President of Djibouti is accused of murder

Paris, 23 March 2010 (Somalilandpress) – A Djibouti businessman and opposition figure filed a civil lawsuit in Paris against President Ismael Omar Guelleh for serious crimes that include murder and extortion, he and his lawyer said Tuesday to the French news Agnecy AFP.

Abdourahman Boreh, who has headed a large infrastructure compnay and other public bussinesses in Djibouti, accused the president and his wife Khadra Haid of murder, kidnapping, torture and extortion.

According to Boreh’s lawyer, Olivier Morice, Boreh “has been the target of threats and intimidation by Djibouti authorities, which forced him to flee Djibouti in autumn 2008.”

In press conference in Paris, Mr. Abdurahman Boreh said he was victim of multiple extortion attempts and was forced to suspend his business in the country. At first the attacks targeted his assets and businesses but it escalted to to target his business associates and family members, two of whom died in suspicous circumstances, Morice said.

Mr. Boreh’s nephew has been found hanged at his home in February 2009. Also his cousin died after being detained and tortured in prison Gabode and another cousin is incarcerated for a year, Morice added.

Mr. Boreh, who has dual citizenship of France and Djibouti, detailed number of events that forced him out of the Djibouti. He accuses the Djiboutian government of arbitrarily detaining his staff including the General Manager of one of his companies, Soprim Construction, who has a Canadian citizenship, and its chief accountant who is from India.

“I’ve lost more than 30 million dollars (22 million euros) and I no longer have any commercial activities in Djibouti. I had to close down everything,” Boreh told AFP.

The aim from extortion and political pressure is to prevent Mr. Boreh from running in the upcoming presidential election next year, according to Olivier Morice.

Mr. Boreh lawyer, Olivier Morice, also defended the interests of Elizabeth Borrel, widow of French judge Bernard Borrel, whose corpse was found half-burned in a ravine in Djibouti in 1995.

For years, Judge Borrel’s affair strained relations between Paris and its former colony, where France has its largest military base abroad with nearly 3,000 men.

A Djiboutian court declared the incident as a suicide. However, Judge Borrel’s wife Elisabeth Boreel, herself a magistrate, believes her husband was assassinated by Djibouti authorities and accused the French government of covering-up the truth to protect its strategic interests in Djibouti.

In other development, Mr. Boreh in interview with VOA, warned from changing the constitution to extend presidential terms. Parlimenat in Djibouti is expected to make a decision on whatether the current two terms presidental limit should be extended to three terms. Recently, President Guelleh was quoted as saying the people of Djibouti are demanding a change to the constitution which will extend presidential term limits.

I dont think there is much the French can do perhaps this is their way of getting back at Gelleh for the French Judge that was murdered in Djibouti.

Im not a fan of Omar Gelleh or Djibouti for that matter, they can all go wherever they want.

  4. Mo ahmed says:

These is another African dictator who cares less for the people they supposedly leading.
As long they serve their masters in these cases the European Union and Americans, he can get away with murder.

  6. Elmi says:

    Apparently this is Rayaale's mentor!

  8. ppppppp says:

  9. Cabdi Shakoor says:

President Guelle must go after his term, his a dangerous man, and the majority of the Djibouti population are unhappy with him and he can't controle his wife.

Also we don't want, Bad exemple and idea for our President (Rayaale), to think same way (to stay in Power for all his life).

As M. Elmi said "Guelle is Rayaale's mentor"

  10. Abdul says:

He is a dictator who is only interested in ruling Dijbouti with an iron fist and a gun

  11. libaan says:

you people love to disrespect other somalis, but when it come to the habasha they are this and they are that, why dont you all just claim to be ethiopian and abandon somali race? you people will never be like Ismail Omar Gelle LONG LIVE OUR PRESIDENT

    • Somali says:

At least we're not owned by Europeans

    • AHMAD FARAH says:

Traditionally, at the beginning dictators are admired by their people and at the end they destroy every thing ( ten years of construction and ten of demolishing).
Gelleh is a half educated African dictator, so what you expect !!!! DESTRUCTION OF MAN AND MATERIAL.

  12. Kunciil says:

It's sad to see the hypocrisy of Borreh. He was a close friend of the president and guess what, it's now that he says that Guelleh is a dictator. Stop bullshiting us.
I doubt a french court can do anything about Djiboutian nationals and they do not seem to let go the Borrel case, forgetting the thousands of Djiboutians they have killed under their colonial occupation.

Anyway, as a Djiboutian citizen I do not believe in Borreh's sincerity as we all know in Djibouti what kind of businessman he was, but in the same time I am opposed to the government attempt to amend our constitution to allow the president a third term, it's not good for our democracy.

    God help us,
    God bless Djibouti,

  13. balbala says:

  14. Bilaal says:

I dont like his totalaterian style. But gues what ppl Djabouti love him to death. And Im serious.. May be they deserve the poverty and the all problems they have. The other hand, i wonder what his wife has done wrong.? Political involvement of first lady is no vice.. Every president's wife has a hand in politics in every country. But no way, Khadra is not out of control as some Isse radical suggest . Former first lady, Asha Boqore was all over Djabouti poltical life but no body was cursing her for that. Why Khadra, its question that needs to be answered.

  15. Prop DJIBOUTIEN says:
