must be sick just re-read what you have just written. My advice is to concentrate how to dig your lot from the deep troubles you are in if you understand it at all

  4. Saleebaan Xaaji says:

This is about Somaliland and its military officers. Why are these two people talking about Kenya and Somalia. Please find something better to do with your time instead of trawling Somaliland websites. The story doesn't concern you, you look foolish commenting on something that is none of your business. Surely, there must be something else going on in your lives! Damn!!!

  5. Ayuush says:

    Moha Kenya

What I have gathered from your comments, You are a proud Somali, who has grown up under foreign occupants, I admire how you have preserved your Somali spirit.

    Wanlaweyn

May Allah bring peace and stability to the South of Somalia, but we must remember that Allah will not change a people's position unless they change that which is within them.
