The recently sworn in Somali parliament members has on Friday and Saturday held special session to listen to the speeches of the country’s presidential candidates barely hours to the date set for the historic presidential vote to be conducted in Somalia for the first time in two decades.

Twenty-five qualified candidates are set to compete in the elections and were allotted 20 minutes each to present to parliament their political philosophies. In his speech former Somali Premier Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo who enjoys majority public support warned legislators against electing leaders on the basis of improving their political future.

The presidential election has been delayed several times having already missed an August 20 deadline. Outgoing Somali leader who has been in power since 2009 is seeking a second term in office, promising MPs that once elected, Somali people will soon have the chance to elect their own leaders unlike the current trend where elders select the president on behalf of the people.

For one to be declared winner, the candidate needs to take two-thirds of the vote to win outright, otherwise the top four candidates will go into a second round, with a third round of the final two where the winner is selected by a simple majority. Aspirants are optimistic that Somali MPs will elect effective leaders who will drive Somalia out of poverty and illiteracy.

Former Somali premier Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo, , Outgoing Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, , Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, outgoing president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Mohamed Siad Barre son of the ousted Somali president Siad Bare are considered the favorites in thepolls.

The UN Special envoy for Somalia in an open statement earlier this week called on the Somali parliament not to feel bound by any obligation other than the interests of the country and the Somali people and at the same time choose the candidate who will be honest and effective in leading the country with a vision appropriate for the next four years of transformation and peace-building in Somalia.

“Presidential candidates are making speeches to the members of the new Somali federal parliament who are set to choose a new president on September 10th. However the end of an eight year old Transition Government means little change for the Somali people as the country will remain ruled for the coming 4 years by a selected rather than an elected government”

With Sharif Hassan Sh. Adan, the former TFG Chairman who lost the new parliamentary
elections chairmanship to DR Jawaari, out of the Presidential race, I lost interest in the whole Presidential race of the 24 candidates. None is suitable to carry out the roadmap plan,
Furthermore, I see Re-electing Sharif Ahmed is suicidal and would simply mean more
chaos and more bloodshed for Somalia. Equally DR Gass and Farmaajo have their Darod
bad political ill-will historical fears to put up with!!!?. Who's this Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud?
Forget Somalilanders..Oomar and DR Samatar. Sharif Hassan Sh. Adan out of the Presidential
race..the whole Presidential race is in great jeopardy.
    Cheers.

Loool Mo cheers have you listened to Maslah Siad Barre's speech,? he was quite inspiring, like a father like a son, he believes Somalia should be ruled with an iron fist. lool I want Farmajo or Sheikh Sharief to win but lets see till tomorrow.

      • whineforit says:

@ Khaatumo. Sheik Shariif should trust others and hand over without running again. He shows his distrust by going for continued post…. I state again that change comes and people fear but with selfish motives. A president holds a post and it doesn't and should mean dominance over or slavery over others. Get it.

      • mohamed cheers says:

Trust me sister, whoever happens tomorrow and whosoever wins out of this 24, would face
a strong under current religious more stronger in content. The new President would be facing
tough Alshabab UIC inspired with Sharif Hasan and Hardliner Hassan Dahir Awais.
Greater Somalia could stand a chance of Islamic role model similar to the Egyptian
Muslim brotherhood. But let's see how the Roadmap plan delivers good results, which's
        difficult to forecast.
        Cheers.

  2. whineforit says:

Sheikh Shariif is not a King or Monarchy nor is Abdiweli and others who have had posts. They are employess of the people. A president should be dignified and not show miss trust by refusing to hand over. Especially, since he receives the support like his successor of outside help.

  3. osman5 says:

It's all garbage in garbage out to me. Recycling the same corrupt politicians is not going to take Somalia forward. A new vibrant leadership is badly needed for Somalia, unfortunately, I can see a flock of opportunist vultures over a discomposed animal corpse.

  4. Kayse says:

It does not matter who wins. Today the real winners are the Somali people. After two decades of chaos. foreign interference and civil war, Somalia has the chance to put the past to rest and open a new chapter in its young political life.

This is a new chapter and a new era for the Somali Republic. Whoever wins the elders' vote will no doubt face obstacles and setbacks but the nation is tired of war and once we have eliminated al Shabab…we will rebuild the Somali Republic.

We can't be stuck in the past and say this man did this or he did that…let it go, its time to move forward and ask him what can he do for Somalia now.

Those who are against Maslah Siad Bare are only against him because of fear. They fear he will be like his father. I personally want him to be like his father in some areas but not in every way. If he can keep Somalia together that's a good thing but his dictator ways are no no.

Siad Bare made big mistakes but he was the best Somali leader. Things were not perfect in terms of human right records but the nation was developing and selfish Somalis misunderstood. Who cares if he built Mogadishu, Gedo or Zeila…at least he was developing Somalia.

Meles was his student and today Ethiopians feel the way we feel about Siad about Meles. They hate his human records but love his development.

Maslah can never be like his father…

My vote goes to Sheikh Sharif who deserves to continue his gains. I hope he also gets a prime minister from north Somalia because Somalia is not for Abgaal and MJ. It has been the same formula for the last twenty years and it is the reason things are not working.

If you take the same road every day and expect to see something new…I am not sure that will happen but if you take a new road, you might see something new.

I agree some of your comment but other i don’t,This is all about debating expressing ideas and exchanging Thoughts.your comment is well writen and balanced.

In my prediction is There will be power sharing between The two top candidate.somalia is moving forward This time for so many reasons, everything has time and place.

FADHI KU DIRIR people are lining up to give a piece of their mind about the election, please let me remind you … people have waited for 21+ years to see this day, wait till tomorrow's historic presidential election in Somalia after 21 years of anarchy .. stay positive and pray for Somalia :) ♥

  6. Hassan(not real) says:

    Keyse,

Please read this it is important stuff:

I have made things up lately about you and even insulted your dear mother. Therefore, I would like to sincerely apologize to you and your mother, which had no contribution to all these tit for tat nonsense. I ask for your forgiveness and I promise that I will never try to tear apart anybody in the remaining few moments of my life. Life is short and we all need to leave it in decent as possible as we can. It is Xaram for all of us to continue in this road of darkness. Let us all forgive each other and make our future debates as constructive as we can. Let us not say anything if we have nothing positive to say about our brothers and sisters anywhere in the world.

I am ashamed to have contributed in useless and degrading debates. Enough is enough, let us all end it here.

Again I ask you, Keyse to forgive me and please ask your dear mother to forgive me too. THANK YOU!

    • Kayse says:

Walaal I understand I do upset many of you and you have deep attachment to your believes but don't be offended. I do not take it offensive anything you guys say because I know myself and the truth however talking about parents is uncalled for and I do accept your apology.

I used to be like you guys into Somaliland but going there changed my mind. Meshu wa bilaa dowlad, I was mad they lied to us for so long. I just want the Diaspora people to know there is nothing there and we should not leave our Somali Republic.

I am all for healthy debates.

      • Hassan not m name says:

Than you Keyse for accepting my apology. I was not able to sleep since I made that comment about your beloved mother and I am wondering how can some people can live life normally, when they know that they have killed tens of thousands, wounded tens of thousands, rapped innumerable mothers, sisters and aunts.

I hope all those who are glorifying those heinous crimes will stop doing it verbally, in writing or otherwise. Degrading other human beings is morally wrong and must come to an end.

Brother Keyse, I think you have the right to oppose Somaliland, but still you can put your case forward by respecting others including those innocent civilians, who lost their lives, because their only crime was that they hailed from certain Somali tribe.

I promise to respect and be sensative enough not to harm others regardless of their political orientation. May Allah guide us all to the right path. Allah bless you all.

        • amal says:

Hassan, that is very manly and brave thing to do, to apologize when one is at wrong masha Allah brother. Wish we had more like you

And Kayse, you should watch your tongue walaal. You are good at expressing yourself openly but should watch what you say because it can hurt people too. with healthy debates I'm sure you can influence others.

        • Kayse says:

Well done Mr ("not") Hassan, I really applaud your move and message. I never really wanted to hurt or offend anyone. It's is just that I hate seeing the so called government mislead the Diaspora people. They really need to know there is no such thing in place and they are all inside that house taking advantage of us. Every time we turn away from them they make their usual move and claim recognition is here bla bla or other lies…

I really seen the suffering in Somaliland like all Somali regions and to be honest everyone only cares about their bariis. If you talk about Somaliland way kula yaabaayaan.

Only few believe it passionly and those you only see them at events and welcoming the President at the airport. Every time he flies out hundreds line up like he is going to the moon, when he comes back the same…jaab.com dee.

I also witnesses how Ethiopia takes advantage of us and that's when I realised we do need a unified Somalia otherwise we will be forced out of our own land like the Palestian people. Some of you might not see that but the threat is real and I recommend you all to travel outside Hargeisa.

I will convey my message in another form without such destruction hahahaha.

          • Hassan not m name says:

Thank you Keyse for accepting my apology. I was not able to sleep since I made that comment about your beloved mother and I am wondering how can some people can live life normally, when they know that they have killed tens of thousands, wounded tens of thousands, rapped innumerable mothers, sisters and aunts.

          • Hassan not m name says:

            One more thing Keysa,

I agree with you that Somaliland government is not perfect, for that matter no government is perfect, perfection belongs solely to Allah (SWT). But it is the best thing that has ever happened to Somalis. People voted for the current government freely, peacefully and democratically, again I am not saying that they can not do better, but with the little economic and international support it had, this government has made miraculous progresses in all fronts.

Yes, you can disagree with the way Somalilanders have chosen to be their destiny, but what you do not need to do is to throw the baby with the bath water. In my opinion this will only cause Somalis to divert and not come together. You see Djibouti is a separate country and it is still a country for all Somalis. I think we should all out grow the mentality of Siyadism and domination and try new ideas of supporting one another and living in peace once and for all.

Let us try the two state solution, living side by side for sometime and if that become not beneficial to the Somali people than we must seek alternatives. Somalia is sinking further to the ocean and must stop spitting on the face of its sister that is trying to help it.
