Hargeisa, Somaliland – IRI’s most recent Somaliland poll (PDF)found that 56 percent of respondents believe that poverty and unemployment are the most important issues facing Somaliland.  The poll, conducted June 16-24, 2012, is a comprehensive analysis of attitudes regarding the current Somaliland economic, social and political landscape.

Optimism among Somalilanders is strong, with 86 percent of respondents stating they think things in Somaliland are headed in the right direction.  The two most favorably viewed entities in Somaliland are religious leaders at 96 percent and the president at 84 percent.

In addition, 80 percent of Somalilanders think that Somaliland is either a full democracy, or a democracy with only minor problems.

IRI has been conducting polls in Somaliland since 2011.  The data collected in this poll is intended both to gauge public opinion and to assist IRI’s parliamentary and political party partners with pursuing policies based on issues most important to the Somaliland people.

The randomly selected sample of 1,266 men and women of voting age was collected nationwide.  Analysis, supervision and execution of the poll was performed by Opinion Research Business (ORB) and was fielded by local polling firm Data and Research Solutions under the supervision of ORB and IRI.  The poll had a response rate of 64 percent and the margin of error for the national sample does not exceed plus or minus 2.75 percent.

  1. Yaashimo Rurrani says:

Eighty six percent of English speaking respondents are those who can afford to buy food but the rest of the population can’t afford to buy food. Your article is sounding like Indians “Indian has the worst gab." Some are washing their hands on their leftover food and some are starving and scavengers. They fight with dogs to eat thrown out food in the garbage cane.

  2. Buuxiye says:

Rur Rani is a Srilankan name usually used by the Lowest CAST. You have never been to Somaliland and hence lack the objectivity required to comment in a constructive manner no wonder you sound like a Envious middle aged woman abandoned for a 19year old.

:) Somaliland going from strength to strength and it will never stop for the haters not today not tomorrow not the NEXT century.

Majority in Somalilanders have confidence in their REPUBLIC and it's GOVERNMENT. This is the ingredients required as a foundation for development and progress. This should be sustained as it will be the driving force that boosts investment from Somalilanders and Non-Somalilanders alike.

In comparison an investor in Bossasso or Moqadishu lacks the fundamental confidence in the security, economy, government and the STATE as a whole. Many people will refrain from investment in these graveyard towns.

    Secondary comparison.

    - Salary of a Coca Cola Manager $2000/Month in Somaliland Republic.

    - Salary of a Power station manager $200/Month in Ethiopia.

Obviously the population difference is on a ration 1-25. The success of Somaliland republic directly and indirectly BOOSTS the Economies of it's neighbors with Djbouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia all gaining from the success of Somaliland. Somaliland-Dollars are providing employment and a livelihood for Millions of people in the Horn of Africa.

    - Almost 1000 Kenyan teachers work in Somaliland.
    - Ethiopia's 90million are dependent on the Berbera port.
    - Djbouti's business community are 60% composed of Somalilanders.
    - Ranhanweyn farmers from Somalia find unrestricted markets in Somaliland with no taxation.
    - 60% of Middle east red-meat imports come from somaliland ($500million business)

The International Community MUST begin to understand the Vital ROLE that somaliland plays in the HORN of AFRICA and the FUTURE paradigm available in Somaliland Republic to avert centuries of POVERTY and CONFLICT.

Somaliland is a critical positive CAUSAL-state that is influencing the economic environment of the Horn. Investment and development of Somaliland will directly and indirectly influence POVERTY reduction in the HORN of Africa. DOMINO EFFECT.

SOMALILAND REPUBLIC is where the solution can be nurtured to alleviate POVERTY, WAR, DISEASE, MIGRATION, PIRACY and POOR GOVERNANCE in the AFRICAN continent.

  3. Kayse says:

Somaliland is the poorest region in almost all the regions in Somalia, even the troubled Mogadishu has between quality of education, food security, transportation and logistics, infrastructure and potential for future massive foreign investment. Tourism alone along the Mogadishu beaches and waterfronts will make Mogadishu rival regional markets such as Nairobi or Addis Ababa.

This poll is only based on mere 1.200 people from Hargeisa and it does not reflect the true picture. Poverty and unemployment alone will make those Somalis in the Somaliland region migrate south to find job and better education opportunities and they will not waste another 20 years of their lives sitting among the trash and waiting for Dahabshiil handouts.

The separatists will rather ignore the poll and talk about one man from Djibouti who runs a minor Coke plant outside of Hargeisa. Coke does not employ instead it makes the poor poorer and the qat addict more addict. It dries up all the little water reservoirs and health hazards such as Diabetes, tooth decay will even become epidemic.

Ethiopia is $35billion economy and its funny how one separatists compares their 90 million nation to a small region that pearly generates $50m in a whole year.

The richest man in the world is an Indian but can you compare slum dog millionaire with EU or US? This one is even worse, comparing one Djibouti coke operator to an Ethiopian power generator who will soon connect the whole Horn and East of Africa to the Ethiopian grid while they build billions of dollars worth dams.

I don't get how those separatists think. Stay on the Cola and keep chewing. Somalis in the north will not listen to your ignorant Gibberish.

  4. mohamed cheers says:

While Somalia Sovereignty failed leaderships since 1991 to current are endeavouring
to come out of their chaotic warmongering mishap shambles, de jure Somaliland is
all set for attracting progressive IC Industrialized Govts and big investment Private Companies
for investment projects etc. Under the pragmatic wise leadership of the Somaliland Govt
led by Ato Silaanyo, is all promises to become a new Hub development in the Horn of Africa.
    Cheers.

    • Buuxiye says:

      Totally agree

Our Geo-Positioning in the horn of Africa gives us a strategic advantage that will have a direct effect on eliminating poverty and Disease from the North-East of Africa. The Somaliland population comprising above 70% under 22 and highly educated when given the opportunity to unleash their entrepreneur spirit will transform the Aid dependent region into the economic Power Hub of the African Continent.

      Insha'allah

  5. Gaade says:

It's good to know people's views and feelings.

    • @undefined says:

If there is no law that will facilitate and protects the international business investments in Somaliland, nothing will be achieved. Before the government of Somaliland assembles the international Oil companies to explore any oil deposits in the country of (Somaliland) they should put laws together that protects the environment of the country and the investment that those steak takers will bring. The Government of Somaliland should also consider to put important institutions in place, such as banks, postal Services, telecommunications and infrastructure like roads etc. Poverty, lack of employment is the whole mark of Somaliland for last 52 years and now the expectation of the people is so high but unfortunately that expectation was dashed so many times, I urge the people of Somaliland to demand change from the Government for better future.

    • Ahmed eid says:
