MOGADISHU — The Somali Olympic Committee (SOC) and selectors have announced the two athletes that will compete for Somalia at the London Olympics on Saturday.

According to the Committee countries that do not qualify for any events are eligible to present two athletes in the games under the Olympic Games rules.

The selection panel hosted a fierce competition between two girls in one heat and two boys in another. The selectors like most Somali athletes were convinced the two runners – Samsam Mohamed Farah and Mohamed Hassan Mohamed will give their all for Somalia and in the road to London.

The Committee said their selection was ratified by the Somali Olympic Committee last week was “unanimous”. Their coach, Ahmed Ali Abukar, said the selection was not only based on performance, the race, but also experience. He said they were the right athletes to carry the nation’s flag.

“These athletes through sheer grit, courage, mental toughness and hard work have earned the right to wave our Nation’s flag,” he said according to media in Mogadishu.

The coach will be joined by the former Somali coach of the national basketball team Mr. Omar Abdulqadir Barajab.

Somali athletes often risked their own lives to train under harsh al Shabaab rule and sending this time to London will be a symbolic victory of the al Qaeda group. It will as well motivate the battered nation and its long-suffering population.

Somali athletes still lack the resources needed to compete with their competitors. Diet, equipment and facilities remain the biggest problems even after al Shabaab were ousted last year. They eat bread, camel meat, fruit and eggs for breakfast, while lunch usually consists of spaghetti or rice with meat and camel milk. Due to lack of energy drinks, most of them use just basic mango juice.

They will face fierce competition from neighbouring heavyweights Kenya and Ethiopia as well as other leading countries in the marathon category.

Thanks to this wildcard place, Mr. Mohamed, 19, hopes to run in the 1,500m and 5,000m, who is described as a young ambitious and driven athlete.

He hopes to dedicate this rare opportunity to the former SOC chairman, Aden Yabarow Wiish, who was killed in April when a bomb exploded in the national theatre.

Somaliiiiii wa kumaaaaaaa? ….Somali….Somali baan ahay….we are partying from Ras Kabon to Zeilac….Somalis have never being this united since 1960.

Remember its not how many you send nor is it about how many metals you win. Our country has abundance of deposits of all kinds of metals and resources.

These two are reflection of our selves, our struggle, our disunity and our search for that five-point Somali star thats embeded in every Somali heart.

We just need to learn to trust our hearts and for a while defeat our big egos.

“Give up all bad qualities in you, banish the ego and develop the spirit of surrender. You will then experience Bliss.”

Somali people don't hate each others. Our egos hate each others and often those egos have tribal tags that we don't even realize we are carrying. Ego is the enemy, my Somali people declare war on your ego that tells you: "If your X tribe your better than Y"

“Ego: The fallacy whereby a goose thinks he's a swan”

Where we Somalis think our tribes are sacred divines and scholars of the universe.

No Somali hates Somali. Somali wa kuma? Its not ego, I will tell you that.

Congratulations Somali Olympic Committee and you have been through tough times but they coming to an end, I can assure you that. These two kids have made us proud.

  3. kaboon says:

oh boy here we go again as the haw!ye embarrass us and the Somali name. let me just change my name .

    • ciise says:

mind you i was traveling between france and belgium in 2008 when the Somali girl came after 5 mins later then everyone in the 400 meters race and the french commentators where laughing

    • dardar says:

just to clarify non of those two hail from haywie clan. girl is degil and mirife and the boy is d4R0D

  4. khaatumo citizen says:

go go go make us all proud. I wanna see that blue and white flying high:) :)

I wonder why Mo Farah airnt running for Somalia he's a good runner so what if he's from the north so is Abdi Bille.

    • kaboon says:

everything good is from the north.

      • khaatumo citizen says:

        looool is that right

      • alihassan says:

MO farah was born in mogadishu and abdi bile is a Somaliweyn dreamer like all Darod's.

No hate but Somalia is born once again.

        • khaatumo citizen says:

Alihassan u sick if he doesn't run for somalia then should he run for Ethiopia. dont think so. or England like Mo farah.. u somali be proud of it doesnt matter u from south, central or north.
i don't believe in somaliwayn. there is only somalia, kenya, Ethiopia and djubouti.

  5. Somaliaqueen says:

Doesn't matter if he wins ir lose the point is the flag has to fly high in the sky. Praise to the LORDSomalia has risen again. Alhamdulillah

  6. Jabuutawi says:

At least the Somali girl can beat those obese, frog-eating French commentators in a race. The sister is in better shape than most Somali guys and their soft bellies.

Unless you have run the 400 meters, you don't know the physical agony and exhuastion one goes through. Much respect to the sister.

Those who hate other clans solely for being from another clan – get a life. If you were born in the 1990s and later, on what grounds do you have in becoming clannish? Stop the madness and foolishness.

  7. Mohamd says:

Foreigners who come here to observe Somaliland haters will find plenty of entertainment from these comments. The reason why the majority of Somalia is beyond redemption is because the majority choose to beleive in Haram and lies.

Somalia people find nothing better than choosing the wrong people to lead them, and what better to choose than men/women who will come running past the finishing line way later than the slowest person from Eskimosland.

I hope you all continue to dwell in misery and pay for the crimes you have caused to my people which you still celebrate every time the UN books hotels for Zoomaliya.

    • Somaliland4ever says:

We don't wish our southern brothers any evil

  8. Zeinab says:

Mo Farrah is not Somali he is Somaliland he flag and nationality is different then Somali

    • ali dheere says:

he is using british flag not regional flag s/land.

  9. s.land says:

i wish them to win, while they don’t have full functioning government and working ministry of sports.but we should trust our allah he can do every thing
    see you somalia

  10. Carl T Prempeh-Dyer says:

We could have had more than JUST 2. The London and UK Somali Community Leaders along with UK-SOC failed the Somalian people and 'Sports Somali'. Its a shame to know that: selection planing, meetings; coaches interview; training camp, kits and proformer funding was all arrange as far back as 2009. Reminders were given as to the rquirements for certain dicipline deadlines. A london Venue was on-cards to be The mission house where Somali-business could have show case there intent to unite and display thier fine Culture and tradition theme "Somali The Nation" They knew all-about what had to be done. They just didnt know how to deliver. Once again Somali leaders fail to discern the outcomes. Someone must beheld accountable. Simple Someone failed The Somali people. This LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS was in deed GODS gift. It would have been a spring board for betterness and indeed an Up lift for Somalis.
