Mogadishu – Somalia’s al Shabaab rebels ambushed an armoured convoy carrying the country’s president during a rare overland trip outside the capital on Tuesday, a Reuters witness said.

President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed was unharmed in the attack which occurred on the outskirts of Elasha town, located between Mogadishu and the former rebel stronghold of Afgoye, about 30 km (18 miles) northwest of the city.

“The fighting split the convoy. Vehicles scattered in different directions,” a Reuters photographer travelling with the convoy said. Bullets struck several African Union (AU) peacekeeper vehicles but none were damaged.

The firefight lasted about 30 minutes and forced the AU to fire shells to subdue the attack, he said, adding that the armoured vehicle carrying Ahmed sped off as fighting broke out.

A spokesman for the AMISOM peacekeepers confirmed the ambush. “We disrupted it as soon as they fired small guns from afar,” Lieutenant Colonel Paddy Ankunda told Reuters.

African Union and Somali government troops captured Afgoye on Friday and then secured an aid corridor linking the town to Mogadishu over the weekend, wresting control of a strip of land believed to hold around 400 000 people displaced by conflict.

Al Shabaab, which merged with al Qaeda earlier this year, said they had pulled out of the Afgoye corridor in a tactical retreat, but threatened on Monday to strike back.

“If the government controls the Afgoye corridor, then President Sharif should be able to pass there peacefully,” Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab’s spokesman for military operations, told Reuters.

The U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR, said on Tuesday 14 000 people had been displaced by the recent military activity in the Afgoye corridor. – Reuters

Yaa daafac albala! This is what delusional people were comparing Somaliland's state of peace and tranquility with. Isn't that a complete denial on the reality on the ground in Somalia? What kind of peace and progress were people talking about when its President cannot step out of villa Mogadisho and if dares to step out. This is what happens.

If Somalia is doing well and securing peace then I say good for them and well done Somalia, I urge all Somalilanders to do the same as they are our brothers and sisters. Wishing bad on them or hoping they stay in a perpetual state of war is truly wrong and Un Islamic.

Again this works both ways people from Somalia should leave Somaliland out of its plans and not aim to sow seeds of conflict within Somaliland. Yet if Somalia is doing well and recovering it should not mean that you should turn your attention to seeing to it that Somaliland fails and falters or wishing evil on Somaliland

I highly urge both peoples of both countries to show respect and restraint against each other.

Silanyo's cousins (Al shabab funded by Dahabshiil) almost assassinated the President. Bishin Gudud Sharif is not the best president but he is better than blood suckers like Silanyo, Morgan, Afweyne, Aideed and Abdillahi Yusuf.

Besides unlike Council leader Silaanyo, Sheikh Sharif bishin Gudud does not care about tribalism. Silaanyo is the biggest tribalist alive in Somalia today after the death of Abdillahi.

Right now he turned the administration Dahir Riyale left behind into HJ and Dahabshiil project and I predict very soon someone will assassinate him and send his corpse to Garadag.

He cant step out side the house of Morgan unlike Riyale who went as far as Las Annod.

Silanyo recently sneaked into Borama and the locals kicked him out after minutes of arriving.

North Somalia is awakening and is sick and tired of tribalism, today, they will prove again that they will never tolerate tribalism and injustice.

Silaanyo used to use al shabab to destabilize the south so he can tell the world "south terrorism me democracy recognize me". It seems that is now over and al shabab like Silanyo council is on its last leg.

North Somalia is getting together to oust the last terrorist in Somalia. Stay tuned and follow as events unfold in the north and the south is liberated from Silanyo and Dahabshiil sponsored al shabab.
