Somali-American is new prime minister in Somalia

October 14, 2010   ·   22 Comments

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s president named a new prime minister on Thursday, bringing into the government a Somali-American who has taught at a community college in New York state.

Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed replaces Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, who had a long-running feud with the president and resigned last month.

A statement from the Somali government said that Mohamed is a former Somali diplomat. He worked in the Somali Embassy in Washington from 1985 to 1988, according to the government’s website.

Mohamed has taught conflict resolution and leadership skills at Erie Community College, a member of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, according to his resume. He has a master’s degree in political science from SUNY-Buffalo, it said.

Mohamed will be asked to name a Cabinet within one month.

Mark Bowden, a top U.N. official with oversight of Somalia, said Mohamed’s Cabinet is expected to be smaller than the bloated group of politicians that Sharmarke had control over. Among officials in Sharmarke’s Cabinet was a minister of tourism in a violence-plagued country that sees only a handful of tourists each year.

Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government controls only a few blocks of Mogadishu and is generally seen as corrupt, weak and ineffective. The government has accomplished little since its inception in 2004. Somalia hasn’t had a fully functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew the president.

The U.S. last month announced a new, dual track approach to Somalia that will see continued American support of the transitional government but also new, direct support of other groups and regions in Somalia. The new approach includes increased support to the semiautonomous Somali regions of Somaliland and Puntland

The big time Darod right wing Puntland dominated is now out of the
big time political scene with replacement of the Mareexan clique
politics comeback….this new scenario darod's other face value remains
to be seen how it will play itself out.
Attn S/l press. Forgoodness sake stop calling somaliland semiautonomous
region..it deserves more than semiautonomous..why deny it's proper
    designation. Shame on you guys.
    Cheers.

  2. Abdisamad says:

Mohamed Abdullahi is not a Somali-American, he's a Somali living in America.

    • mohamed says:

Say again. I don't understand your meaning.
      Cheers.

    • marakan says:

he is naturalized so he is american which makes him "Somali-America."

  3. nasir says:

from somali-canadian to somali-american!! a part from the meaning this has to Somalis there is another political shift from south-east to south-south clan power sharing that Italian-Somaliland first experiencing.

Many people including me believe that this new strategy may help bringing peace at stability in southern Somalia.

  4. Musa says:

The new Somali Prime Minister is a well-talented scholar whose dignity is worthy of a real Prime Minister, but not to spoil his name with this current Somali political situation which is very difficult to solve. I think, he is better off to stay away from this already burning fire, where it is hard to resolve. I feel pity for him really because people are now religiously fighting each other, which was once their last resort to resolve their differences.

      We will see his talents!

"The new Somali Prime Minister is a well-talented scholar whose dignity is worthy of a real Prime Minister"

de javu moment I believe I heard the same about the last Somali PM :p

  5. HMObsiye says:

I hope this new guy understand that Somaliland is not part of his equation and kick out any Somalilanders in previous Sharmarke administration. As far as the people of Somaliland is concerned, they have made their decision to be an Independent state that shares borders with its neighbours like Somalia , Ethiopia and Djibouti. If the new guy make mistakes like his predecessor his administration will fail just like the previous ones before him,

  6. hassan says:

Let us consider the new information that the newly named prime-minister was or member of the UIC group (union islamic courts).

    source of acquisition:- Puntland

  7. Nas says:

    This is great news!!!

This will not only benefit south/central Somalia but this will in-directly benefit S/Land security.

Puntland years of hijacking and threats towards almost equal, weak and corrupt TFG is OVER.

Now ball is in the court of the Marehan clan and its their turn to rise up and fight against the al-shabaab. Remember, bros/sis the Marehan clan just allowed the al-shabaab to rule Kismayo due to their bittiness that no member of their sub-clan was given any senior ministerial roles i.e. Prime Minister.

The al-shabaab is already divided by clan lines and as recent news suggest… so-called leader "Sheikh Moktar Zubeyr….Ahmad Abdi Godane" and his foreign cronies are already facing hostility from southern clans…..Abu Mansoor has ordered his "al shabaab" fighters (which all consist of his clan) to move out of Mogadishu and Beledweyne.

It will be only a matter of time when the Marehan clan will raise up in Kismayo… and this could signal the end of this terror group!!!

  8. ali says:

Make no mistake, a dog is always a dog. if the new PM is from Marehan clan there is little hope for a real peace in somalia. They've already shown us there way of running a country. Marehan is responsible of the destruction of Somalia.

    • Nas says:

I rather see al-shabaab to kept occupied trying to control Jubba regions and Kismayo, then instead of planning attacks in S/Land and detabilising our nation!

  9. Aw-Gass says:

To extent did the new Somali Prime Minister involve in the genocide of Somaliland people? Remember he was working for Said Barre government as an official in the Somali Emabssy in Washington D.C. from 1988 to the fall of the dictator. We also know now that he was a close relative of Said Barre. Please correct me if I am mistaken!
    Aw_Gass

    • mohamed says:

NO Sir you aint mistaken MR. AW Gass…The new PM must be checked
for incremental war crimes during the period he was working for Siad Barre
as an official in the Somali Embassy in Washington D.C. from 1988
to 1991. Specially when he's a close relative to General Siad Barre!.
      Cheers.

  10. Gobaad says:

Another Darood and a Mareeraan who killed and buried the idea of the Dream of a Great Somali. But at least, he is a minority within South Somalia. And entitled to share the power with Hawiye clans who the majority in the South. What he does and how he behaves is yet to be seen.

    • mohamed says:

Gobaad dear you said it all.
      Cheers.

  11. mohamed says:

With this new policy shift of Marehan clan pm, what will become of the
SL dissidents in Somalia? and how the majority hawiye will treat
the power sharing of the isaak-dir clans AKA SSNM who are
indigenous southerns with original roots from SL!!!.
    Cheers.

  12. hassan says:

believe me, this new pm will accomplish zero. even their president was not elected yet they swear that he was by the entire somali people including SL. next thing you will hear is that he manages SL. the whole palace is build on haram that is why it never works.

  13. MOH says:

Who are the people that voted this clan to be the PM of somali? they must be out of there mind. dont we had enough conflict from this clan? why are we still getting involved with Darood in our governmen systerm. Al-shabab is better then this clan to be somalis PM…

  14. awaare says:

mareeraan are no good fot somalia

  15. awaare says:

mareeraan city don ever have water, there people ever were in somali
