SOMALIA: Russia executed all Somali pirates – spokesman

BOSASSO — A pirate spokesman, who wished to remain anonymous, contacted Somalilandpress today said at least ten of his men were executed by the Russian navy after the troopers stormed MV Moscow University.
“The Russians commandos stormed the ship before sunrise, starting a firefight with our men, onboard they injured three of them and one was killed,” he said.
He dismissed the Russian navy statement that the men were released because of “the absence of a legal base to carry out prosecution procedures against pirates”.
“The Russians never released the young men instead they shot them point-blank range then loaded their lifeless bodies back on the boat,” he added.
The spokesman condemned the action of the Russian navy “our men never hurt their hostages, we simply want foreign ships to stop overfishing in our waters, if they are not happy to respect our-fishermen and their livelihood, we have no choice but to take hostage to compensate for the losses,” he cited.
“We condemn the action of the Russians, it’s driven by racism and hate for black people and Africa, it’s the face of the new Russia. In future, if we capture Russians they will meet the same fate as those they executed,” he added.
Meanwhile, many Somalis were angered by Somalia’s ambassador to Moscow, Mohamed Handule’s statement, who backed the Russian navy denying that the Russian destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov has not acted inappropriately. They requested an investigation and the immediate replacement of Mr. Handule.
“Not one Somali or the government of our country sees Russia has being guilty in this,” Mr. Handule told ITAR-TASS news agency.
On the 6th May, eleven Somali pirates hijacked the Liberian-flagged Russian oil tanker, MV Moscow University, carrying 86,000 tonnes of crude oil worth $US52 million in the Gulf of Aden. The anti-submarine destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov was notified and dispatched a helicopter which disrupted the pirates while commandos on speed boats stormed the tanker. The Russians have killed all eleven pirates and have destroyed their boats according to the pirate spokesman.
There are reports, Somali pirates still hold 23 foreign ships and 384 sailors in Somalia. Meanwhile, a conference co-sponsored by the United Nation and the Turkish government designed to address the piracy, stability and Somalia’s security will be hosted in Istanbul from 21st-23rd of May.

Somalia is the worst country in Africa and that is saying a lot! It's actually the worst place on earth. There are good Somalians but there culture is sick. They will never succeed until they graduate to the 21st century and abandon the clan system.
I wish more countries would get a back bone like the Russians did and treat piracy in the same manner instead of worrying about what the rest of the world will think, good on them.
Why don't the affected countries(US, Asian and other Western countries) form a joint force and do some cleansing activities in the Indian Ocean and around the Somalian coast. Basically what I mean is destroy their mother vessels/boats and basic infrastructure. It's also necessary to negate their intelligence activities and information sources. They should also look forward to do this cleansing periodically to ensure fearless passage of the ships through that region. I do agree that not all Somalians are pirates and It may sound very inhuman, but certain communities/groups of that country are acting as mad 'animals' which is not only affecting their country but other communities as well. It's high time we pinpoint these elements as accurately as possible and wipe them out periodically. A co-ordinated effort in this regard will help in minimizing the losses suffered by the concerned nations.

I think Russians did what every other nation should do. There are no excuses for 21 century pirates. You try to board one of the ships just remember that you might not come back home to your Allah. Why don't you do farming, build the roads, educate yourself. Instead you count on Chinese to help you rebuild the country that you can not take care it yourself. I do not think it likely that merchant marine and cruise line ships in these waters are really fishing, so I find the statement of the pirate that they simply attack to preserve the livelihood of Somali fisherman to be questionable. Furthermore, if merchant marine and cruise ships are damaging the livelihood of Somali fisherman, the should be addressed by the government by international law, treaty, law suits and the action of the Somali navy, not by common pirates. Note that this news outlet publishes with the word 'pirate', not freedom fighter or protector of the environment. The word 'pirate' has always indicated a lawless person who preys on lawful ships. If Russia's actions can be proved, then the government should bring a grievance against the Russian government as provided for by international law.

I am a Kenyan and I applaud the Russian NAvy for a job well done. Somali Pirates and Al Shabaab are vermin that need to be exterminated. They have ruined Kenya's economy and tourism. I am also proud of our military for wasting 75 Al-Shabaab militants yesterday. Our troops will cleanse the Somali coast town by town of pirates and islamist scum, while the west just watches and thinks the problem will solve itself. Well done Russia.

Lot of mad skinnies in this thread. While I agree with the assessment that the Russian sailors are quite unprofessional and probably a bit ill-disciplined, they got the job done, eliminated some 'fishermen' (interesting use of AKs to catch fish), and freed their ship. More of the same from everyone involved please, that number of captive ships would drop to 0 pretty lively.
It's nothing to do with hatred for Africans either, the Russians don't care what opposes them, they'll simply level the obstacle, just like the war in Chechnya.
