SOMALIA: Russia executed all Somali pirates – spokesman thumbnail

BOSASSO (Somalilandpress) — A pirate spokesman, who wished to remain anonymous, contacted Somalilandpress today said at least ten of his men were executed by the Russian navy after the troopers stormed MV Moscow University.

“The Russians commandos stormed the ship before sunrise, starting a firefight with our men, onboard they injured three of them and one was killed,” he said.

He dismissed the Russian navy statement that the men were released because of “the absence of a legal base to carry out prosecution procedures against pirates”.

“The Russians never released the young men instead they shot them point-blank range then loaded their lifeless bodies back on the boat,” he added.

The spokesman condemned the action of the Russian navy “our men never hurt their hostages, we simply want foreign ships to stop overfishing in our waters, if they are not happy to respect our-fishermen and their livelihood, we have no choice but to take hostage to compensate for the losses,” he cited.

“We condemn the action of the Russians, it’s driven by racism and hate for black people and Africa, it’s the face of the new Russia. In future, if we capture Russians they will meet the same fate as those they executed,” he added.

Meanwhile, many Somalis were angered by Somalia’s ambassador to Moscow, Mohamed Handule’s statement, who backed the Russian navy denying that the Russian destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov has not acted inappropriately. They requested an investigation and the immediate replacement of Mr. Handule.

“Not one Somali or the government of our country sees Russia has being guilty in this,” Mr. Handule told ITAR-TASS news agency.

On the 6th May, eleven Somali pirates hijacked the Liberian-flagged Russian oil tanker, MV Moscow University, carrying 86,000 tonnes of crude oil worth $US52 million in the Gulf of Aden. The anti-submarine destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov was notified and dispatched a helicopter which disrupted the pirates while commandos on speed boats stormed the tanker. The Russians have killed all eleven pirates and have destroyed their boats according to the pirate spokesman.

There are reports, Somali pirates still hold 23 foreign ships and 384 sailors in Somalia. Meanwhile, a conference co-sponsored by the United Nation and the Turkish government designed to address the piracy, stability and Somalia’s security will be hosted in Istanbul from 21st-23rd of May.

    The way to end piracy is to administer swift retribution. The Ruskies almost got it right. They should have manacled the dead bodies to the living pirates and thrown them all overboard for the sharks.     It's so funny to read this whining from a confessed pirate about unfairness on the high seas… And he didn't even bother explaining how the oil tanker passing 350 miles off the coast of Somalia interferes with the "fishing" and what hijacking such tanker has to do with "simply wanting foreign ships to stop overfishing in our waters,".
    And obviously the race card… It's so clear now! Of course, the poor defenseless pirate victims were targeted by racist Russian commandos just because they are black. The attack had nothing to do with those pirate hijacking the oil tanker earlier and threatening lives of the crew…

The pirates are criminal gangs preying upon international shipping and each country has the right to fight these criminals with every means at their disposal. I find no fault with the Russian response – the pirates brought it on themselves. To the Somali apologists for the pirates, I say "grow up, the pirates are not romantic Robin Hoods, but criminal gangs controlled from by fatcat money-men based in Puntland which use their ill-gotten gains to fund terrorism, anarchy and tribalism thoughout Somalia, Somaliland and Ethiopia. All the other international navies present in the Indian Ocean should take their lead from the Russians and the French and deal with these pirates equally severley.     Somalilander, you miss one simple point – Russians did not "kill unarmed hostages" they killed pirates who attempted to hijack a vessel. The fact that historically the pirates did not kill any hostages does not mean that the pirates should be treated well when captured. You sound like the pirates have the right to hijack the ships and we should all be grateful that they are not harming the hostages. Well, it's not the case. We will be defending ourselves against pirates and whoever embarks on a journey to try and hijack the ship should not be surprised to end up feeding fishes.

    I’d suppose that the boat was destroyed from the pirate mothership. This is just the way many special operations go. There were no need to kill anyone if they’re captured. If there was, why don’t anybody tell us?

    Fishermen… it’s lies from the very first word. Look, they’re going to “kill Russian seamen”. I’d like to see any b*tch who’d dare to start messing ON THE GROUND with the Russians like those from the SD Shaposhnikov.

    Actually Russian tanker was all in fire when commandoes did start their assault. Actually there were not commandoes, just a simple mariners (non-professional 18-20 guys who shall serve in Russian navy).

    Since when did pirates start having spokesmen?? They are a bunch of criminals who deserve to be executed. And the idea of protecting 'fishing grounds' 1500 nautical miles off the Somalia coast and claiming the 'high seas' as their fishing area sounds so ridiculous. Where do these idiots come from and have they not heard of the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)?

    If they threaten the Russian seamen, the pirates are playing with fire. All Russia has to do is park a couple of guided missle destroyers off the Somalia coast and blast the pirate stronghold cities of EYl, Haraderre and Bossaso. And the world, I a sure will look the other way!!

    It is high time the pirates realised that when you play with fire, you can get burnt!

    1.) 2 coast guard guardsmen killed
    Somali pirates with automatic weapons captured the ship, carrying 6 Kenyans and 6 Sri Lankans. On February 27,2007 members of the Somali coast guard attempted to take back the ship but failed, and 2 coast guardsmen were killed.

    2.) 1 hostage killed
    The Taiwanese fishing vessel was hijacked on May 28, 2007. The surviving crew of 10 Chinese, two Taiwanese and two Filipino crew members was released on November 5 after spending more than six months in captivity. One Chinese crew member was killed by the pirates on May 28 because the ship’s owners failed to meet their ransom demands.

    3.) 1 crewman killed
    The MV Bunga Melati Dua, a Malaysian palm oil tanker owned by MISC Berhad, and its crew of 29 Malaysians and ten Filipinos was hijacked by pirates in two speedboats. One Filipino crew member was killed during the boarding.

    4.) 1 hostage killed
    The French yacht was captured by pirates on 4 April 2009, taking hostage a couple, their 3-year-old child, and two friends of the family who joined them in Aden. They were supposed to join Mayotte, and left Vannes on 26 July. The French forces stormed the yacht on 10 April while the pirates refused French offers to free the hostages. One hostage, Florent Lemaçon, 28, was killed, and the four other freed, including the child. Two pirates were killed and three others captured.

    5.) 1 captain killed
    Pirates attacked the vessel near Mogadishu harbor. During the hijacking attempt, the Syrian captain was killed and several crewmen wounded. Somali police and African Union peacekeepers rescued the ship.
