Somalia's Presidential candidate Dr Said Essa Mohamud

Press Release

For Immediate Release – Sunday, June 7, 2012

MOGADISHU — Today the People Party of Somalia’s Presidential candidate, Said Issa Mohamud, the first and only candidate to campaign outside of Mogadishu, travels to central Somalia to campaign. This is the second time that Mohamud has left the relative safety and security of Mogadishu to travel to meet Somalis in the more dangerous regions of the country.

“It is a crime that most politicians running for President hide in Mogadishu if they are in Somalia at all,” said Mohamud before departing. “Most of my opponents prefer to stay in Nairobi. This does an injustice to the citizens of Somalia. How can we expect Somalis to engage in the political process if we don’t engage them? I’m leading an effort to communicate with Somalis and inform them about why the policies of the People Party are best for them and our country.”

Mohamud is leading a six member delegation which today travels about one hour by plane to Guriel in central Somalia. Once on the ground, delegation from the People Party will be traveling in a convoy of four cars. Their campaign stops will include Dhuusamareeb, Abudwak, Herale, Guriel, Matabaan, Gerijir, Mirig, Gadoon, Godqod, Eldhere, Balanbal and Hananbure. In Dhuusamareeb, Muhamud will open a campaign office for the People Party of Somalia, only the second campaign office of any party to open outside of Mogadishu. Mohamud opened the first one a few weeks ago in Afgoya.

At each campaign stop, the People Party delegation plans on meeting clan elders, clerics, clan chiefs and local administrators as well as with the ordinary Somalis whose lives the party hopes to improve. “It is very important that Somalis hear our message of peace and prosperity,” Mohamud said. “People respond when we explain our party’s policies and they understand that a better life is possible. If all Somalis unify we can cast aside a life of poverty and violence, move beyond a life of corruption and fear and embrace a future of peace and prosperity. This is the hope that the People Party is working to bring to all Somalis, no matter where they live and who they are.”
