The head of Somalia’s corruption-riddled government said Monday he expects to be re-selected as president of the war-torn Horn of Africa nation when his current mandate expires next month.
“I am a strong candidate and I am very confident that I will win,” President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed told reporters.
Somalia’s Western-funded Transitional Federal Government (TFG) ends its mandate next month after years of infighting and minimal political progress.
Transitional institutions, including the presidency and the parliament, were set up in 2004 but must be replaced by permanent institutions by August 20.
Somali elders are due to designate members of a new parliament which will choose the new president by August 20.
Sharif, who faces competition for the presidency from parliament speaker Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan, was linked to alleged graft in a U.N. report leaked earlier this month that called for corrupt leaders to face Security Council sanctions.
Sharif called the allegations “absolutely false” and said that he was unconcerned about the possibility of U.N. sanctions.
“The U.N. will look at this and make their own conclusions, but for me my conscience is clear,” Sharif said.
Billed as the key to lifting anarchic Somalia out of two decades of civil war, the end of the transitional period comes at a time when regional forces have wrested a series of key strongholds from the Islamist Shebab insurgents.
Somalia has been without a stable central government since the ouster of former president Siad Barre in 1991.

Go shiekh Sharif u got our vote as long as we got the PM. lool
I predict either Farmajo or Sharif will win.
nothing new somalia is failed state always will be
what good will it do for you if Somali remains a failed state? You will get more refugees, more terror and more uncertainity if your own neighbour is disfunctional so it is your own best interests to pray peace and stability in Somalia and don't let yourself be carried away by the talk of the ignorant people.
Good on you for commenting though.
perhaps we worried they will start bombing us, again. we have reasons to worry.
idoit………
ur mummy idoit…..
Baadiyow is the best candidate for Somalia, the cleanest and the most honest.
However, we all know that this sick method of electing the leaders will reward those same old faces who were implicated in the corruption such as; Sharif, Sharif Hassan, Famajo and PM Abdi Weli.
If Somalia wants peace they should elect a new face and a honest and hard working man who such as Baadiyow, but no the elders will pick and they just want whoever offers them the highest kick backs.
SMH we could learn alot from Somaliland who actually let the people pick their leaders!!!!!!!
you missing The point here,it’s ready pre-selected who will be next president. put This time it will be very tied control goverment in corruption area.so The two sharif can not steal money.
well s/land case it’s not real democracy when you look very closely cuz only certain of The region election held.
Someone who is more experienced and open minded than Sherif should win who knows how to prioritise the immense task of rebuilding a failed nation and bring disfunctional society together to achieve the common gaols. I don't think either Sharif or Faramajo are capable of covering what lays ahead. W hat Somalia needs today is a visionary leader like the late M. Egal who united the people of Somaliland and cleared the way for a peaceful, prosperous Somaliland which is governed by the rule of the people in a democratic fashion. the likes of Egal in Mogadisho today is men like Nuur Adde who are old and experienced and know how the tribal structure of the society is and how to turn that structure into nationalistic identity where every tribe feels save and included. Alahu walam the best.
I lost faith in the roadmap treaty signatories. Their re-election makes no real sense and
common purpose. That's the same old folk-lore warlords who proved nothing more than
rubber stamps status quo for foreign occupation of failed Somalia. I don't trust the new
constitution either. The only meaningful resolve for Somalia after the August 20/12 is to
create a new council of caretaker body similar to Tunisia,Libya,Egypt and possibly Syria and
many other AL/OIC to follow in the wake of the Arab Spring uprisings, revolts, revolutions of
the peoples civil liberties movements to get rid of the Military/dictatorial totalitarian ruling powers.
Let's wait and see how the outgoing TFG wailers could make a good comeback and become
unchallenged by the Somalian true forces.
Cheers.
they will probably chose someone similar or the same man (although that seeming unlikely now, following the corruption allegations) because it gives the war torn state a sense of stability or continuity, also they don't want to out stage the Al-Shabab they want all eyes on them all the time.
Ayaan.
your comment makes a lot of sense you must be well inform lady.
going back to The topic somalia will remain under trusteeship long time to come. Thank’s to warlords fake religiuos scholars and so forth.
Most of somali leadership are corrupt specially in This crisis with no real accountability at all.west will always pick”The stupidest one so They can materialize own aim”.
I don't think Khaatomo terrorist will get PM even if they vote for Sheik Sharrif the current president, because they are less than 8% percent of Somaliland population and the poorest people in all Somali population. Number one reasons i don't think powerful clans like Haber gidir, Rahanwayn, Abgal, Majeertine who have huge influence in Somali politics will late one of the poorest people to become the second commander in chief in Somalia. Plus the powerful clans of Somaliland will not endorse the participation of its citizens on election of neighboring country of Somalia.
Mr rich boy don't be such an iid00r if you have the power why don't you stop Dhulbante elders are in Mugadishu and some of main influence of the new government and have the same amount of representatives as your powerful clan even though they are sub division clan hahaha unlike some people we know who burry themselves old Morgan's house without paying any rent we have allies with different somali tribes e.g. Hawiyee, Mareeh@n, Ogad@@n laylkase, M@jeerteen, wars@ngelii, Gad@buuri and so on. don't forget we are trying so hard to help our Abtiyal to overcome thier ever ending grieves Koonfur baa xasuuqday
also if we are less than 8% in north somalia as you said then how come we are main inhabitant of Sool, South Sanaag, South togdheer, (cayn) north Nugaal, parts of howd district of Ethiopia.. make no mistake these regions accounts for more than half north somalia, in terms of land scale. next time before you attack one of the most respected somali clan, the protectors of Greater Somalia whose without them you would be carrying a huge cross around your neck have soem self-respect.
waad iga qoslisay sxb dhulb@hante haduu gajoonayo dee somali dheregsanba ma jirto. the poorest people kulahaa,
@ Wadani-Darwiish
Good for defending your clan BUT "the protectors of Greater Somalia whose without them you would be carrying a huge cross around your neck have soem self-respect" I thought the mad mullah was humiliated and defeated in 1920 whilst we got our independence based on our demand in 1960. lool you guys are funny people, remember your reer abtiyaal dragged you to greater Somalia.
@IIoII yes Darwish was defeated after 20 years of struggle and that was when Darwiish movement was spread Burco to Beledhwayn and SYL followed thier footsteps. however, British had no choice but to leave when south somalis was about to get thier indpendene. check out this artical http://www.mongabay.com/reference/country_studies…
for the record no body dragged us into Greater Somalia that was what we wanted and been fighting for all this time but Garaad Jama on the other hand wanted not to rush things, which he was right, just like his late grandsone today. he also wanted reer Wayooyi to have 50/50 power share. don't be qaldans all the time at least for once you should listen to us. loool
for what is for worth I don't support Khaatumo project or Somaliland which is one clan dominated each. I don't support anything that dividing our people into further apart. every qabil have thier own theories but nobody will being going to forced into unity nor seperation. we all need each other is@@q can't secede without the help of other clans nor dhulb@@hante will restore the unity without the help of other clans. that's my opinion.
I can't believe I'm discussing Qabils on Ramadan, but you guys are tribilist to bones, plus I'm full dhulbah@ntee but we consider all Is@@q as reer Abtiyaal hehhehe
Cafis all
@wadani-darawiish.
Well said your comment good on you. you should give few lessons some of These folks.
i think somali should get an open minded candidate who can lead the country into fruittful peace such like FARMAJO,because as far as we know farmajo was leading the country for something like 3 months and we have seen his peace indicators,we therefore need a sharp minded president who can unite somalia regardless of his tribe.
