MOGADISHU — Somalia’s President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said Thursday he would stand as a candidate for a new term in office, two months ahead of his job coming up for renewal.

“My services are available to Somalia if I am trusted with the job for another term,” Sharif told AFP on the sidelines of meetings with representatives of the international community in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

Somalia’s fragile transitional institutions have to be renewed in the next two months, with a new parliament due to elect a new president by August 20, according to a calendar backed by the international community.

The calendar is supposed to take Somalia into a new era of political stability, the Horn of Africa country having been without a central administration since the ouster of former president Siad Barre in 1991.

Elected by the current parliament on January 31, 2009, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, 47, is criticised both inside Somalia and — behind closed doors — by the international community for having dragged his feet in the fight against graft and not having done enough to restore law, order and basic services.

“During my presidency I dedicated my efforts mainly to fighting terrorism that had become a dangerous phenomenon in the region,” Sharif said.

“The time is coming to build the nation. Lawlessness will have no space in the future.”

Somalia’s Al-Qaeda linked Shebab rebels have been forced to abandon their positions in the capital in recent months by an African Union force fighting together with the fledgling Somali army and troops sent by Kenya and Ethiopia.

The military operations have also wrested back control of many of the Shebab’s bastions in southern and central Somalia.

“Their strength has been greatly diminished. They are now on the run looking for hideouts,” Sharif said.

Other expected candidates for president include the current prime minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali and the speaker of parliament Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan.

This is good news because Sheikh Sharif is starting to make some progress and he deserves to become the first real Somali president in post-Siad era. His stay will ensure warlords like Farole do not have any chance.

I welcome his re-stand for presidential post. All those unknown criminals and warlords will be sent back. The IC also likes Sharif.

  2. Jabuutawi says:

Say what! Power is intoxicating. He will never go back to teaching in a dugsi….I am just saying.

Yo, it is summer and I got nothing better to do..u heard.

    • Kayse says:

Sharif is better than your obese dictator and Mogadishu is doing far better than Djibouti despite the many years you had a totalitarian regime.

He is former dugsi teacher who can read Quran unlike your dictator who drinks champagne with the French troops thats why his belly is bigger than the map Djibouti.

      • Abdiwahab says:

shut up djibouti and somaliland are countries that have elections and order unlike your failed zoomalia to me djibouti ville is better than mogadishu ever was

      • Jabuutawi says:

Naya iska amuus. A man does not talk the way you do – always nagging about something.

PS: I could care less if Ismaciil drank champagne or not. In Islam unless you have evidence, you do not call out someone. By all means send me the evidence where Ismaciil is drinking alcohol, walahi please do that gabadha, OK?

  3. ComeAgain says:

SMDH Good luck with that to those in Somalia. Yall just dont ever get a break, one bad leader to the next! Something is in the water over there perhaps years of toxic dumping in the waters has finally hit the aquafours contaminating the fresh water wells damn!

  4. Barwaaqo says:

Sheekh Shariif should be elected as the democratically elected Somalia president, surely he knows how to deal with warlords, alshabaab and peace spoiler. (waa hadii Hawiye turubkii bartay)

  5. AntoninusPius says:

Does any body know exactly how the next Somali president is to be chosen after August? Is it more elders from the clans or something more democratic?

    • Kayse says:

Nah man there is no democracy in Somalia. The presidential election system has not changed it just got a new stamp called "new constitution" and million drafts and principles but thats only for the international media. The process remains the same. Whoever has the most money bribes the most elders. They usually use two options, hands or "secret" ballot or vote. This time it will definitely be hand because Sheikh Sharif has enough money to buy all voters and is confident. Most elders in the TFG will remain and he looked after them with good payouts in the last several years thats why Somalia can't account 70% of the money donated to them.

If you have few millions you can become the president of Somalia, just give enough cash to tribal elders and have someone that declares the results to the international media.

The elders will choose Sheikh Sharif again and Farole will probably declare Puntland independent and Sharif Sakin will probably declare himself president too and things might spiral out of control again. Ethiopia will call all parties and will declare Ahlu Sigar Wal Jimiicsi the President. Then they will run to Kenya and Kenya will declare the Raskambons the President and urge them to sign the oil discoveries near its border to Kenya.

Kenya will fund its militia, Ethiopia will fund its own too, Sheikh Sharif will go back to one block rule and Farole will go back to piracy. African Union will just increase their numbers and might remain there for the next 10 years.

Those are the most likely outcome.

        @kayse.
No one knows even if sharifow will come back it’s 50/50 or may be his use date expired in westren calender.any election always money will involve look U.S & EU election time big corpaoration write checks to candidate in return luctrative contract when elect.

somali situation totaly different now, west will not allow again mogadishu or in That matter all The big cities become again play ground for warlords gangs or extrime religious groubs,They will use AU.

Remember what happen to Those parliamantarians ex warlords opposed sharif sakiin”razor”,They were told to back off or face flight ban frozen assets even arrest.

if too rich or too poor in somali politics today not easy, cuz if too rich west will dictate or Threaten you lisen to Them, too poor no chance runing any office.

This ethiopian kenyan case will disappear if The somalis play hard ball with west.

    • madar ali says:

it’s not gone be direct election from The people. put The parliament will elect of course with The consultation from The WEST,west already dedided who will be next President.

Last time somalis had real or experienced genuine election from The people were in 1961-1968.

Even today s/land & Puntland do not have Authentic election, looking very close s/land election no one counts voters in small towns corruption & kickback is rife.Puntland does not have direct election system Parliament elect The president.

      • Abdiwahab says:

stop chatting rubbish fool somaliland is a pure democratic country somaliland and somalia are at either end of the democracy index were functioning state you're failed state lolol

  6. mohamed cheers says:

Who would be the new term President for the new term treaty Signatories beyond August 20/12,
is too early to contemplate. It would be a tough battle between the trio outgoing pres,pm,b/chief?.
The splf(Alshabab) liberation fighters are also not defeated yet and may alter the political dynamics.
EG..The UIC wing (the President of the TFG deserted) whose leader SH.Dahir Aways remains the strong religious/secular educated Sheikh and strong pro Egyptian brotherhood religious doctrine,
and the UIC being a strong haaawiye political base should be difficult to understimate in any
future Somalia proper, political landslide after August 20/12 new administrations.
    Cheers.

  7. my2cents says:

So its more of the same after August.

This dude is Joke, he spends more time travelling the global than he has been in the country.

This guy may not be a warlord, but I don't think you could leads his way out of a paper bag.

  8. Kayse says:

Sheikh Sharif will clearly win this election because the international community and regional powers do not want new players yet because they have gotten to know Sheikh Sharif Ahmed. They are not ready for new ones to battle it out, they will just strongly lean behind Mr Ahmed.

Besides Sheikh Sharif is neutral when it comes to the main dominant force in the south, the Hawiye. Under his rule it seems the Habar Gedir and Abgaal beef has faded and today the Hawiye are living in harmony amongst themselves which is good.

No one else builds IC confidence than Sheikh Sharif who was open to AMISOM troops, who welcomed all factions including Ahlu Sigaar.

If anyone other than Sharif bribes the elders, it will be a bloodshed and the IC will not back it. Sharif enjoys wide support in Africa, Middle East and the West.

What holds him back is Sharif Sakiin.

Nothing will change in the south, the IC will just drop the "TFG" tag.

    • ahmed yalaxoow says:

      h*w*y@ it is not main clan in The south i am h*w*y@ i know.real h*w*y@s are abg**l h@ber g@dir mur*rs*de. x@w**dle shiq@@l g**lgec*l b**di c*de are not h*w*y@ but supporters.

  9. Kayse says:

Personally I like Sheikh Sharif. He is not a sharp guy nor a strong leader but we Somalis are all aggressive and arrogant people, its good to have a different shade. Sheikh Sharif has personality more than any other leader in Somali peninsula. And it just happens Farole has the worst. Just look at his pictures the guy is always angry and has no appeal to him.

Sheikh Sharif is charismatic leader, one day he has his Islamic hat, next in military camouflage, next in his sunnies and suit. He doesn't care what everyone thinks of him—he is happy with who he is.

He also reminds me of that Iraqi information minister during the Iraq invasion because when he was member of the Islamic Union Courts he used to say he will never shake hand with a "female". Then now there are photos where he is hugging Hillary Clinton.

Long life Sharifa biishimo gudud (lips red). He is a good man and he is not calling for any destruction unlike ina Yeey, Ali Mahdi, Mohamed Dheere, Fanax Geedi. This man made this progress possible.

His vote is already secured and the IC can now rest that he made this announcement. All that needs to change in Somalia is the constitution, security, economic reforms, police reforms, form of government, human rights——-not its leader.

While you somalis are arguing over nonsense the kufrs from the pentagon have waged world wide genocide against all muslim nations.. watch?v=L65srliPkN4. May Allah have mercy on us.

  12. calanle says:

guys and girls i announced every political outcome in the last 20 years because i have "information"
    this is what i said

aidid will not see peaceful somalia
somaliland will never be recognised by any foreign country
Abdqasim salad hasan – i said will be total failure
abdulah yousuf will become president and come to villa somalia ( everyone was laughing at me )
    sharif will be president

my prediction is sharif will not be re elected ( if he has been the country will further improve

more prediction: there will not be h@b@rg1dir president
more outrages predictions: sakiin will not be speaker in fact speaker will come from north somalia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. cimraan says:

I agree with this guy although not as predictions but as a matter of fact. This is the only way southern Somalia will be stabilized. There are a sizable community that have routes in Somaliland who call the south home. They should be afforded to rule that country. The president and the speaker of the house should come from them.Prime Minister should be Rahanween.

And the capital of Galmudug should be Gaalkacayo and under their full control

    • mohamed cheers says:

Credible ideas if those power seeking warlords could use their minds and listen to you mr Cimraan.
Who knows, that might be a wonderful experiment and could make a new big difference.
      Cheers.

  14. mohamed cheers says:

Whosoever is re-elected or elected as a new govt power candidate(s) would against their
own crisis also face tough challenges from the Somaliland de jure Independence conquest.
That means any Somalia and the IC incapable of properly addressing and putting into real
context the Somaliland just cause legit de jure issue would always remain a real hurdle
obstacle(s) to the real peace of Somalia. That again means that if/when the Somaliland
political embargo is undone, then and only then, the all Somalia and the Horn of Africa,
Igad, and E.A bloc. would find real peace and prosperity. The choice is clear.
    Cheers.

  15. khaatumo citizen says:

sheikh sharif is the best thing happen to Somalia since Siad Barre.. i like how he says walaleheen reer waqooyi lool
but next the president shouldn't be Hawiyee and MJ we all know since Siad Barre left somalia become thier liltle playground.. expect Farmajo and Galaydh every president and PM from those two tribes.. am not against or anything but people need change..

    • Abdiwahab says:

siyad barre and the regime he led was the worst in somali history u and ur clans people are the cancer of somali society ok
