Former Transitional President of Somalia Abdullahi Yusuf, used excessive force to oppress rival clan (the Hawiye).

BOSASSO — The former president of Somalia has died at the age of 78 in a Dubai hospital, in the United Arab Emirates, on Friday.

Abdullahi Yusuf was the first Somali president to return to the capital Mogadishu since the fall of dictator Mohammed Siad Bare in 1991, and served four years before handing power to Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed in 2008.

Mr Yusuf was a controversial army colonel who tried to remove Mohammed Siad Bare by force since 1977. He is said to have formed the first armed rebel group, Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF), in Somalia. He also became the first president of Somalia’s semi autonomous region of Puntland in 1998.

He underwent a liver transplant in the late 1990s and was admitted to hospitals in neighboring Kenya, Yemen and the United Kingdom several times.

Sources close to the family of Mr Yusuf said his liver transplant failed and he past away peacefully.

He is expected to be buried in the town of Galkayo in Puntland where he was born in 1934.

The Somaliland government issued a statement offering their condolences to the family, relatives of Mr Yusuf and the Somali people.

Rest in peace col. Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed. He didn't like Somalilanders or southern Somalis and was clanist to the core but he is now dead and all that should be left in the grave with him.

    • Mohamd says:

"now dead and all that should be left in the grave with him."

That is difficult when persons make themselves "public figures". They do deserve to be scrutanised for forever if they meddled into affairs concerning outside their family circles such as state and ethnic issues.

  7. Mohamd says:

Former "president o somalia" or former "TFG President". He was nothing to the old Somali Republic, except few refugees who received jobs through UN programs.

  22. mohamed cheers says:

Gen. Siad Barre destroyed all Somaliaweyn aspirations and died a sorrowful death leaving
behind his popular saying..after me there will be no people or country in Somalia and
gave away NDF/Ogadenia as well to retain his evil totalitarian dictatorial powers to rule.
The next evil after him is C/laahi Yusuf…he too followed the worst atrocities in history allowing
Somalia to be invaded by foreign enemies and accepted unforgivable foreign military occupations
to takeover and destroy Somalia as we speak. His death leaves behind unforgivable sad memories!.
There are many more still living engaged in the worst disservices to Somalia in particular
and allsomaliweyn in general. God knows better.
    Cheers.

  23. Puntlander says:

To God we belong and to Him we return.

I was very saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved Hero-President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed. He was true patriot, He didn't like thieves, corrupt individuals and Somalidiidsm, He was an action oriented man, with incredible determination and stamina, words fail me to describe this giant of a man who dedicated his entire life to his country, his dynamism, and his drive is unparalleled in all parts of the Somali- speaking territories, he will be missed by many. His legacy is significant an lasting,

May Merciful Allah grant the departed soul everlasting peace in heaven. May Allah grant his family, patience, fortitude and solace to bear the loss.

    • Abraham says:

Lol @ "Somalidiidism" You made me laugh.

  24. Qaali says:

may allah forgive him, and all of us!

  25. Samira says:

He might have been a controversial figure, but in the end History sided with him. First He was the first Somali to stand up to the Dictator Barre. He led the first Somali rebellion against that barbaric dictator. Second, when he tried to enlist the Ethiopian troops to help his fragile government, the people cried " Colonization". The man brought the Ethiopians in such difficult times to strengthen a weak Government. And now that he is gone, we see Ethio-Troops everywhere, doing exactly that.
Other than few quibbles here and there, the man silently resigned and left in peace, watching on the sidelines, with honor and respect. As a Muslim, I pray to Allah to forgive him and show him mercy. RIP.
